However, wtth the schools
and county taking a much
bigger tax bite than the city,
the actual tax bUl for local
property owners depends
mostly on the tax rates set
by those agencies. The city
usually takes between lOa.nd
15 per cent of the property
taxes paid here.
The Mcinnis formula IS
based on figures whJch he
says are not exact, but city

the couoctlman's rough fi-

• G.1EETINGS TO THE CHIEF
Welcome to our nev. chief of police,
Charles Gross.
Newport Beac h will present a chal-
lenge to the new chief. The !:arbor
and waterways that make our town so
attractive are also the features that
add to police proble ms. But, even so,
we have no criti<:al c rime problems;
the crime rate is below state and na-
tional averages; local folks are gener-
ally cooperative in crime prevention

Here's one simple solution. Keep your mdoor temperature at TK0
instead o f 70° and you could cu t your cooling co sts up to :~0 percent
Air conditioning is supposed to keep you comfortable. not cold
By the way, make sure all your doors and windows are closed
Why pay to air condition the neighborhood?
Again. remember. Indoor temperature 78° or higher
It's another way you can help conservatio n And it will definitely
pay off-next time your meter reader shows up

Tobacco that for the first tirrie

MERIT and MERIT lOO's were
packed with this special tobacco.
And taste-tested among thou-·

If you smoke, you'll be
were tested against a number of higher tar
brands. The results proved conclusively that
'Enriched Flavor' tobacco does
boost taste without the usual
increase in tar.
Overall, smokers reported

MERIT and MERIT 1 oo:s as
much as the taste of the higher ·
tar cigarettes tested .
Cigarettes having up to 60%

In the Word of God there IS
strong emphas•s placed upon
h"iendship. The above is one of
the many passages in the Bible
....tlich deals with it.
I believe God has chosen the
h"iend relationship as a special
part of life, set apart from all
other relationships. I alw believe
it is important to have fr iends,
and that it is God's will that we
do.
We can see the will of God in
friendship through the manv ex-
amples found throughout the
Bible . We look at Jonathan and
David. In 1 Samuel 20:17, Jon·
athan said he lo ved Dav id as his
own soul.
But probably the greatest u -
ample of frie ndship found in the
Bible is that of Christ and His
disciples. In John 13:1, the Bible

SEALED WITH .THE SPIRIT
"In whom ye also trusted.
1fter that ye heard the Word of
truth, the gospel of your salva·
tion: In whom also, after that ye
believed, ye were sealed with that
Holy Spirit of promise" (Ephe-
sians 1:13).
Most Engl ish nanslations of
the Bible make it clear that the
words "a her that," in the above
passage, actually have an imrnedi·
ate result in view. Upon hearing
(or "heeding") we believed, and
upon believing we were sealed
with the Spirit.
What IS perhaps even more
importantlo note, 1s the fac t that
upon believing "the gospel of ...
salvation," we are "sealed WITH "
the "Holy Sp1nt ," not "by " the
Spirit. There is a d1flerence be·
tween the two, which can be
s1 mply il lustrated.
Here is a housew1fe,let us say,
who is "putting up" jam or pre-
serves and seating each jar with
wa x. Now, the jars are being
M:~ed "by" the wom•n. but lhe
is sealing them "with'.' wax. Thus
it is not merely thlt the Holy
Spirit causes believers to be tel led
and made MCure. Rather He Him·
self is the seat thlt kHps us
eternally secure IS God's loving
children. We ere sealed, not "by
the Spirit," but ~ith the Spirit,"
-the Spirit Himself the Seal!
It is wonderful indeed to know
that before the bar of God, the
simplest believer in Christ has
been fully justified (Acts 13:38,
39). But this is a court action, a
matter of record. Buidu this,
the Spirit, who first brought the
sinner under conviction, now
gives him lif•-.ttN~IIiftJ. This is
why Romans 8:"2 tells us that
"the law of the Spirit-(that) of
life in Christ, hath made me free
from the law of sin and death."
Thank God for the Spirit, who
convicts, regenerates and s-eals be-
lievers in Christ!

I went to Switzerland to get away fro m
it all. I knew that runn ing away
would not sol~e anything but it was a
tonic to relax on the shores of Lake
Geneva.
Was I running away from God too?
My C hristian life had ground to a halt ,
and my faith wavered. Did God really
care about me? H e seemed unconcerned
with my problems. and sometimes I
doubted his power to d o anything about
them anyway.
My chotce of resort was excellent .
Water is a wo nderful tranquilizer for a
troubled mind and battered emotiom. I
spent many hours beside the la ke, drink-
ing in the serenity and gaining inspira-
tion from the grandeur of the mountains
on the far s hore. And God was there
too. waiting to re\·eal himself.
One hot afternoon I sat on a small
landing stage and dangled my feet in the
cool water. A light bri!(:Ze played with
my hair, a pair of swans rippled the
water as they glided past, and I felt a t
peace with all the world.
This peace became disturbed by a
senS<' of foreboding, an awareness o f
change. A.n eerie stillness replaced the
whisper of the breeze, and even the
swans altered their behavior. They stood
in the shallows-alert , expectanl.
The light dimmed, the lake t urned
grey-purple, and several holidaymakers
ran for shelter. I looked with apprehen-·
sian at the darkenini: sky but decided to
stay where I was. A. deafening thunder
clap followed a brilliant flash of light·
ning, and the storm broke. Lightning
ran down the mountainside beyond the
lake, thunder roared overhead, but I still
sat on the landing stage, small and in5iJ·
nificant in the drama of the storm.
My spine tingled with awe as a jagaed
fork of lightning zipped across the
water. Torrential rain soaked me in sec-
o nds, but this fantastic display was too
aood to miss.
T1le Jake, previously so calm, whipped
itsdf into a boilina cauldron of fury.
Fascinated, I watched the swans face the
an&JY water, risina proudly on the crest
of the inky waves.
1lle storm abated u suddenly as it be-
aan, and I was $OtT)' that the drama had
played i&xlf out so soon. Ood had

Other Evidence for 1 Young Earth
Dendrochronology: This study of the annual gt•.l'\\ith
rings of trees has been useful in estimating age . Trees fo'-'nd
in the While Mountains of Arizona are rcd.oned to be some
4,000 years old as j udged by a mic to!Kupic study of their
growth rings. Since this method can be used ror both living
and dead wood, it has proved to be a useful check on the
14Carbon method. It is particularly significa nt thai no one
has found stumps of such trees. tven though this spe-cies is
known to be disease and pest-resistant. II is most likely that
these trees represent the nrst generation after the Flood.
Popubtion slalistia: This method gives a measure o f the
lime Iince the Flood. It is assumed th1t the Scriptural re c-
o rd is true and that only eight ~ople survived th1t global
c1tastrophe-Noah. his wife . three: sons and their wives. l11e
world popul1tion is now approximately 2,500 million. This
would be reached in 30 doublings of population in periods
of approximately 17S years each, i.e ., S,250 yean. thus
dating the Flood at •pproximately 3.300 B.C.
Srudia On the Mapelk Fleld of the tarth: The mas-
netic field was studied in 18JS by G•uss and by Lamb In
the 1880a. More recently many musuremenu have been
made 11 different points on. the earth's surface, up to 1970.
'The field is thought lo arise In the molten core , which is
2cm iron and has excellent electrk:al conductivity. Lamb
showed mthemaUc.Uy that the mapetlc field , whk:h
&tdelds the utth from cosmk r1di11ion , would decay ex-
ponentially to a certain percentqe or Us oricinal value In
approximltcly I 00.000 yean throu&fl dissipation of heat to

WELCOME, CHIEF
•
We're gettlog a new pollee chief.
Whee Chief Gross comes to tow~ I'm sure one of the f1rst things he wlll want
is some of my famous advice, So, here it is, free of charge, Chief:
-The nrst thing you'll ootlce when you arrive Is that arriving Is almost Impos-
sible. That's because of our ridiculous traffic situation. But, don't try to do any-
