Beach and Costa Mesa have become involved in the Feds' scheme for re- distributing wealth, and thus transfor- ming our Republic into a s ocialist state. The mechanism for this scheme is fe deral uaid" in its many forms -- the most insidious being revenue shar- ing and HUD funding. Council members in ·both c ities are eagerly reaching out for the handouts. The Costa Mesa Coun- cil even pays a share of the cost of a "man in Washington," whose mis- sion is to get all the goodies possible for his bosses. Mesa Mayor Norma Hertzog was recently quoted as being appalled at the growing power of the federal government. Her dismay had a hollow ring, because she made that observation on returning from a junket to Washington, where her objective was to get more federal money for Costa Mesa, thus giving the Feds even m ore power . The Newport Council had a golden chance last week to help turn the tide. There had been murmurings of a Coun- cil desire to get out from under the HUD chains by letting go of the HUD funds for that senior citizens center in Corona del Mar. Some local clubs, on very short notice, came up with offers to raise funds for the center; But Council greed over came good sense, and Newport remains on the HUD gravy trai.p, unmindful of the ultimate cost --both in loss of loc al integrity and monetary loss, because any project at least doubles in cost if the federal government does the funding. But the greatest danger is in the blackmail tactics of the Feds to force local city officies to join in the social- ization of our nation. Our Council mem- bers are whistling in the dark, pre- tending that they can take the money without the strings and chains. HUD has already laid out the chains, but hasn't clanked them very loudly yet. But the ultimatwn is sure to come: Carry out the commitment to provide low cost housing, as specified in the HUD funding agreement. This blow is not going to hit only Newport and Costa Mesa. Along with the grants of HUD money throughout the nation will come the demand for providing housing for low income folks. And so the federal government will be fully involved in the housing business. And we'll have one of our greatest industries socialized through federal fWtding. We are already far down the road toward federal takeover in other areas --farming, transportation, health care, welfare, education, the arts, even the load we eat, throug)l the food stamp acbeme. Federal control goes along with the tun ding. It would take a miracle to reverse the trend. That miracle could be per- formed U voters throughout the land woald tum tbe fed tund aeelcers out of atftce, Tbe right couree to take i.e to elect cudldat.. wbo are . pledged to m iDI our Republ.tc by tunUng down U. led IlDia and eauptng the fed KIM KELL..CXX;, 13, of New- port Beach is a woodcraft winner at the Orange County Fair. Aorida, chose to repeal a fi ve-mo nth-old law guaranteeing certain rights to homosexuals , gays around the country were understandably upset . What is harder to understand is the reaction of liberal heterosexuals. If the lellers to the editor in a recent issue of the New York Times is typical of other re:.~ctions from around the Nation , we're living in ' topsy-turvy world where tht' values that underlie Western Civilizatio n are held in co nt empt . "It is very disquieting,"' wrote Andrew Goodzeit of Tean eck , N.J .. "to learn ... that our 'unalienable righu' can be voted out of existence." Robert Kafes of New York called the Florida referendum "a serious threat to human rights." Just what are these rights? The defeated ord inance guaranteed gays job rights even in private and religious schools. What of the rights of the parents who support those schools? And of the children who attend them? Proponents of the g.a y right to teach maintain that a child "s sexwl identity - whether he is homosexual or heterosexual iS established by the time he is five , and that nothing can change this identity. AJ God blessed the obedi- enct Of Isaac's fathltf , so will He ~ess the obedience of Christian fathers todly. I believe thlt Ab- raham had family devotions, where he, as the f1ther, nsembled with the other nwm· ~~ of his houMhold around God's Word, insof.,. as it h.c2 been revuled to him at that time. Ahf-aham was a believer in the resurrection and reunion with O.ristiln loved ones and friendl. Atoms of elements each consist of a nucleus contamtng protml$ (posilively charged) and m•utmns (no charge). sur· round~d by elumms (negatively charged). The number of protons equals the number of electrons. and the whole is rather like a miniature planetary system. The number of electrons and 1heir arrangemenl govern the reactivity of the el11ment. . Elements can exisl in the fonn of isotopes, characttnzed by th~ same number of prolons and electrons as the parent element but having a different number of neutrons (thus the mass number varies). but the parent and isoiOpe have similar chemical properties. Many isotopes decay, i.e .. they are converted to other elements and in so doing they radi· ale alpha-particles, beta-rays or gamma-rays which can be measured. For any isotope a "decay curve·· can be drawn showing that afler the "half-life " 50% of the isotope has been lost and after a further ~qual time half of I he re· mainder and so on. Examples of "half-lives" of some iso- topes used for radiometric dating are : Tritium 12.3 years: 14Carbon 5,730 years; 40Putassium I .300 mil ,lion years: 238Uranium 4,500 years. A similar erroneous resu lt W~JUid be ubl3ined if the product helium were being measured. Potassium-A '~on method: Similar criticism may be lev· "eled at this method. In it 1he isu1upe 40Potassium changes Into 40Argo n ( l l'i') and 40Cakium (8 ~ ) ... Two pmd- ucts are formed , the minor o ne being 40Argon and the ma· jor one 40Cakium. The so-called "branching ratio"" has not been measured with any certainly and the value used can alter the age value of the mineral concerned by an appreci· able amount. ... The isotope of calcium is not useful to measure as calcium is so common in rocks. 40Argon is al- ways used for age deteno, inalions. Here there are many problems: • The amount of 40Argo n in the earth's atmosphere is 100 t intts too high for it all lo have been produced by radio· active decay of 40Potassium. even if 4,.500 million years art invoked ! Therefore much of this muSI hue been there initially. 111 • 40Argon, like helium, is a gas that is known to diffuse easily from rock$.. depending on the p:orosity of I he wrfact and on the prevailing pressure. Thw rockl deeper in th~ earth's crust where pressure is high will lose 40Argon to rocks nearer to the surface where pressure is lower. Further· mort, 40Argon will be lost i:t different degrees from differ· ent types of minerals. Thus, surface rocks used for age determinllion will h1ve 1 higher 40Argon content th1n would be expected, su~sting great age. • Volcanic rocks have inherited 40Argon fro m the earth"s mcma (molten core) in formuion. This would a&ain sua· gest erroneously great ages fo r those thll h1ve erupted into the ocean .... I'm oot talldng about the cool nights we've been having. This Is much more compllcated. You see, we have a group of ecological experts 1n town who want to p.~t a '•freeze" on building. Why do they want to do this? Because, they say, we need to stop building unW we can take a look at our trat!lc problem. Now, there's one of the biggest laughs yet. These are the same guys wbo have been ruonlog around town for years wltb stop signs in th eir hands, getting ln the way of eYery tratllc project thls city has tried. They stopped University Dr., they fight tbe wtdeoiog of Coast Highway, aod they fight every other traffic solution that comes along. Tbeo, !hey turn right around and say, "We've got to stop building until we get thls tratllc mess cleared up." U.mellevable. What we need ts oot a building freeze, but a traffic lhaw. Somebody has got his thermometer turned upside down. Every few months, some of these yahoos come along aDd say, •• Let's have a tratllc study." They don't really want the trat!ic problems solved; they )1st want to keep studying !be problem so oothlog will be done about it. "We can't build that road until the lratllc study is done," they will tell you, with great mock ln- oocence. Now, we're waiting tor a ••tra.mc model," what the hell ever thatls. Whlle we wait for this trartlc model to come out of tts incubator, we're supposed to freeze everything. Seems I've heard all of this somewhere before. It's the old chicken-and-egg act, warmed over. If you don't let anybody build any roads, tbe roads you've got wtll get more and more crowded, then you can have an e1cuse f<>r oot letting any more homes be built, because they will be occupied by people who drive cars. Besides, it you keep housing scarce, the increased demand wUJ. drive up the value of your own property • It's Ume we started looklog at these people as what they really are: a bunch of selfish CloWIIB. They've got tbelrs, so to hell 'With everybody else. They'll drive on a street past somebody else's house, but tbey, don't want anybody driving past tbelr netclj)orhood. They buy homes In a beach town ln Southern C allfornl.t, and then ezpect the world to go away • I've got news for tbem. Tbe beaches are public and the uplands are for sale • The public Is going to come to the beach, and families are going to keep buying homes Delr the beach to live 111. They're NOT golnc to go away • KQbe we should put all of tbese "moratorium" boobs In a deep free&e aDd DOt thaw tbem out unUI we i».Ye found a care lor aelflabness. AI Fortlt P.S. I )Ill thought of a wollllera.t way to IIDance the old f<>lka' blnro parlor.
