What are the roclca and ohoala which we ought to shun if we would not be of the "ma,.Y' who deal deceitfull with God'• truth? y We corrupt the Word of God most cianceroWIIy when we throw any doubt on the_ plenary ioapiration of any part of Holy Scripture. This is not merely corrupting the cup, but the whole fountain. This is not~ Jy corrupting the bucket of living water which we profess to present to ou.r people, bul. poisoning the w~ole •ell. Once wrong on this point t he whole subetance of our faith is in dan,er. It is a flaw in the foundation. It is a worm at the root of our 'theology. Once allow this worm to gnaw the root and we must not be surprised if the-branches. the leaves and the fruit little by little th!cay. The whole subject of inapiration, I am well aware, is surrounded with difficulty. All I would say is that, in my hUmble judgment, notwith- standing some difficulties which we may not be able now to solve, the only safe and tenable ground to maintain is this-that every chap.... ter, and every vente, and every word in the Bible h.u been "given by inspiration of God." We should never de8ert a great principle in theology any more than in science, because of apparent dift\culties which we are not able at present to remove. Suffer me to mention an illustra- tion of this important axiom. Thoae conversant with astronomy know that before the discovery of the planet Neptune there were difficul- ties which greatly troubled the as- tronom erS respecting certain aber- rations of the planet Uranus~ These abenationa puuled the minds of astronomers and some of tbem aug ... ,..ted that they might _.;bly prove the whole Newtonian system to be untrue. But at t hat t ime a well-known/ French astronomer, Urbajn Lever- rie r , read belore the Academy of Sc..ience a paper in which he laid down this great axiom -that it did not become a scientific man to give fectl" pnctleal &J>Dlieatlon of it. By the natural birth you were born into the family of your Mrthly parents. By the new birth, you are born int, the family end houaehold of God. By the natural birth you become a partaker of the physical nature of your earthly pa.renta. When you were born, you were made flesh oft heir fleeh and bone of their bone. ~ow, by the new birth, you thereby become a partaker of the very nature and life of God. No wonder then that the Lord Jesus said, "Ma rvel not that I said unto thee. Ye must be bom again." IU. No Subttitute ror the New Birth The new birth is nec::euary beca use thPre is no substitute for it. Many peo ple these days are trying to !lubstitute some little panacea of their own fnr the ills that beset them. They are trying to find AOme other remedy for the sin-1ick nHS of thei r 80UI!1: but there is ebAOh.ttely no substitute for the new birth. Education i1 no substitute. You educa te a fool and you make h.im a sillier fool than ever. You e.duc::ate a raSC"I!.I and you make him a more dangerou!l rau:al than evrr. Therefore. educ::ation. culture, and rPfinement can ne,·er substitute for the new birth. MorRiity and good works are· no auhstitute. I don't c::are how moral you may be: I don't c::are what good deeds you may perform: morality and good work s never yet sa\'e.d a 'JOul and will never save a &~:mi. Tht> Word of God t.ells us that outside or ,Jesus Chri st. when you reject Him, all of your righteou!lneMell are but as filthy rags in God's sight. The only difference between a moral man who rejects the Saviour end an immoral reprobate wbo rltiects Him is that one will go to Hell moral and tht' other will go to Hell immoral. Oaly a Spiritual lllnll Give~~ a New Nature Thr new birth is neceuary because on"e must pouess a spiritual nature t.o enjoy spiritual t.hings. A penon to enjoy Heaven must have a spiritual nature. 1f a person who has ~r been born aga in could do the unthinkable, could get into Heaven, he coul~ not enjoy it. Why? He'd be just hke a fis h out of water, for to be happy in any place you must be in harmony with your surTOundings. The new b irth is neceasary becaus~ it is the dividing line between Heaven and Hell . No eoul ever went to Heaven unle~~~ he had l:leen hom again; and. on the other hand. no soul who hu been born agai n h.u ever gone to Hell . Tht> new bi rth is not reformation, fur reformation is the work of man: but regenera tion or the new birth is the work of God. Refo"tmat ion is turninf! O\'er a new lear. Let us beware of giving up a ny first prin- ciple in theology. Let us not give up the great principle of plenary inspi- ration because of difticulties. The day may come when they will all be solved. In the meantime we may rest &88ured that the difficulties which beset any othe r theory of inspira- tion are tenfo ld greater than any which beeet our own. I won't charge either of th em anythin~, ... because they're bot h down on thei r lu ck a bit .• Earl, old boy, I hear you teJI a real good racial joke, \lrith old-fashioned locker room style. Now, I think that's great, but here's your problem: You're in the wrong town. In Washington you get fired for saying those things. ln Las Vegas, you'd get a standing ovation. Dirty jokes a re very big in the land of the poker chip. Those politicians never could understand jokes, anyway. You're wast ing your tim e there. Sharpen up your act a bit (you should get a few Polish jokes in your repertoire) and take the next night to Las Vegas. lf you tell 'em you're going t here to gamble, they'll probably give you a half-fare ticket, 2 !Week nights in a hot el room, and a ticket for a free cocktail. That's mor~than thosP kill1Jys in Washington will give you. right, Earl'.' Maybe you could get appointed Secr etary of A ~r iculture of the state of Nevada. Ought to be a real easy job, because t he only thing that grows out ln the countryside there are a fe-w cathouses. The}·'d REA LLY apprecia te your jokes out there. Charlie Finley, we-know you a re having a problem becau se a lot o{ your high - priced Oakland A's ballplayers are leaving . They figure they should be millionaires before they·r~ 30 yea rs uld, playing a little boy's game. You told them to go take a walk. Now , I'm on your sir1 e, but your attitude just might leave you without a ball club. Boy, are you in luck! t just found this grea t team for you. l'nt not talking abou t a third baseman or a pitcher, Charlie •.. I'm talking about an entire TEAM . And you ~w what they want more than anything else'? They want to play winning base- ball, Charlie. You don't /lave to change their diapers or give them private s uites in hotels, or anything. Ju st give 'em a bat and a glove and a map of whe re the ball parks are. They'll do the r est. The guys I'm talking about are the Hawaii Islanders team in the Pacific Coast League. They just won their league championship AFTER the tE>am WE'nt into bank- ruptc}·. The players weren't even getting meal money, fro m what 1 hear. And when they went to Salt Lake City to play for the league championship, they rode city busses (paid the fare themselves) and carried their own equipment. When they won the championship, the airlines wouldn't even fly the team ba ck to Hawaii, because the froot office owed the nyboys too much money. But, what t he hell, they WON, Charlie. Sign 'em up • the whole danged team. They're a bunch of mavericks, just ilke you and me, Charile.
