Even though it has the same name as my newspaper, I am strongly opposed : _ to the grandio se plans for Ensign view • park in Newport Heights. • -This is a preposte r ous proposal fo r a bicentennial memorial, a super-costly and unnecessary venture at thi-s c ritical time when all of us ar e being burdened with an eve r-inc r easing load of taxes and s teadily rising cost of livi ng . The pr oject is all the m ore uncalled for bec ause . t he loc ation is already a view site, with parking space provi ded at no extra co st o n the gr ounds of the Fir st Baptist C hurch. Not only is t he vi ew .;ite ther e at no public expense, but t here is also some income for the city from the r enta l paid by the church. "!'.nd the r e is also the additional blessing of t he m i nistering service pr ovided for the communit y by that chur c h congr ega- tion. The i~itial expense estimated to get this bicentennial park under way -- $200,000 --is just the tip ofth·> iceberg, The total cos t would ce rta i nly be s everal tim es that estim ate, and then ther e would be t h·'! an:mal maintenance costs .. - for ever. T he pro ject was put in the right pe r spective la st week by Sue Ficker, president of the Centr al Ne WPort Beach Community Assn., with her r emark: "This is an awful lot of money to s p?nd on a view park." I believe that m1s:. of us burdened taxpayer s will t hink the s ame if this i ssue wer e put on the ballot for our decis ion. We would like to s ee our bicentennial year a s a time for easing our burde:1s , i nstead of facing new ha r dships beca use of a fr ee-spending City Council. This Is one of the Ten Commandments which too many people forget or !snore. But it i1 mort1 than a com- mandment. It does not merely forbid taking the Lord's name on our lips carelessly; it adds the waming "Thou shalt not take the name of the lord thy God In vain: fOR the l ord wlff not hold him guiltless thltt t•hth His n•me in vain." Don't commit this sin, He warns, for if you do you will hltve to face God Himself for it and He will not overlook it. Now. probably many of our reeders heve used the n•me Of God and Christ in vain again and a111n. They heve ~~:otten Into the hebit end find It diffi~utt to atop. Now what? How can •uch esc•pe the condemn•tlon of God upon this sin7 f irst, one of the principal rea- sons for not usins God's name in v•in is because of His infinite 1reatness. We -.nould .• n bow and worship before Him. The ucond reonon iS bee•uu H.-the infinite Go(t-..took upon Him humlin form and, as God the Son, died for our sins at calvary. Now would you want to curse and swear in His name? You wouldn't want people to curse and swear in your moth· er's name, would you? How much less should we curse and swear in Christ's name or God's name? Those who have this problem, invariably have neve r trusted Christ as their own Savior-as the One who died for fhelr sins. Those who hive trusted Him •s Savior usually never ere tempted to use His name In vain again. The game is a ver y complex thing, with weird rules that get weirder every year. Having been a player in the game, myself, a couple of times, l guess 1 should remind some of the newer players of how the game works: * lf you want to know more about your opponent, look at where he gets his money. In America, we Hke to say we get what we pay for . Who's paying for your opponent? If the Chamber of Commerce boys, the Irvine Co. executives, the Real Estate crowd and the big developers show up on a list of donors, you know you're in for a hell of a fight, because you're dealing wtth a guy (or gal) who is really in the chips. * Don't make any wild promises you can't keep. After all, even if you win, there are 6 other Councilmen and you need 4 vote s to get anything done (or three it tbey go to sleep again and forget how the City Charter works). * Don't spend too much of your own money. It takes money to run a campaign, but if enough people want you to win, they'll chlp in a few bucks. Tell your campaign people to get out there and get the dough. Or, if you are ready to follow the lead of Irvine, Real Estate, Chamber of Commerce and the developers, just stick your band out to them. But, remember, they expect results. * Take a close look at your opponent's record. If he or she has no record, an<f is simply a do-gooder who looks nice, remind the voters of that fact. lf your owonent is a guy who has been in office quite awhile, it s houldn't be hard to find some things he has fouled up. Of course, tbese same rules apply in one way or another to tbe voters. You might call them the "fans" of this crazy game. Too often, they elect people on the ba.sis of a nice smile, membership in a lotof socially-acceptable charity grOQps, or because a lot of big shots in town put their names on a list of ''sponsors.'' That's bow the same people keep control of this town -by getting their own bosom buddies elected over and over. The same wonderful folks who brought you Promontory Point, and who want to ; i ffi in some more hotels and condominiums, are waiting in the wings. See who they !ack before you pick your favorite candidates. Yes, the game ts called the Municipal Election, but some of us W'bo bave played the game, or watched it being played, can tell you the real name of the game Is ''.ONEY. Al Forglt P.S. I see where Bob WU100 wants to change the name of the Newport Freeway. ~ suggest we rename 16th St. the Bob WUson Freeway. U It hadn't been for btm, we would have bat! a nice freeway up there by now, with a second brldce acroa the bay. • * • • • • • * * • Spring ts just arouiMS tbe corner.
