EWAGE EXTINCT
I see where oar state Fish and Game Dept. is oow in the sewer buslness up ih
the Bact Bay. T~t':s just great. Because, if their past record means anything,
sewage wUI soon become extinct. Won't that be wonderful? Instead of worrying
-about pumping It upbill or letting It run downhtll, we can simply turn U over to
Fish and Game, and 1t will disappear ••• PoofT
Why? Well, look at the record: over the years, Fish and Game bas presided
over the extinction, or near-extinction, or one species or fish after another. They've
done 1t by letting the big canneries use airplanes, purse seines and other mass
weaponry to fish our ocean almost bare. ;"'~
And, a few .J!lOnths back, Fish and Game went lnto tbe highway business, and
guess what? •.. University Drive dlsa.ppearedl
Now, besides the sewers, they're worldng on the anctmvtes. The canneries are
allowed to increase their tonnage more a¥-more. Eveo the seagulls, the seals and
the big !Ish that are left ore g<~log lmlgry. They hue 110 ancboY!es lo feed on.
There's a rule somewhere that fish can't be used for ferUU.r.er. So, whl.t do the
canneries do? They grind up the anchovies and call it ''ftsb meal,'' not fertilizer,
While tho Flsb and Game boys are getting Into the fish ferUllter and human
fertUtzer business, I wooder U they could tell me bow a 500-boa.t fishi.Dg fieet and
2 can.oertes manage to enst up at Moss La.odt.ag without any sewers at all?
Olcl·Y, let's loot at this Bact Bay sewer problem, which seems to have stumped
the Flsb and Game boys and . the Coastal Commissl.oo. As I understand it, we need
more sewer capacity io the area. We must either add a pump!ng station to the
Jamboree Blvd. Una or add a new cravtty line under Bact Bay Dr.
Let~s see if we can help these fellows out: First, there was au old saying 1n the
Marines that goes "The (bleep) flows doWilllU!." That meant that the privates
g<~t all lhe dirty wort. But, It also mOOils that bleep does, Indeed, now downhill.
It's lmown as the law of gnY!ty. Of course, yoo can also mate lbe bleep run up-
hill, If you want to PJt In a big PJmp and pay $37,000 a year lo run lt. That's a lot
of money )1st to PIMP the good old bleep. Gravity, on the other band, Is free.
or course, we could always follow the Far Eastern tradiUoo, where they tave
tho farmers (Ute the Irvine Co.) carry the stuff to the fields In "boooy buckets"
on the ODds of a pole. Might help PJt the I"Jne farming business back In lbe black
(or brown, at least~
There's one last resort. In combat areas, tbe troops b.arn tbe bleep 1n sawed~
oU clrams and It goes up In smoke. With our oalllral oosbore breezes, Santa Ana
would get lhe -1 of Ibis IOYeiJ smoc. Wh., the bnue sblfts ••• well, IDucb
luck, Newport. That's What they call a Santa Ana w!Dd.
Now, maybe THAT's a Job the Flab and Garno could handle, If lbe Coastal Com-ml-helped tllem.

Ruth Swope isn't old enough to
quality. At 81, she has to move
out to make room for a senior
citizen tx..me.
Aoother strange thing about this
project Is that the city ls doing It
without any environmental Impact
report or any public hearing. Their
only excuse ls that the city has
federal money that has to be spent.
After llving here 61 years, 1f
Ruth Swope Isn't a senior clti%en

But, the way she Is being treated,
you'd thlnk she Just c Umbed out of

They've offered Mrs. Swope $36,-

could get $60,000 1f the city woold
leave her alone. Sbe doesn't want
to go on welfare, and she sure ca.o•t
buy another pJece ol la.Dd with a

We all should bue the ldnd of
