* SPEAK OUT FOR DECENCY
It is time for cries of righteous
wrath !rem the silent majority, bearing
witness that our ccmmuntty still stands
for morality and decency. It is going
to take courage to do this, in the face
of the coostant and stealthy attack on
ethical standards of conduct, but it has
got to be done .
We have seen our State Legislature,
with the tiny margin of a tie-breaking
vote, enact the most shocking law in
California history --the 11consenting
adults" bill, or more correctly the
11hcmo and adultery" bill --and our
governor, who professes to follow a
strict cc:x1e of conduct, signed the bill
into law.
We have seen the effort to include a
homosexual center as a place for re-
ferral of troubled teenagers for counsel-
ing here tn Orange Co\Ulty --a project
re~ Ollly by a narrow S to 2 vote
of the CoWlty Board of Supervisors

We have seen our own canmunlty
Invaded by hard core x-rated movies
at the Pussycat Theat~r In Balboa, and
a jury verdict ruling that "Deep Throat,"
with all Its glorlftcaticn of revolting
sin, Is not violating our canmunlty
standards of decency.
That jury does not represent me, nor
do I accept it as a cross-section of the
moral ccnvictions of my neighbors. It
Is the local community standard of
righteousness that must prevail In judg-
ment of obscenity, according to a recent
ruling on pornography by the U. S.
Supreme Court. A jury of citizens, If
truly representative of the local code of
morality, would have ruled in defense
of our right to protect ourselves and our
community against pornography.
I do not accept the cry of the purveyors
of pornography and their defenders that
obscenity cannot be defined In law, or
that legislation against their evil product
would be abused to limit the freedan
ment protection of freedcm of speech and
press. 11 obscenity can have no restric-
tion, consider the awful prospect that
would surely come to pass: scenes or
utter depravity fornication, oral
copulation, homosexual and heterosexual
deviation --depicted on stage, on our
movie screens, and on television In our
very homes.
It was by legislation that the "homo
and adultery" evil is being sancticned,
although almost a 100 per cent opposi-
tion was expressed in letters from the
public. It is by legislation, by the people
themselves, that this wrcng can be
righted. Already, signatures are being
collected for an initiative to remove
the worse features of the bill, so that
local canmuntties would have the right
to refuse employment to hanosexuals
as teachers of our children and as
members of our police force.
Our citizens have the right to use
their power of legislation for self de-
fense. The alternative would be anarchy,
wtth each Individual doing as he pleases.
But the fundamental problem goes beycnd
legislation. There must be a recognition
of the fact that hcmosexualtty Is per-
version and sinful In the eyes of God,
ccndemned In the strongest possible
language In the Bible. There must cane
the knowledge that pornography Is
Idolatry, a transgression of the laws of
God, and a sure path to degeneracy.
Rousas Rushdoony, an outstanding
Chrt.stl,an writer, lecturer and minister,
rightly states that "the root of the
problem ts religious, and no answer
can Ignore this fact." In his recently
publtahed boOk, "Tbe poltttca of por-
nosraphy ," be wrttes, "Fr<m~ the stand-

Let Old Glory Fly!
The banner for our Bicentennial is still
Old Glory, and the Bennington flag, with
its '76, should be flown under the Stars
and Stripes ••• never in place of our national
emblem, especially on government or city
buildings.
The Bennington flag, as one historian
pointed out, was never the official nag of
the United States Government, but was flown
only in the battle of Bennington, Vermont,
on Aug. 16, 1777.
The '76 In the canton of this flag bas
gi'ien it more slgniftcance than the many
similar emblems used by various groups
during the formative period of our govern-
ment.
Let's fiy the Bennington flag with pride
as a symbol of 200 years of freedom; but
let's fiy It Wbere it belongs ••• beneath
Old Glory, the true aDd lasting symbol of
our oatJOD 's liberty.

NOVEMBER'S
BIRTHSTONE
One of the most beauti-
ful and durable of stone~
is topaz, a comparatively
inexpensive gem with a
wtde vartety of uses, par-
ticularly in modern, multi-
toned gold mountings -
from tlny rings to huge
brooches, bracelets and
lapel ornaments.
Topaz is named for the
Red Sea islandofTopuion,
between Egypt and Arabia.
Pure topaz is colorless,
but occurs in yellow, blue,
green, brown and red, a
wine-yellow color con-
sidered standard for '•pre-
cious topaz.'' Most pre-
cious topaz of today comes
from Brazll, while the non-
precious variety Is found
1n such places as Utah
a.Dd Yextco.
Topaz has always been
a symbol of friendship, and
an increasingly popular
gem you ca.n be proud to
own.

THE GUY
NEXT DOOR
A real nice guy lives next door to you for years, and you chew the tat and have a
couple of beers occasionally, and talk about high taxes and how 1t would be better it
we had less government. Then one day, the guy decides to do something about tt.
He runs for oUice -and gets elected.
Suddenly, like the chameleon, he changes colors and beromes a part of his new
environment. Suddenly, he starts spending your tax money like crazy. Becomes a
little Hitler. Turns into a leech. You try to tell him that we found out years ago
that leeching is not the way to cure disease, whether the disease be physical or
poUttcal.
This same guy, who may have voted against spending tax money to buUd a new ctvtc
center in Newport Center, suddenly votes for a new fire station, poltce station, then
a new Ubrary. And, lo and behold, the first thing you know, he's helped buUd a civic
center in Newport Center. The chameleon has melted right into his surroundings
among the free-spending pollticos.
What can we do to stop these nice guys from breaking us? Well, one thing we could
do ls put something in the city charter that forbids them from spending money on
projects that the voters have already voted against. We voted against the freeway
once, but the way our City Councll ls acting now, I wonder what they would do it the
state came back again and said, "Let's build that freeway anyway -to hell with the
people.'' _
The nice guy sits there at Clty Hall and says, '•Well, we've got a wealthy city, so
let's do this.'' Whose wealth Is be talking about? Yours tnd mine, that's whose.
And, when you get right down to U, Newport's not all that wealthy. There are plenty
of people 1n this town who are not rtch at all. I can remember when some of those
"nice guys'' at City Hall didn't have much dough, either. Now, they seem to have
plenty.
Of course, the Ulusion of wealth that we have here has been largely the creation
of tbe real estate crowd and the tax 11ases.:>r. U they say sand 1s worth more than
gold, that makes us think It's true. By constantly churning up the real estate market,
they have created the k1nd of "wealth" we tad In the late twenties, just before the
market crashed. They are bullAinc eastles of sand.
So, lf our Clty CouncU &Dd Clty Manager suddenly ftnd $275,000 ••extra" to play
flth, U meana )lit ooe tbJ.Dc: taxes are too damn high. Cut tues, and let Irvine buUd
heir owo Ubrary II they wa.ot ooe.
