DIAMOND SCARCITY
Today most of our dia-
mond supplies come from
South Atrtca, with produc-
tiou still concentrated
around the city of Kim-
berley, even though the
mlDe for which the clty
was named was closed In
1914.
At the original Kim-
berley mlne, there was
eJgbt mllllontlmesas much
barren ro<:k as dllmond,
and the ratio elsewhere ls
as high as ooe pe.rt dia-
mond to 30,000,000 bar-
reo rock.
Wheo you consider the
mlUlons of pounds of rock
wblcb must be moved and
sorted to produce just one
poaDd of dl.amood, and add
to this cost the skilled
cntt.smansbtp necessat'y
to OOOYert a roqb stone
to a gem, you Cll1 only
ma.nel at the tecbrlical
progress which now makes
poatble the pare•ee· of
beautttul diamonds at a cost
within reach or mUlions
of people.

my life. After one week of lying in bed in

would have any future in solf.
I wanted so much to get out of that
hospital and start practicina for the
Masters Tournament in April, but my
body was too weak to move. I hadn't
missed that tournament in 16 years. The
doctors said I would not be weU enou&h

lending her support I was receiving con·

depression, but it arrived that month
and settled on me in my hospital bed.
I thought a lot about God, my pur·

what would happen if I couldn't play
competitive golf. I remembered that

Believer's Path in Facing Apostasy
2 TIMOTifi' 2:1·15
FRO W "CHRISTI .-t,\' BE :\CON, Colli,gswooJ. N.J.
Golden Text : "No mar~ that 'Mitl~th mlllrtrkth himtel] wirlt the •ff.Jn of this
life; llllll he may please him who Mth cho~, him to be 11 so/din" (2 Tim. 2:4).
1]-HE second lettot of the
apostle Paul to Timothy is
the most personal of the
Pastoral Epistles. What is the
situarion of the peat apostle
at the time or the writing of
2 Timothy? 1-kre it is appropriate to
observe the remarks of a modem
Biblical k:holar : "Paul wntes from
prison in Rome. He hlls been a prisoner
for some tirTae : Onesiphorus, a Christian
of Ephesus, has already sought him o ut
and visited him in Rome (2 Tim. J : 16,
17). There has already been one hearing.
at which Paul was deserted by all men
and yet, with the lord's hel p, so
successfully defended himself that he
'was rescued from the lion's mouth ' (2
Tim. 4:16, 17). Bu t Paul has no hope of
ultimate acquittal: he is at the end of
his course. And he is virtually aJone ;
only Luke is with him . He (Paulj longs
to 5et: 'his beloved child' Timo thy once
more and bids him come to Rome
before the winter makes travel by sea
bnpossible (2 Tim. 1:4;4:9, 21). But he
(hulj must reckon wtth the possibility
that Timothy may not reach Rome in
time: and so he must put in writing all
that he hopes to tell Timothy in person
if and when he arrives.
"The letter f2 Timothy J is thus , as
8e111el (a German commentator of the
18th centuryj has put it, Paul's 'last wiU
and testament ,' in which he bids
Timothy pre~erve the apostolic Gospel
pure and unchaJlled, guard it against the
increasincJy vicious attacks of false
teiChen, train men to transmit it
faithfully , and be ready to tike his own
Jh.lre of wffering in the propagation and
defense of it. The most penonal of the
PUtoraJ Lettert is therefore 111 a teme
'offidaJ' too; for hul cannot xpante
btl penon from his ofT.ce . The man who
hal ~n 'xt apart for the C01pel of
God' (Rom. I: I) remains one with th11t
Goeper ln life and In death" (cf. Martin
H. Fran:tmllnn, 7Jie Word of tht Lord ero ... 1961, p. 161).
of false teachen who, by their
persuasive appeals to the itchlnJ ean of
the peOple, WiD make liis stand for the
truth even harder (4 :3-5). Paul is asking
Timothy to come to Rome, but he is
not sure that he (Tunothy J wiU get
.there before his end comes. Therefore
he (hulj sets forth these things in th.is
epis-tle.
"2. Summom Paul's further purpose
is to summon Timothy to Rome u soon
as possib le (4:9, 2 1a). As the result of
his first appearance before the court he
(PluJI has been remanded to prison for
an indefinite time, yet he hu no hopes
of a release (4:17; 4:6-S). Ever yearning
for the presence of his belov~ Timothy
in the loneliness of his imprisonment
(I :4), he asks him to come to Rome
with haste. Otherwise he may be too
late. In coming he {nmothy I is to bzinl
Mark alone (4 :11) and also bring the
needed cloak and the books and
parchments which he (PauJJ had left at
Troas(4 :13).
.. 3. Tntimony. But the epistle (2
Timothyj also offered Paul an
opportunity t o record hil own
valedictory. HI vine yt;ars ago been
broua:ht into ~t relation with God the
Father throuih Jesus OuW as his
Saviour and Lord , now, with a full life
of .errice behind him, he (PauJI can
loot death in the face unafraid. He can
bear rinsinl testimony to the believer's
triumph over life and death in Quist.
'There are no more beautiful words of
Ouistian victory than those wttich the
Apostle utters in view of his impendin&
martyrdom: 'for I am already Win&
offered, and the time of my departure is
come . I have fouaJu lhe aood flght , I
hne ftnished the coul'le, I have kept the '
faith": henceforth there is lakl up for me

As Mom had told me. he was there. and
he bas been then all lhrou&h my life.
Seven years later l•u led into a fuller
understandina of God . A man named
Marcus Levy built upon what Mom' had
taught me. From him I learned two
important thinas: throuah faith in God a
person's life can be richer and fuller;
and throuah faith ''unbelievable'' chinas
can and wiU happen. Mr. Levy pve me
a little booklet which I read over and
over. It wu throu&h this booklet that I
accepted Jesus Christ. Funny thiq, t~
day I can't recaU its name.
During those early months in 1973 I
was determined to get well, but the days
of my recovery draued. In early April I
einbarked on a physical fitness proaram
and felt a little stronger, but depression
set in again when the time of the Masters
Tournament arrived. There I was, in
South Africa, lame, not gettin1 a cbuce
to play, and the year before I ha4 been
so confident that I could win the bi&
ones in 1973 . The thougllt flashed
through my mind that I miaht not ever
play again.
One memory helped me at this point. I
remembered Tom Nieporte, an Ameri·
can pro golfer from Long Island who
was my roommate 12 years earlier at the
1961 Masters Tournament. Nieporte bad
been reading Thomas ~ Kempis-' Tlw
Imitation of Christ, and on the ni.Jht be-
fore the final round of the tournament.
he handed me the boot and asked me to
read the chapter on edvenity.
I studied those words •ritten SOO
years ago: "'It is &ood for us to have
trials and troubles at times, for they
often remiod us that we are on proba·
tion and ought not to hope in any
worldly thiQ& .... When a man of &ood
will is afflicted . . . ht realizes dearly
that his greatest need is God, 'frithout
whom he can do no Jood." That eve-
ning in Augusta, Georp, I understood
for the first time the purpose of ad•er·
sity. Next day, durin& the tourriament,
on at least two different occasions I
found myself in trouble, I prayed and
thanked God for the trial.• I'm sure the
main factor in my first major visit to the
United States was leamina to accept ad·
vcrsity and ·arow from it.
During the month$ of recovery in 1973
I came to recoJO,iu: the fact that God
was allowing this adversity to build my
faith. I accepted the pain, thanked him
for the suffering, and went on restin&
and exercising on my road to good
heaJth. But when I returned to America
and rejoined the professional &Oifers'
tour in May I found I had lost much of
my distanct and was hooldna the baiL
Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino pve me
some lessons and tried to hdp me, but I
couldn't get my game together.
For seven weeks I played poorly and
knew there was no usc goina on, so I
headed home. It was a sad time. Viv·
ienne and I talked things over, but she
didn't know whether to eneourqe me to
practict or to develop a new career. I
spent a month working on my ranch
north of Johannesburg, choppina wood,
getting lots of exercise, playin& with the
children, and resting. I prayed and asked
God what was next for me.
One day I felt my old strenat-h comin&
back. I went to the practice tee and
noticed the familiar rhythm returnina.
Shortly thereafter I rejoined the tour,
won the Southern Open in Columbus,
Georgia, and the Piccadilly World
Match Play title in Britain. April, 1974,
arrived, and again it was time for the
Masters Tournament. I was so srateful
to God to be able to play, A penon
never realizes fuUy how much health and
happiness-mean until they are taken
away.
My game was at a peak, and aoina
into the final nine holes I wu in the &cad.
Jack Nicklaus sank a ~foot putt for an
ea&Je on the llth hole to cut my lad to
one stroke. I coukl pick a hu.Ddn:d play·
ers I'd prefer Jurkina be:hiod me rather
than Jack Nicklaus! But on tbe 17th hok
my approach shot landed Jest; than 12
inches from the hole. A birdie, followed
by a par on the last hole, ICICUred my
seventh major championship.
Golf is one of the most ditf)C:U]t pma

yourself: no team, no coach. It roq~
courqe, and that is what I pray for. Not
