The favorite left wing attack oo eoo-
servatlves Is to call them faScists or
nazis, more to be feared than the com-
munists. Mr. Bergland bllthely goes
aloog with this tactic by referring to
"the cammunlsts on the fir left and
the fascists on the far right." In his
posltloo as an attorney and as a
Libertarian Party candidate, he should
exercise better judgment than that.
How to judge between rtght and left,
between cooservatlve and liberal? The
key Is their concept of the role of
government, and thus their understand-
Ing of the tyranny of big government.
At the extreme left Is total govern-
ment control, which can be equated
with ccmmunist dictatorship. Nazism,
fascism and socialism are all of the
left, with varying degrees of govern-
ment control. Somewhere to the rtght
of center Is the conservative with his
dedication to limited government, based
on a written contract, the Constitution.
At the far right is Mr. Bergland, with
his Libertarians, who want no govern-
ment at all. Perhaps he will have the
good gr-ace to amend his statement
and say It m ore correctly: "the com·
munists on the far left and the anarchists
on the far right." As for myself a.td
my con.•ervative friends, we stand-firmly
for our constitutional republic as es-
tablished so wisely by our founding
fathers.
Much m ore alarming than the con-
fusion, inte;,ded or accidental, concern-
ing the right and the left Is the defense
of abortion. Here is the ultimate tyranny
of the left --playing the role of God
to determine who has the right to· live
and who is to be denied that right.
The cold-bl ooded sentence of death for
the unborn is sanctioned by the heart-
less doctrine: "My body Is my property;
I can do with it as I wish." Scmetlmes
a footnote is added: "if I don't harm
anyone else.'' Apparently this dis-
claimer does not apply to the unborn
child, although the child Is suffering
the ultimate harm, death Itself.
From the moment of conception there
exists a living soul, and It is an act
of premeditated killing to put an end
to that life from that moment on. The
mother cannot say, "I can do with my
body as I wish" ---there Is another
body Involved, because the G0d given
miracle oi life is taking place.
What an awesome accounting will face
the abortionists when they face the
Supreme Judge on judgment day.

DECK
THE HALLS
Well, the boys down at Clly Hall are a.boul ready lo mo•e lnlo their brand new Ci ty
Council meeting hall. II wW have a.boul a dozen more seats than the presenl chamber
aDd Is only costing you and me aboul $200,000 1o build. Pretty cheap lor • dozen more
seats, right?
Of course, the burg801ling bureaucracy needs more room. so tbe old clambers wUl
be converted lo office space. Moving an enUre pollee departmenl out of City Hall
didn't seem lo vacate eoough space lor the japer shufllers.
Now, the next big problem Is how lo decorate and IUmlsh the new hall. The City
Arts Commission wants lo gel lnlo the act, and we haYe 2 councilmen who are supposed
to pick the IUmllure.
Here are oome helpfttl suggestloos:
Make lhe enUre hall like a Hollywood set, with changeable scenery. That way, when
the varlnus seltlsh pressure groups 1»-Y lbelr oolsy Ylllts, we could decorale lo sull
them. For uample, a horse-and.OOcgy atmospbere for lhe Corona del Mar 5th
Avenue bypua loUrs who hale CArs. And oome tiCenery from the rum "Airport" lor
· those who hale airplanes. Maybe some "Bridge on the River Knl" backgrounds
for the annual discussion of the hay bridge. But, lor most Council meetings, break-
any IUmlture, phony cream pies, and olher Hollywood comedy props would be
most approprlale. •
But, the most Important lblnc In the clllmber tlbould be a ll!ge blow-up of the City
charter, placed dlrec;lly In lronl of lbe C0t111ell, so they can read 11. I 1111••• lhe city
attorney should lllve his own copy, jalnted rliht on hlo desk, oo we can uold a repeat
of the DelaneJ fluco. Every time an ordinance comes up, the attorney could read
aloud from the portiDenl toeetJon of the clarter. .
And here's a ~ lor lhe CC>Uicllmeo•a own ..una area. First, let's put the
Council down In a pit aDd la¥0 momllersof 111e p!lbllc l!llk down to THEM lor a change.
· And giYe •cb councilman a lard cllalr, oo they won 'I cot lon comfortable and conduct
