• THEY'RE MORE EQUAL THAN ~N
Who can possibly be against equal
rights for women? But wait just a
moment, before you answer too hastily.
First ask, "Equal to what?" Equal to
us men folks is what the Equal Rights
Amendment is all about, and, as Mary
Schmitz so effectively puts it, women
ought not be lowered to that level.
Mary, wife of former Congressman
J olm G. Schmitz, presented a devastat-
Ing analysis of the proposed constitu-
tional amendment at the recent meet-
Ing of the Friends of the American
Opinion Bookstor e . She is an articulate
speaker and we ll informed on the pro-
position that the ERA should be re-
jected. Here is a summary of her
argume nt:
It Is an errooeous complaint that woman faces injustice
1D tbe United states, She enjoys more Tig hts and privileges
tbaa worn-. 1D any other country •• the fruits of our
Judea-Christian heritage, whJ.ch e:u.lts womubood and
respects the family as the buic untt of our society. She
also er~joys the fruits of our free enterprise eeooomy,
wllteh bU produced inventions and prc, ducts that hJVe
freed her from drudgery and back-breaiing toil.
ERA effect oo the famUy would be destructive. Women
now have an Important property right In present laws
requiring the bu5band to support the wife and to provtde
her With a home. All tbese laws would be Wiped out by ERA.
whieb states that there shall be DO discrlmtnattoo based
on se:z.
The chief aryument of the ERA promoters ls equal
pay for equal work. But ERA woul d 00 oothing about pay.
, so that blows the ERA case, Federal and state laws alr~y
reql.llre equal employment Tights. The etftcacy of tbese
laws has been demonstnted. by tbe successful suit apiMt
the Telephooe Co. for back pay for women becuse of
DOll .promotion and lower pa.y.
WMD mUftary senlee 'draft is reinstated, ERA would
reQUin! au women 18 aoo O'ter to register with their draft
board. Dralt laws to date hu e spec.J.lled '·all males 18
and o.-er." UDder ERA this" would be changed to ''alJ
per.!JCDS," In time or n r. wo men. wotJid be assigned to all
ditties, including fronl llne combat. Federal law oow
prohibits women being assign«! to combat areas. UDder
ERA,· tills prohlbltloo would be unconstttutfollal. Women.
could oct be assigned only to safe missions in wartime,
because that would be dlscriml.Liatory on the basis of sex.
The purpose of the dralt and of military sentee is to
provide lor the defense of our country. The effect of ERA
would be to lower the quality of our 02tiooal defense.
because men woul d be detracted from their primary
mi.uioo of fighting t he enemy u d would be more concerned
about tbe safety of women on combat duty.
Present aoti-dlsertmtnatlon laws contain provisions lor
u ceptioos based on se:r -~ as in sldgle se:z schools,
stncle ses classes aod orpniutlons ~cb as Boys Scouts
and Glrls Scouts. Under ER A, all IIUCh e:zceptions would
be uDCOOSt1tut1ooal,
ADotber Mrlous dlsadnnt.t.&e of ERA Is that awronl
woalcl wrtte it Into the U, S, Constitutloo, and when fOWld
to be destnaetiYe and unworltJ.ble, U could be etwaged or
repealed only by the dim cuu process of another coo-
stltDUooal ameodmeot.
Tbe present status of ERA ls approval by 34 states ,
1ncluc11Dg Callfornia; 38 are needed. The clrite has been
slowed by the growing awareness of the mlseblef it "WOUld
create. Some states have rescinded tbetr awronl. Such
a drl,. ls now under way in Callfornll in the form of a
petition betDc prepared for submission to the state legts.

• PROTEST "THE PASSOVER PLOT"
If no one wer e to protest the blasphemy
against God, I suppose the very stones
shOuld cry out. That is the case with
"The Passover Plot ," a book written
In 1966 and now a film being sbown
In theaters throughout the nation. The
author, Dr. Hugh Schonfield, seeks to
present Jesus Christ as a revolutionary
wbo faked death on the cross In a plot
to Incite his followers to rise up against
Roman tyranny . The Bible, which 1.8
the word of God, affirms that Jesus Ia
God, but Dr. Scbonfield accuses God
of deception and lying. What an awe-
some accusation to account for on the
day of judgment I

A CON T RA C T
I S A P RO MI SE
Since paper was invented in Egypt
and charcoal discovered a.s a method
ol writtng, contracts have been
pretty binding ••• almost.
In 1944, the state bought the raJ I-
road rlght -of-Wlly along Newport
Blvd. as a future site of an ex-
panded lllghway. They took the
property off the t.a.x rolls. It wa.sn't
ultU 1953 that the state signed a
treeway agr~ment with the county
to buUd the Newport fr~way (now
the Com Mesa freeway).
Now, don't forget, they havetakeo
SO acres or more off of the tax
rolls r lgbt down the center or our
town. It's beeo vacant for years.
Later. tbe clty and state sjgned
DUme.rous agreements -all at the
u r&ing or the state, maldng the
rlgbt.or -way luger aod larger and
taklog more land off the tax rolls.
For aU these years, the free-
way bas ll.lng onr the city like a
Damascus sword, stopplng develop-
ment, splitting the etty and costing
us tu dollars. Now, to and behold,
the city government comes up with
wUd Idea of spending city tax money
to study altema.te tramc solutions,
just in case the sate doesn't Uve
up to Its contract and bulld the
freeway.
I don't undt>rstand this. Why, do
we run like a bean pup, our tall
between our legs? Wher e is our
pride? We have every right to ex-
pect and to DEMAND that the state
quickly complete Its part of the
contract bargain.
Any city councilman who doesn't
th.lnk so Is not llvlng up to h1s oath
to protect the interests or our ctty.
These Council members should
either get with It, or get out -
or be thrown out. To even discuss
spending $15 mlllion in local laxt>s
to partially take over the state's
obligation shou ld only be r onsidered
as a last resort, after other avenues
bue been tried.
A couple of avenues at least
are open. We could o~lte ~
all-out e!fort, as we did ror the
useless Corona del Mar freeway,
and much on the HlghW2y Com-
mission with a demand that they
complete OUR rreeway.Or, we could
take the st3te to court, as the
city of F'resno dirt.
It's time for our city governrnt-nt
to show a Uttle ~umpt1on. As old
Harry Truma.n once said, tr they
can't stand the hea.t, they should
get out or the kitchen.

These wonten lost their lives
in the Colorado flood ...
'
But they are still alive.
They have a message for you.
On July 31 these women hastily left a weekend retreat 1n the Colorado Rock1es
They had been warned to flee a flash flood whJCh was roanng down the canyon.
They started out . but never reached the bottom of the canyon abve. More than 100
o ther s also lost their lives in the B ig Thompson Canyon that same mght .
He reaches our 1n love to all men and women, offering His forg•veness, peace
and comfort through Jesus. C hrist. So there is no reason to fear life or death.
Jesus saKi, "I am..the .re;su rrect10n. and ..the life; whoever believes in Me shall
l•ve even if he dies. and ev€-ryone who lives and believes in Me shall never die"
(John II :25,26). A tragedy, ,:>eople say. It is certain that these seven women who were part of the
staff of Campus Crusade fo r Christ International will be deeply missed by
fa mily, frie nds and fellow staff members.
Bur what these women and their families would want you to know is that they
are mo re alive than ever-m heaven. That they lived a full and wonderful life
A personal relationship with Jesus Christ doesn't begin at death-but it is
availabl~ to you now-in life . Twenty-eight other women leaders of Campus
Crusade for Chris t Internationa l left tha t retreat wlth these seven. They are still
alive -physically as well as spiritually.
o n this earth. And that they now a re better off in the presence of the lovtng God
a nd Savio r whom they served.
If you were to die today, do you know for certain that you would go to heaven?
Would you spend eternity in heaven wlt h C hrist or separa ted from Him forever. For
those who have a personal relationship wit h Jesus Christ, death's s ting has been
taken away. God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in trouble.
But they also have a more keen awareness of th e delicate bala nce between life and
death. And more than 5,000 other staff of Campus Crusade fo r Christ have a
keene r awareness of life . Fo r them, life is Christ. For the women who died,
Christ is life . The message that follows explains what these wome n want you to
know-how you can find new life in Jesus C hrist. They had committed
themselves to sharing this message in life or in death.

ADRIANA~S
LOGIC
I think Jerry Brown must have tli.red a lady bus driver to run tlte state's transporta-
tion department. She just came to Orange County, told us we have a great road
system, and said we should take the bus.
Now, I don't know who this Adriana Gtanturco is, or what kind of experience she
has. In fact, untn somebody told me she Is director of Cal trans (Call!. Dept. of
Transportation), I thought she was a soprano in an opera, or something.
I understand she came from back East somewhere, and fs supposed to bi an
eJpert on transportatloo. Been back East lately? Looks like lhey may have to call
her back Mme. Stnce she came West, traffic sure is a mess back there.
Adriana says Coast Highway Is fine just like It is. Said we're getting "superb"
use of our ca.rs. Then, she turned right around and said more people should ride
the bus. Maybe she got caught up In the Carter-Ford spirit and decided to have at
least 2 viewpoints oo everything.
She summed up her opinion on Coast Hwy. by saying it sOOuld be ''presen:ed the
way It is." I guess the next thing to come out of Sacramento will be a bill making
the highway a historical mooument, never to be changed. Anybody caught trying
to get the trafllc to move Will be arrested for delacing a historical treasure.
Traffic gets backed up so far oo the highway, prohably some of. the cars will
become rellcs of history, too, before they get where they're going. You start off in
your new Detroit machine, and before you get to the other side of the bay, you're
driving a classic.
Adriana says that "when roads are expanded they become congested." Sure hope
she never taltes up arterial surgery at Hoag hospital. Or takes o•er the design of
our sewage system. Or has anything to do with designing catsup bottles.
I'U teU ,..,, With Jerry Brown and Mervyn Oymauy and Adriana and all those
other '•uperts" up 1D Sac ramento, I sure feel a lot better. I'm gonna write and ask
them to help me solve my parkloc lot problem here at the store. You see, I haYe
customers who want to park, but there uo dozens of hippies Who need Ill park their
nos oo my lot eYery day, too. Tbe pollee won't give them Uckets, so I'm sort of
stumped abotrt wtat to do. I'm gonna check with Jerry, Mervyn and Adriana. l'U
bet they -.1 Adriana down here Ill loU me I need a smaller parldng lot.
Come Ill tblnk of it, Adriana may still be arouod town, unless sbe was able to
ret a bus back to Sacramento,
