• A MJSSION FOR JOHN ~HMITZ
lf there Is pcetic justice in politics,
it would be the return of John Schmitz
to the seat he once held in the U. S.
Congress. His victory in the June
primary race in the 40th District would
be reaffirmation of the need for in-
tegrity in government and recognition
of the high standard of service and
moral courage that J ohn so steadfastly
demonstrated in public office.

REMEMBER CHIC?
Before GoYemor BrowD turned oYer the state to Ms buddy Mer..-yo and went off
to campaign for president, I notice he said sometbing about us using too mu ch water
to fiush our toilets. Now, that opens up a subject dear to my -uh, heart.
It seems that toilet bowl tanks bold more ftter than Is needed to do the jab. I
asked a guy out on the beach about that, and he asked, "Wbat's a toilet?" I eJplalned
to him that they are devices that are sometimes put 1n public places, such as on
beaches, for the use of humans. He remembered haYing one at home, but hadn't
seen any In Newport.
Now, that got me to wondering about how we could solve our beach toilet shortage,
and at the same tlme help the governor save water. In my younger days, a comedian
named Chic Sales used to do a great routine about outhouses -the old 2-holers with
the moon on the door. Chic is long gone, but his oame lives oo as a ntclmame for the
outhouse.
Anyway, I figured what we could do Is ask the governor to Install some "Chlc
Sales" faciUUes on our beach. They don't cost much, they're just quaint enOUgh to
add to Newport's Ylllage atmospbere, and they wouldn't use any water at all. The
Coastal Commission would probably bave a hell of a tight over whether they should
be 2-holers or 4-holers, but eventually, they would have to okay It, as long as ocean
'fiews are not blocked. too much.
We even have a local state Assemblyman wbo Is eJperlenced at testing toilets by
standing on them for long periods of time, We would advise tum to test them with
arms outspread, )Is! In case he loses llls balance, whtch legislators are kllown to
do occasloaa.Uy,
We could stock . each toilet with some old cataJocs or Daily Plots, or even brown
paper bags left by the beachgolng pubUc,
Kids Who get a big kick out of -tipping over !Ueguard towers coold wtaen their
hortzons. They could start with 2-holers and work their 11'1.Y up to 4-holers.
Our bic81tenolal committee here In town would p-ly )Imp at the chance to
omctally dedicate the things, Probably paint them red-white-and-blue, or raise
flags on them. Maybe the first one could bue a plaque, But, lllOII folks, when
they're on their 11'1.Y to a Chic Sates, doll'! ban time to stop and read, Maybe we
could put the ptaques on the llistcle, to be l"ftd while In the ''tblnklnc" position.
Since many great decisions have been .-.cbed by folks sUtlng In tbat position,
maJbe we could buDd a speeii.J 6-boler for those "closed-door uocutlve sessions."
Tbe lady member of the Couucll would bave to seod In Dotes -or maybe pin them on
the wall.

God let It be known that He would grant man-
kind 120 years as a pE-riod of grace, and that
then He would bring In the Deluge to destroy
all human beings except Noah, his wHe, his
three sons, and their wives.
The all·knowtng Son of God put His stamp o.f
approval on the Bible account regarding Noah and
the Deluge, pointing out that the people went on
as though God's threat did not amount to any·
thl.ng, "until the day that Noah entered the ark,
and the flood came, and destroyed them all"
(Lk.t7:27).
The revelatJoa woflds whicH ·GOd ~..spoke ~to
Noah gave hlm certa.lnty : the cert.ataty . that God
would bring ln the Deluge, and the certainty
that he and his family would be kept aqye. In
the ark. I
Today, as we are harassed by the-unbeUef
apd mockery of theologians who seek to per·
suade us that the story of the Great Flood Is
not true, we dare not deny or doubt this part
of the Bible; but, just as Noah bad unshakable
certainty because of God's revelation words, so
God's revelation words must be-the divine source
of certainty also for u.s . ·
U God's revelation words couJd be unreUable
in regard to lbe Great Flood, then they could
also be unreliable ln: "God so loved tbe
world ... " (Jn. 3: 16).
So, then, we dare not overlook the fact that
the theologians who attack the early stories of
the Bible as stortes not to be beUeved .are
promoters of "doubt. 'T'hey are faithful chUdren
of tbelr tat.ber; for Just as thelr father ap-
proached Eve with, "Yea, bath God said!" JUst
10 these children of the Devtl approech us with
tbe notion that we cannot be sure as to whetbe.r
God spoke the revelation words which He tn-
fonns us He did speak.

response to taste of new low tar
Smokers are talking about
a new kind of cigarette.
It's MERIT The remarkable
new low tar cigarette ma~e
with the 'Enriched Flavor ..
~roce~s. . . .. , . . .
. , ~~IT has on1y 9 mg . tar.
One of the lowest tar level s
in smoking today. Yet , taste
tests proved that MERIT
delivers as much -or more-
