DECISION MACAZINE, MIMHEAFOLIS, MINN.
N ineteen hundred years ago there
Jived in an obecure corner of
the Roman Empire one who
Would have seemed to a superficial
observer to be a remarkable man.
He engaged in a career of religious
teaching accompanied by a mini8try
of healing . At first he had the favor
of the crowd, but since he would not
be the kind of leader the people de-
manded be soon fell victim to the
jealousy of the rulers of his people
and to the cowardice of the Roman
governor. He died the death of cr im-
inals of that day, on the cross.
At his death his foJi owers were
discouraged. They had evidently been
far inferior to him in .discernment
and in courage, and now what little
courage they may · we had w88
gone. His death mea\~ the destruc-
tion of all their hopt~. Never, one
might have said, was a movement
mor e completely dead than the move-
ment which had been begun by Jesu.01
af Nazareth. · ,
Then, however, the &1Jt1)rising
thing happened. It is a fact of hie-
tory, which no real historian denies.
that those same weak discouraged
men. the followers of Jesus, began,
within a very short time after the
shameful death of their leader, in
Jerusalem, the scene of their cow-
ardly ftight, the most remarkable
religious movement that the world
has ever known, the movement oom-
.monly called the Christian Church.
What caused that remlfrkable
change in those followers of Jesus?
What cauaed those weak and cow-
ardly men s uddenly to become the
s piritual conquerors of the world 1
At that point the difference of
opinion arises. Yet even with regard
to· that point there is a certain mea-
sure of agreement. It is now admit-
ted by historians, both Christian
and non-Christian, that those fol -
lowen of Jesus became the founders
of what is commOnly known as the
Christian Church because they be-
came honestly convinced that Jesus
was risen from the dead. But what
produced that conviction 1
The New Testament, of course,
has a perfectly clear answer ro the
question. The belief of the d isciples
in the resurrection, according ro the
New Testament, wa.~ due simply to
the fact of the resurrection. Those
disciples came ro believe that Jesu.01
had risen from the dead for the
simple reason that Jesus had risen
from the dead. They had not only
seen his tomb empty but had seen
him alive after his death on the
croos.
Jf that explanation of the belief
of the first disciples in the resur -
rection be rejected, what shall be
put into its place! The answer to
that question which is given today
by all or practically all unbelievers
is that those first disciples of Jesus
became convinced that Jesus had
risen from t he dead because t hey ex-
perienced certain halJucinationa, cer-
tain pathological experiences in
which they thought they saw JeBus
before their eyes when in reality
there waa nothing there. In a hallu-
cination the optic nerve is really af-
fected j but it ia affected not by Ucht
raye eominl' from an external ob-
ject, but 1>7 oome pathological oon-

tion in ·order that the inftuence of
Jesus could continue to make ibtelf
felt. We, they by, can get r id of
that form. We no longer need to be-
lieve that Jesus rose from the dead
and appeared to the eyes of his dis-
ciples. But we can still let the in-
nuence of Jesus be felt in our lives.
In the changed lives of men who
have been influenced by him Jesus
has hi s truest resurrection .
This representation altogether ig-
nores the real character of the first
disciples' faith. What those men had
from the appearances of the risen
Christ was not merely the opinion
that Je!olus wu stiU alive. No, what
they had was the conviction that he
had risen. At the heart of their faith
was the conviction that J esus had
cUme something for them by his
death and resurrection. Christianity
in other words is rooted in an event.
If that event really took place, as
the Bible says it did, then Christi-
anity is t rue. If it did not take place.
&!\ the dominant vision theory holds,
then Christianity is false, and a
church that profeMes it is merely
an empty she11.
But is the message upon which
the Christian Chureb i8 foun<led
really true'! Did Christ rise from the
dead?
The trouble is that the thing we
are asked to believe is really unbe~
lievable .. We are asked t.o believe
that a d~d man ro"se ffom \.he dead,
arid' ~e· tiave .. hh-H1~8eef{!a -man wfio
di d that.
What is our answer to this objec~
tion? It is si mple. You say, my friend,
that you have never seen a man who
rose from the dead after he had
been 11\id in the tomb'! Quite right.
Neither have I . But what of it? You
and I have never seen a man who
rose from the dead; but then you
and I have never seen a man like
Je:-us.
What we are trying to establish
i~ not the resurrection of any ordi-
nary man about whom we know
nothing. but the resurrection of
Jes u~. There is a tremendous pre-
!\umption against the resurrection

of any ordinary man, but when you
come really to know J e8U8 u he it
pictured to us in the Goepels you
will say that whereas it is unlikelY
that any ordinary man should ri8e
from the dead, in his case the pre-
sumption is exactly reversed. It ill
unlikely that any ordinary man
should rise; but it is unlikely that
thi& man should not rise;· it may be
said of this man that it was impos-
sible that he Bhould be beholden of
death. The point iB that the thing hangs
together. We have in the Gospels
an account of a Penon who was en-
tirely unique. He was totally differ-
ent from other men in his moral
purity and strength. Yet he made
the most Btupendous claims---claim!!
that place him beyond the bounds
of sanity unless the claims were
true . The claims are true if the re~~~
urrection really happened; they are
a hopeless puzzle if the resurrE-ction
did not happen.
The evidence of the truth of Chris-
tianity must be taker as a whole.
The direct evidence for the resur-
rection must be taken together with
the total picture of Jesus in the G<m-
pels, and then that must be taken
in connection with the evidence for
the existence of God and the tre-
mendous need of man which is caused
by sin. If you take the Bible as a
whole you have a grand conaietent
account of God, of the world and of
human life. If you reject the Bible,
and particularly if you reject the
fact of the reBurrection, you have
a jumble of meaningless and de-
tached bit~ of information.
Oh. that God would open men's
eyes that they might see. that they
might detect the grand sweep and
power of hi s testimony to himself in
hifl Word! Oh , that he would take
away the terrible blindnesl\ of men's
minds! Has he taken away the blind-
ness of 7101tr minds. my friends? Do
you know the risen Christ today as
yo ur Savior and your Lord? If you
do not yet know h im. will you not
