* CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS
Hold on to your hats --and your
purses! The year of the politician is
at hand.
Already there is a stirring of candi-
dates in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa
for the coming City Council elections.
You can expect a lot of stern state-
ments fo r local control and economy
in government --and also promises
for promoting pet projects for the home
,folks.
It is interesting to note Lu cille Kuehn's
apparent basic c once r n on armouncing
her candidacy for re-election to the
Newpor t Council in District 6. "How
Ions c an we afford to live in Newport
ileach?" she wonders. The political
~w ssage intended to be thus conveyed
seems to be a desire for easing property
tax burdens and cutting building coets.
But her performance while on the Coun-
cil d<>es not back up \his aoble objective.
She has readily gone along with the
majority on local spending projects,
especially clamorl'lg for m or e of that
inflation-feeding iederal funding.
The sam e goes for Trudi Rogers,
in District I, also seekin g r e -election.
She listed som e safe iss ues in her
announ cement of candida cy --highway
bridge, airport noise and bay pollution.
But she has to take her lumps along
with the rest of the Council in her
unconcern for spending and her go-
along r ecord on inviting more federal
interfer enc e.
Opposing these 2 incumbents are --
so far --P eter Van Schultze in District
6 and Don strauss in District 1. Neither
of the s e 2 gentlemen has come out with
definite issues, except that Mr. strauss
does class himself as an economic con-
servative. We shall see.
In Costa Mesa, 1 expect the candi-
dates to be voicing the thoughts ex-
pressed by the city manageJ>;_Fred Sor-
sabaL In his recent speech to the Mesa
Chamber, he voiced concern that govern-
ment agencies are taki"g away local
control, and that the state and Washington
want to interfere in local affairs. This

THE IMMIGRANTS
U you want to really get a good argument started down at the neighborhood
drunlcatorlum, start talking' about Immigration. It's a subject that gets people
almost as llillaled as the Panama Canal.
Now, over In the Mld-Eut, one bunch of folks has Immigrated Into Palestloe,
and named It Israel. The other folks are pretty upset aboul this. The result Is what
we call war • bot, cold and Intermittent.
In Rbodesla and South Africa, some while guys Immigrated quite a lew years
ago and started treallnc tbo blacks the way we treat the Indians. Pushed 'om out
onto r esemotlons and took the best land lor themselves. Now, tho black folks want
the white lolita to leave. War again.
Up In Sacramento, we've got a black guy and a whlto guy In charge of the state
government, and they keep lry!Di to get tho Japanese to Immigrate htre with a car
factory. Setms Ute only yesterday we were putting Japanese Immigrants In con-
centration camps. Hell, we treated them even worse than we did lhe Indians.
Meall'ofbUe, the Mellcans keep comllli across the border In droves, and we've
found out that we have to put them on welfare as soon as they get here. Try goltli
down to Mellco and rottinl welfare. SIJicks, they won't even allow gringos to own
property down there. That's bow much they nnt us.
Wo even have to print our tallots In foreign languages, so nobody can accuse
us of belllg pro)ullced or 11111-lmmlgratlon.
So what sbould we do about all this? Well, first of all, we should get oul of the
Mid-East. We are always becldng losers. This time, let's )lsi sell guns to both
sides, let 'em shoot It out, and then tate sides with the winner.
Looks Ultt old Jimmy Carter Is )1st going to got himself in deep trouble by trying
to straddle tho Mid-East IIIICe, I bear Illata lot of campaign fUnds lor the Democrals
hue suddenly dried up. Wbat be sbould do Is bop completely oil of the fence and got

Introduction
In the 18th century the rise of
ratione I Ism encouraged the literary
analysis of Biblical texts known ••
"Higher Criticism.·· Without
corroborative evidence for the Biblical
traditio ns many scholars adopted a
highly skeptical attitude toward their
hi storicity.
But countering this skeptical
tendency has been the development of
archaeology. Napoleon's Invasion of
Egypt In 1798 brought Its antiquities to
the ettention of Europe. In 1842 Botte
conducted the first excevetion In
Mesopotemie . Schliemann fulfilled his
life.Jong ambition by digging et Troy in
1870. The first excevetlon In Palestine
was unc;tertaken by Petrie In 1890.
Meny of thes e eerly expeditions were
little more then treasure hunts for
objec ts o f art to be displayed in
museums. Broken pieces of pottery
were casually tossed aside as without
velue. Petrie, who had worked irl
Egypt before going to Pales tine, was
the first to recognize that these
potsherds could be used for dating the
strete.
In case aher cese excavatiOns have
provided support to Biblical traditions
o nce considered dubious. The de~10 of
American Biblicelerchaeologists, W.
F. Albright, remarked: .. Durin9these
15 )'ears (between World Wars) my
in itially rether skeptical attitude
towe rd the accuracy ofJsraelite
historic al tradition hed suffered
repeeted jolts as discovery after
discovery confirmed the historicity of
details which might reasonably have
been considered Jegendery. ·· 1
The same conversion from a
skeptical attitude to a hig h regard for
New Testament traditions is seen in the
career of the outstanding archaeologist
of Roman Asia Minor (Turkey), Sir
William Ramsay .
Abraham
Early in the 20th century scholars
had dismissed the patriarchel figures
of Abrah.am, Isaac and Jacob as
•--~ · penonlflci!ltlons of tribes or
transformed gods. But texts from such
sites in Syrla·Mes9J)Otamia as MarL
Nuzi and Alalakh have shown that the
,.
names and cus toms found in the
patriarchal narratives are authentic.
An exciting dev.elopment has been
the work of Italian a rchaeologists at
ancient Ebla in Syria. where some
15.000 cuneiform texts have recently
been recovered. Preliminary analysis
reveals the presence o f Biblical place
names in texts from the si te whic h
flourished shortly before the time of
Abraham.
Joseph
Although the Egyptian royal texts
are understandably silent about the
presence of the Hebrews in Egypt or
their Exodus , which would have been a
great embarrassment. documents
indirectly illuminate the stories of
Joseph a nd Moses. We know from the
Wilbour Papyrus that Semitic slaves
li ke Joseph were sold into Egypt.
Reliefs depict Palestinian bedouins
coming to Egypt for food in times of
famine . The Merneptah stele mentions
the presence of the Israelites In the
land of Palestine in 1220 B.C .,
Indicating that the Exodus must have
taken place before that date .
Joshua
Excavations reveal a number of
Canaanite sites, such as H.nor (Joshua
1 I : I · t 3), which have been destroyed
by violence-no doubt during Joshua's
campaigns. Cruder Israelite
settlements replaced the Canaanite
structures at sites like Bethel.
Judges
The period of the Judges was chaot ic
during whi ch every man did that whic h
was right in his own eyes. The
archaeological evidence of random
destructions during this period
correlates with this tradition. The plan
of the Philistine temple with its two
pillars destroyed by Samson (Judges
16o25 fl.) had been lllustroted by tho
recent discovery of e Philistine temple
on the outskirts of Tel Aviv .
S.ul
The simple capite! of Saul at Tell
ei·FOI \ancient Oibeeh) just north of
Jerusa em was excavated by Albright.
Among the objects found was an iron
plow point. The Philistines, whom Saul
fought, had been eble to maintain their
superiority because they hed at nrst
monopolized the manufacture of Iron
(I S.muel 13o 19-22).

provided us with exact literary parallels
to the Psalms . As Ugarit was destroyed
in 1200 B.C., these parallels support
an early date for the Psalm s.
Solomon
Solomon was a prodigious builder.
Unfortunately nothing remains of his
activities at Jerusalem, but three
identical gates built by Solo mon have
been found at Hazar. Megiddo Gezer (1
Kings9:J5).
Ahab and Jezebel
A hob (869-850 B.C.), king of the
northern kingdom of Israel, married
the notorious Jezebel, a Phoenician
princess. whic h explains the presence
o f Phoenician masonry at Samaria.
Ahab's "'i~ory house·· ( 1 Kings 22:39)
has been Illustrated by the many pieces
of ivory found et Samaria from the
ninth· century level.
Rehoboem
In the reign of Solomon's son .
Rehoboam. the Egyptian Phart~oh
S hi shak invaded Palestine (I Kings
14:25·26). This attack is described in
Egyptilln texts and has been confirmed
by an inscription of S hishak found at
Megiddo.
Jehu
King Jehu of Israel (842·815 B.C.)
had to submit to the powerful Assyrian
Empire. The Black Obelisk of
S halmaneser Ill of Assyria records the
tribute of Jehu and depicts a kneeling
figure who mey possibly represent
Jehu himself.
Ahoz
The great Assyrien king, Tiglath·
pileser Ill (also known as Pul), was
invited by Ahaz, king o f Judah, to aid
him against Pekah of Israel and Rezin
of Damascus (2 Kings 16: 1·6 ; Isaiah
7). The Assyrians destroyed Damascus
in 732 B. C. and also took Hazar (2
Kings 15:29). Tiglath·pileser boasted.
"Pekah their king they deposed and
Hoshea I set over them" (cf. 2 Kings
15:30 ff.). In the burnt remains of
Hazar was found 8 wine jar inscribed
"for Pekah."
The Assyrians
Assyrian documents now indicate
that the Bible is correct In c rediting
S halmaneser V, rather than his
successor Sargon II . with the c apture
of Sameria in 722 B.C. (2 Kings
17 :3-6).1n 7 12Sargon's forces
a ttacked Ashdod on the c<HJst (lsaieh
20: I ). In 1963t~rchaeol ogists found
fragments of an Assyrian stele
commemorating Sargon's victory at
Ashdod .
The Assyrian king Sennac herib
besieged Jerusalem in 701 B.C.
According to 2 Kings 18 · t 9 and ISllia h
36·31. the Assyrians were unable to
take Jerusalem. This is indirectly
confirmed by Sennacherlb"s annals
which boast of the extraction of tribute
but not of the capture of Jeruse~. -
Sennacherib did capture the great city
of L&chish. Excavations have

Nebuc:hednuur
Important texts of the seventh and
sixth centuries B.C. called the
Chaldean Chronicles were published by
D. J . Wiseman in 1956. Therprovlde
an explanation for Daniel 1: -..hlch
speaks of an otherwise unattested
attack on Jerusalem In
Nebuchadnezzar's first year. They also
reveel a hitherto unknown victory of
the Egyptians over the Babylonians In
601 , which may explain why Judah
ceased to pay tribute to Babylon (2
Kings 24: I) and turned to Egypt in
spite of the advice of Jeremiah
(Jeremiah 37o6 II.).
At the turn of the 20th century
Professor C . C. TorreyofYalesought
to discredit the Biblical accounts of the
Babylonian attack and the subsequent
Exile of the Jews. Excavations have
amply confirmed the widespread
devastation wrought by
Nebuchadneuar's attacks.
