Two of the most strident assailants or capitalism were amo~tbe speakers ,_ Ralph Nader, the Raider, and Jane Fonda, the actress --both sell-styled consumer advocates. Both of them also have been quoted in the past as being advocates oi socialism, and that, indeed. must be thei r ultimate goal, since au the ir proposed "reforms" c all for action by government, tbus adding more and more power to the federal government. The inevsta ble result would be total 2:overnment, a socialist or fascist or communist di ctatorship, if these "con-. s umer advocates" achieve all their goals. Capitalism certainly is the favorite whipping boy of these ,would-be re- formers, and, for a certainty, it is easy to arouse e nmity against big money. But I notice that these s ell-righteous c ritic s stay right he re, in this evil capitalistic coWl try. rather than D:!Oving un to the ''Utopia" of communist Russia. o r commwtist China, or communist Cuba, o r socialist England, or s ocialist Sweden. And ther em can be found the answer to their urade Throughout the world and throughout hsstorv, ther e has been starvation and pri·:ation, abject poverty, epidemics of dtsease , inadequate housing, dearth of the luxuries of life. Then in one spot on th1 s glo be, in a new land, there develqped an economic system based on lrt:>f"dom an·j c apitalism --right here in JUr United State s of Americ a a nd the result bas been an un- precedented nse in pr oduc tion and wealth and welJ,besng and the highest standard of livin~; of any nation in all history. All this has been the result of free enterprise coupl e d with capitalism, which is not an evil m onster after all, but me rely the capability of accumulat- sn~; capital f r om the s aVings of thrifty Citizens SlJ that new t ools or production can be c r e ated. From these improved too ls of p r oduction comes the flood of lo w priced ~oods , r aising the standard of living nf even our lowly "peasants" above t hat o r t he pr ivileged classes in the communist and socialist countries. No nation c an defeat the grim problem o f poverty and starvation without tbe capitalist system of economy, Tbe agitato r who calls fo r the destructton of c apitalism to help the "downtrodden" is an ignoramus, an idiot, or a con- spirator. ·~ar .. DECORATION DA My grandad a.od his folks lett the old country to look tor a new Ute aad a better way of doing things. They took over quite a few acres of land and developed it into a dairy. They never paid the Indians for the land, but that's the way tbJ.Dgs were · done ln those days, unfortunately. My folks left France because they felt that the government there was )1st too powerful and wouldn't leave people alooe. lf you studied the philosophy of those old-time settlers, you'd find that most of them ·bad Ideas of freedom and a love for the laDd much the same as those of the American Jncttans. Those old folks are all gone, of course, and many of the freedoms they cherished are gone, too. When we remember and honor those wbo baYe gone before us oo Decoration Day (some folks call it Memorial Day), I'm going to put just as many lilies on grandma's grave as any of the soldiers have on theirs. Because, she was a soldier for freedom, too. We've bad a lot of wars since those old days. We woo some, lost som~, and in others we just quit. The troops didn't QUit. They foug~ and dled for as. Many <tied in nin, becaase .. tbey were ftgbtl.ng for pollttcal reasons, but they c:Ued for us, )1st the same. Doo't ever forget that. Don't ever cheapeo their sacrl.ftces by saytnc, '•Oh wen. they sbou.ldn't have been there, anyway.'' Because, you see, tbe little guy doesn't decide where and when and how wars will be fought. He just piets up bls pack and. b1s rlfie and goes where America sends him. He does his best for his country. And he died. . We have gotten away from giving these people their due. I think our school system is somewhat to blame. When I was a kid, all of us would listen jist before each Decoration Day, to an old soldier who would be lnvtted to the school. The .sacrifices and their meaning would be brought home to us tlrst hand. Then, we would follow the old soldier up the hill and put Wies on the graves of the dead. It meant something. I wish we could get back to that. )1st once a year, for ooe day. It would do us good to reflect on tbe sacrifices that made this country great. But, wbat can you eJpect of a scbool system tbat can't even teach people to read aDd write'? I baYe college kids comiDg to the store Jooldnc tor clerical wort, a.Dd they can't nen ftpre sales tax. Wttb all of the tu dollars the schools spead, you'd thlDk they would at least teach the kids _,, to co.t maoey. Well. maybe I'm jast a seat1meDtal old IIWl. Maybe the old n.Jues of thrift. rell)eCt for pareats and love of country are too old f:ubJaDecl. But, I doll't tblat ao.·l would just ll.ke to see Decoratioo Day be a day of proper remembruee. lnstead, u•s )list aootber loog weet.d. Drive safely. AL FORGIT BOONDOGGLE OF THE.
