Memorial Day '85:
Vietnam vs. WWII
I
Th.it year we mark the 40th annivenary of the end of !
World War II and the 10th anniveraary of the fall of
South Viet Nam. It bring• into clearer fOCUI the end of two '
wan in one of which we celebrated a great victory after !
our troo1>9 returned home to a grateful nation, and a H ·
oond in which our 10ldiera were not honored nor wa1 the
nation celebrating. All we aaked of Vietnam wcu that it go
away and that our boy1 atop dying in a war where our 1 goal.I were unobtainable and victory wa1 an elusive '
I dream. '
It ha1 been 1aid that no nation can achieve greatneu 1
until it ha1 loet a war. While the United State• had long I
lince withdrawn combat 10ldier1 from Vietnam when it 1
fell, we left behind many 1hattered American live1. j
During the laat 10 yeara we have grown to a greater ap-i
preciation of our 1eldier1 who aerved and died in Vietnam 'I
and th<>M who never returned. They are no lea heroe1
than every other American 1oldier who 109t hi.a life in a
far-away land in defenM of our freedom. They taught u1
1.-ona about war we are 1till gra1ping and underatan-
cling. We are grateful for the monument in Wa1hington,
D.C. for the Vietnam Vet and we are pleaMd to Me
California build a monument to honor thOM who died in '
Vietnam.
I
Locally, however, we nHd to remember thoM Newport
Harbor area boyt, many of whom had jUlt graduated from
1 our local high 10hooll, who died or were wounded in Viet· :
nmn.
We nHd to tell them we have not forgotten them or
