But first there was a small problem to be s olved --how to get tickets for perhaps the most popular offering of the New York C ity Opera Co. I had written quite some time ago, ordering four orchestra seats, but back came the reply that the Dec. 27 Rigoletto performance was sold out. I made an- other try b y letter, asking for com- plimentary tickets for a newspaper pub- lisher who had heard the opera probably a hundred times over radio but had not seen it on stage since attending the Verdi theater in Florence, Italy, 31 years ago, before coming home from Wo rld War !!. Also, I had promised my two teenage daughters that I would take them t o s ee and hear my favorite opera. The public r elations manager of the Music Center Opera Assn. responded to my plea. He wrote: "Since you are a publisher, and a gentleman who has a newspaper named the Ensigo, which I've seen and enjoyed; and, since a guy has a drawing of a sailboat in his masthead, he can't be all that bad. But we all decided to go just the same, counting on last minute cancellations. We en- joyed an uncomplicated ride along the Santa Ana freeway, off at the Spring St. turn-off, right on Temple, and soon an arrow indic ator to the left to "Music Center parking." There was no trouble finding the right spot, and in we drove to the underground parking in the Music Center block. We were early arrivals, getting there about 7 p.m., and there was a scarce half-dozen ahead of us lined up in front of the box office, with the same hope and expectation as we bad. Two o r three purchased tickets from individuals who came by. The rest of us waited, and the line grew longer. There came announcements from the ticket window : "a single" or "a double" available. Soon we were at the head of the line, and then again, about a bali bour before curtain time, came the welcome call, "a double," and we were able to buy the two extra seats -- also in the orchestra section, not far from the two complimentaries. And at 8 p.m. we were listening to the ageless charm of Verdi music, involving in- trigues of 16th century Italy instead of 20th century Harbor Area.
