Ever since filters were first introduced to cigarettes the trend
has been to limit cigarette tar.
And with every new refinement in filtration , the tar levels
went down.
Unfonunately, in most cases so did the taste.
Regardless of all the "low tar, good taste" claims you've read;
regardless of all the fancy filters and space-
IF 6ltering systems you 've tried -your own
taste told you: the less tar, the less taste.
This is a report on a new kind of cigarette.
MERIT. Only 9 mg. of tar. One of the
lowest tar levels in smoking today.
Yet with incredible flavor.

9 mg. tar MERIT was taste-tested against five current
leading low tar cigarette brands ranging
from 11 mg. to 15 m g. tar.

The results were conclusive:
Even if the cigarette tes ted 1uul 60%

smokers tested reported new 'Enriched

Alter a twelve year research effort, a
team of scientists at our Richmond

the .. key" flavor ingredients of tobacco as
they exist in cigarette smoke.
By adding only those ingredients which

we're now able to pack incredible flavor

What are some of the other

:.eem~ pl'etty common for parents
to think it is enough for the
church to gh·e their children reli-
gious in"truction . But the Bible
teaches that par-ents should have
a st rong religious teaching pro-
gram i1't thetT tromes. Deuteron-
omy 6 :6. 7 . speaking of the words
of the Lord (and notice that par-
ents mu!o;t have the words of the
Lord in their own hearts first) :
"And these words which I com-
mand you this da~ shall be in
~·ou r heart, and you must teach
thefn diligently to your children."
:-Jotice the word diligently. It
takes a real effort. Work at it
fa ithfully. Plan. Strive. Manage.
Change p lans if necessary in your
routine. ~u that you may teach
the Word of the Lord to you r
childre n diligently.
I enjoyed another verse in this
Mmt: chapter, Deuteronomy 6. in
m y Hihle reading latelr: ''And
when your ~on asks you in time
to come sayi ng, What mea n the
testimonies and the statutes and
t he judgments which the Lord
(\Ur . G ori has commanded you?
The n you mu!'t say to your son,

a little tot s it b~· her in church
during communion Sunda~·. for
instance, and had her Mk. "Why
a re they eating bread? W hy are
the_,. drinking the juice?" And
you bend down and whis per
"Mother will tell you when we get
home." And then whl!n you go
home you explain the meanings.
Now goi ng on with the idea of
teaching children. r have glven
you verses from the Old Te!ta-

"Well, we aren't under the Old

ment, for example in Ephe~tian;~;
6 :4. "And you fathers, provoke
not your children to a nger, but
brin.r them up in the nurture and

you have the teaching, t he nur.

Another hindrance is this: The
parent feels uncomfo rtable con-
ducting worship because of his
o wn weaknesse~. but if he can't
lead the de,•ot ions with a testi-
mony of Godly life. then he had
better make fa.mil~: worship a
time of confesl'ion. He should get
1·i ght with the Lord and make
things right with his family mem-

Another hindrance to family

t hink ifs too old-fashioned for
our modern rlay. Kenneth J . Fore-

objection. He sa~·s. and I 'm quat-

when the Ureeze grows wann and

Garden of Erlen. but when the

him to think of something more
up-to-date. Prayer is old-fash-

"Not only were there two trials, but in

The outline of the prnent lesson,
which is entitled "The Trial of Jesus," is
as follows :
I. The First Part of the Trial (Mark
,.,55-59} .
2. The Sentence of the Council (Mark
,.,60-65)
1M First Part of the Tn.J
In Mark 14:55-59 we read : "And the
chief priests and all the counciJ so~ght for

destroy this temple that is made with
hands, and within three days I will build
another mtde without hands. But neither
so did their wi.tnes:i asree toaether."
Venes 55·59 deseribe the flnt part of
the trial of Jesus before the supreme
court of the Jewith nation. See llao
Matthew 26:59.6). ''(55) It is noticuble
that the opposition to lnus is now
helded by the 'chief priests.' Throu&hout
the period of Quist's ministry It is the
PharDees who are pictured as His main
opponmts. But wflen He (Jesus} deanted
the tempae He challenttd the autho rity
and threttened the revenue of the
Sadducees. They now take the lead in
condemning Km to death. (56) The
Sanhedrin (the Jewi1h council) was busy
seeki111 testimony that would incrirniralk
Jesus. Thoulh mll'ly witnesses appeared,
their t"timollies were not 'equal.' (;,./).

Well, I see that a prominent Superior Court Judge, who bas spent man y ye2.r s
studying and adjudicating the law, has ru led that people sometimes ha ve more rights
then government 4 'experts . .,
I'm talking about the legal decision that says stan Hirschberg should be re-instated
as Newpo rt's buslness Ucense supervisor. The ).J(Jge says our Wir.ards down at City
Hall should not have fired stan, Our CUy Civil Se rvice Board said the same thing .
If you talk 1o most of the businessmen In this town, they wlll tell you lhe same. In
fa ct, the only people •llo seem to Insist that Stan •asn't doing a good job are the
City Manager and a couple of business people •ho dtdn•t like the way Stan Insisted on
strict enforcement of the Ia.,.
rr you 're In business In Newport Beach, Whether you're a savings and loan compan)',
a doc tor, a lawyer, or wt.tever, you should get a business license. Thank goodness
we hue oomeone•lthstan'sgumptloo. The rest of us should get u !Jnoolved as he does,
(t•s a Utile strange lo •atch these guys nperate. U a couple of fellows call up and
say we need a new SJiD law, or an old folks home, it suddenly becomes "a mandate
from the people.'• And, l! a buslnes5WOman calls up and says she doesn't like the
way a city ""rker •ears bls mustache, l guess the Wi.u.rds •ould fire the guy, )lsl
