* PLYMOUTH-A LESSON FOR TODAY
We have many blessings to be thankful
for, and chief among these blessings Is
the reason for the first Thanksgiving Day.
Howard Kershner, editor of Christian
Economics, explains it this way : "After
2 years of hunger and starvation, our
Pilgrim Fathers decided to end the com-
munist regime and to adopt the policy of
every man for himself. This called forth
such a great outpouring of energy that
hunger and scarcity were soon replaced
by an abundance of food. The flrsl Thanks-.
giving In 1623 was in reality a joyous
appreciation that the collectivist experi-
ment had ended and that individualism
and self reliance had ushered in an era
of plenty."
The historical recor 'l of the failure
of socialism in the Plymouth Colony Is
found In the w•ittngs of Go11ernor William
Bradford, whose "Plimoth Plantation"
covers the events from the landing of
the Mayflower in December, 1620, through
the year 1646. Here is his acc•mnt of the
miraculous result when socialism was
set aside in favor of private enterprise
and self reliance:
Now the wellcome ti me of harvest approached, in which
all had th elr hungrle be llies filled . But it arose but to a
Utle, In comparison or a full years supplle; partly by
reason they were not yet well acquainted with the manner
of lndeao corne, (and they had no other,) aliso thei r many
other lmployments, but cheefly their w~knes s for wante
of food, to lend ll as they should have done. Also much ns
stolne both by night &! day, before it be<:ame scarce eatable,
&! much afterward. And though many wer e well whipt (when
they were taken) for a few ears of corne, yet hunger made
other s (whom conscience did oot restralne) to venture. So
as tt well aweared yet fa mine must still insue the oext
year allso ....
EAR LY 1623: So they begane to thlnke how they might
raise as much carne at: they could, and obta1ll a beter
cr~ then they had done, that they might oot still thUJ
languish In mlserle. At length, after much debate of things,
the Governor (wit h the advise of the cheefest amonpt
them) pve way that they should set carne, enry man for
his own pertlculer , and in that r egard trust to them
selves ...
("Perllculer" ·~ or parUcular -~ means that each man
should have his own particular, or personal, plot o! ground
!or his own use In his own way. Ed.)
And so (th e Gove rnor) assigned to every family a parcell
of land, according to the proportion ot their number for that
end, only for present use (but made no devlsston for ln-
'herttance), and ranged all boys and youth under some
famllle. This had very good success; for U mad e all hands
very lndUJtrlous, so as much more corne was planted then
other waJse would have bene by any means the Goveroor
or any othe.r could use, and saved him a great deal of
trouble, and gave farr better conterde. The women oow
wute willingly Int o the ttekt, and took their Utle-ons with
them to set carne, which before would aledg wealmeu, aDd

Crn,dyear's "All-Weather 78" tire is built with
polyester cord that's tempered in an exclusive
process for optimum strength and resilience.
The wide 78-series tread is "reverse molded''
-a technique borrowed from race tire produc4
lion. The rib tread is well grooved, providing
plenty of traction edges for decisive grip. In
every detail, this tire gives you honest quality,
at a price that's in step with the time.

AboUt a half a dozen people showed up at Clty Hall not long agil aDd said they W11DI
our poor city to ask Uncle Supr Cor a few lluldred lllousaod bueke'for a senior
elttzen center (you know-something llketheooe we alreadY have in Newport Heights).
One of our City CouncUperaoos took the lleslres of this halt dozen as a "maDclate"
to ask for the money and spend 11 the way they said.
That brings up an Interesting questloo. Just what the heck Is a "mandate," anyway.
It's a favorite term of the poiWcla.os, so let's examine It
A few years ago, the people of Newport Beach voted overwbalmlogly to cancel the
PacWc Coast Freeway agreement. That's certainly a mandate. We even pot It right
In the ell)' charter and took tbe freeway power away from City Hall.
The people here also voted overwhelmingly against buUdlng a civic center In New-
port Center. But, they didn't put that ooe In the charter, so the City Council can go
ahead aDd buUd a civic center, piece by piece, right up there In Newport Center
wt1ere "" told them not lo.
And how aboUt Robin Hood? He must have had at least a half dozen people who
wanted him to steal from the rich and give to lbe poor. Now, there's a mandate tbe
poliUela.os are still following. You sea, they abide by certain "mandates" l11<1'14!nore
the ooes they doo'l like.
Some folke, who labor under the delusion that America Is a democracy, Instead of
a republic, tblnk the public can "maDclate" things by opinion poll. Sort of a eootlnulng
town meeting on a big scale. The voice of the people always being heard. Thank God
11 doo'l qull8 work that way. We are stUl a Constllullooal Republic, and the majority
doesn't always get lis way.
A law hundred years ago, some guys sat down at a table aDd voted to cruelly Christ.
A real mandate. Rule of the majority. Of course II'Joo ftlll to.earry democracy to
Its uiUmata, simple result, take a took at the lyn~h mob, Some guys ret together aod
say, "Let's lynch that fallow; hs'a got U comb!~. llobocly objects, or at least not
enough people In lhe crowd say no. 01 course the poor guy wlth the noose around
biB neck Is a lillie unhappy, bul who the bollia hi bl the taci'ol an overwhelming
majorll)'l Yep, there's democracy In action lor you • ths ljDcb mob.
It's best to have some baalc ·ruiN that lbe mob can't overturn. U's best to . ;ave
some real leadership that staDds oo solid rock. Look at the guv.ernmenta of France
and Italy, and some of the other "social democracies•• over Ute J)t.lt lew decades.
They change governments like most lolke change SOI>ke, because yesterday' a frleod
becOmes the member of loday's majority, and Utey ''mandate" a change.
01 course, here In Newport, 'It OOly lakes a half a dozen Colka to come up w!lh a
