G,.g Carroll le talldng about the changea
that many I~ rock bands experience.
Tonight. after the room ls empty and quiet. M1
get the chance to demonetate, ftrst tMlnd.
For the laat ftve-plua yeara, 'Carroll hu run
"Katz 'N Jammera," one of Oreoge County'•
most popular band•. Ourtng that period, he has
been the only conatant Jn an otherwtl9 .. of
change. Band members have C<>m4t and gone,
but Carroll h• atay9d.
And after the dancers are gone and the lightl
are dim. the 34-yeer-okl band leader wtll have
the unenvtabte talk of Informing h• IMd and
bass guitar players that their MrVtcea are no
longer required. In other words, he's going to
can them.
"Remember what I wu saying before. about
the continual changes that are atweya taking
p&ece," Carroll aekt, hla face .amewnat ex-
presstonleea. HFor ua. it I• time tor a change.
There Isn't a band around that hasn't gone
through slmllar changee.
"Our sJx-member band just lan't aa tight. as
coh•lve. as I would llke," he continued. "Now.
the four of us that ere left wtll have almllar
visions. of what we want the band to do, and
become."
"Katz 'N Jammers" has already dlsptayed a
new wrinkle or two of late. most notably the ad-
dition of lead singer Cathy Brandolino, 2.-. the
group's first femaJe vocalist. 1rs all part of a
push by Carroll and Company to achteve un-
questioned status as the best top "40 band In
the county.

Brandolino. meanwhile, is actually an aspir-
ing artist who was attending Orange Coast
College three months ago wtten she met
Carr<>'I. who decided that she could become a
valuable asset to the band.
It is Carroll. a blonde. weft-built performer.

It's inevttabfy a tender moment. as the

There 1s. Indeed, a 1he CUrtain CaJI Dinner

p roduction of '"Ohett," 9Ctieduled to run
through October V . OfMtr opens the 90ng
solo, but 1ust as the notes begtn to reach the
1mposs1 ble stage, he receives backing vocal
help from several o1her children.
Thus. the background vocals compMQty
overpower young Oliver's best efforts, and he i9
left to croak pretty much to himseff. Meahwhlle,
seven or eight voices give the song a ftghtlng
chance to succeed.
Aside from "Where Is Love," though, there
aren't too many areas for improvement In
Oliver!; after all, any ptay wtth euch an In-
triguing storyline and Incredible 80f'O Mlection
is bound to be pretty good. even if It is staged in
Siberia.
The cast for the Curtain Cal's version isn't
overpowenng, but 1s certainty acceptable. Pip-
pa Winslow as Nancy is exceflent, dlsp&aying a
rrch. full vOtCe. especially on "As Long s He
Needs Me ..
Fagin. played by Jett Newman. also detivers
a strong performance, and when he sJngs "Pick
a Pocket.· he seems very convincing, as he
dances and prances about on stage. And
Stephen Sm ith makes a pretty decent Artful
Dodger. although he doesn't seem to be quite
the scam artist that a good Dodger should be.
Joe Collins assumes the rotes of both Mr
Bumble and Mr Brownlow. which is very In-
congruous; after all, Bumble Is a bad guy,

Brownlow ts a good guy. Collins does a better
job with Brownlow than Bumble, who just
doesn't display his sinister side good enough.
Even so. "Oltverl" has enough welt-known
songs to fill an album: "Consider 'Yourself,"
"Food Glorious Food," "Pick a Pocket." and "I'd
Do Anything" have long been Broadway
favorites. And the Curtain C&JI cast deffven
each of theee songs in a prof~ional manner.
One other twist incorporated by the Curtain
Call comes when Oliver, as an adult, narrates
parts of the story over a speaker to the
audience. No major Insights, thOugh, are

Newport Mandarin Offers
Flaming Fortu-ne, And Confrey Phillips
A flaming fortune cookie is the culmination,
but by no means the highlight. of an evening of
dining at the Newport Mandarin restaurant in
Newport Beach.
For while quality Chinese cuisine seems to
be in abundance in Orange County, It is New-
port Mandarin that combines It with a variety of
spices and seasoning to produce a unique din-
ing experience.
The menu includes several spicy items with a
flavor all their own. Most people, for Instance.
have tasted shrimp at one time or another. But
Newport Mandarin prepares it In a way that you
haven't experienced before -for example, hot
spiced shrimp szechuan ($8. 75) features large.
juicy shrimp, sauteed In a hot, spicy sauce that
excites the taste buds.
But then. so too do most of the other Items
on the menu. ranging from the appetizers to the
full-course meals. Egg rolls ($4). fried shrimp
($4) and barbecued spare ribs ($6.50) are all
very tasty. as are the fried won ton's ($4).
If there 1s one absolute must-try dish served
at Newport Mandarin. thoug,..,.. it has to be the
walnut beef. priced at just $9.95. Thick pieces
of beef are served In a walnut glaze that Is
sweet and very tasty. Served on a bed of rice.
it's a treat that you're not likely to experience
elsewhere.
Half of a smoked duck ($8.75) is another
popular entree at Newport Mandarin. served
with bread. The duck is cooked to perfection.
and highlights an extremely popular Chinese
dish.
Other noteworthy items on the menu at New-
port Mandarin Include sweet and sour pork
($6.50). diced chicken with almond sauce
($6.50), breaded chicken with broccoli ($7.25),
sizzling beef with scallop ($10.95), beef with hot
pepper sauce ($9.95). and shrimp with lobster
sauce. priced at just $8.75.
In addition. chef Kam Chow also prepares a
most delightful shrimp toast ($4).
One person who Is sold on the cuisine at
Newport Mandarin 1s pianist Confrey Phillips. a
talented performer who has played to
audiences worldwide. An admittedly biased
judge. since he performs the nightly entertain-
ment for the restaurant. he is nonetheless a
qualified one, for he has tested fine cuisine the
world over.
"I generally prefer the hot, spicy foods on
most nights." he said. "but the Mandarin
(sweet) food la lovely, too. It depends on the
mood you are In."
500 Artists To Perform
Some 500 musicians will perform a variety of
music ranging from Big Bend to rock 'n roll, as the
Orange County Musicians' club presents Its 15th

port Beach.

Twai~s Down Under Switches To Dancing, Hits Home Run
Outside, frustrated drivers continue to orbit
around the large parking lot like satellites, look-
ing for an empty parking space, while those
who have already found one cram their way In-
side.
Bright lights. music, and two separate
lounges await them. Saturday night at Twains
Down Under in Santa Ana has begun, and an
estimated 500 people, maybe more. have
decided to include Twains on their evening's
itinerary.
Most everyone has chosen to pack
themselves into .. Aussie Rage.'' the lounge that
features a DJ and top-40's music and dancing.
As a result. the hve band. "Carme," performing
1n the ad1oin1ng "Koala Kapers" room. finds
itself with a substantially smaller audience.
In fact. there almost is elbow room.
Don't get the impression. though, that
Tw ains Down Under is the normal. run--0f-the-
m1ll. Newport Beach-style nightclub. For
starters. 1t didn't even start out to become one.
Rather. 1t opened a little over a year ago as a
restaurant. with an Australian theme. Earlier
this year. 1t dumped the restaurant. but kept the
theme Now. you can dance to Bruce Springs-
tean. standing ne>Ct to a wall portrait of Helen
Reddy. Mel Gibson. or other Australian stars.
The menu features mainly high-quality
munch1e food now. suc h as peel-and-eat
shrimp. potato skins. ribs. sandwiches. and
General Manager Ron Booth's personal-recipe
chill (tasty') Not the award-winning cu1s1ne
originally intended tor Twains Down Under. but
definitely superior to that ottered at most
nightclubs
Still. the emphasis IS placed on dancing and
drrnk1ng. the two staples that have m ade the
c lub/lounge business 1n Orange County so at-
tractive Or as Booth said m e>Cpla1ntng the
change from restaurant to club "You don't
make as much money with food.··
As a nightclub. Twains Down Under certainly
has everything a successful one needs: plenty
of lights. videos. two generous-sized dance
floors, and even quiet areas. for simpk conver-
sation.
There's even a video camera In operation, JO
dancers can see themselves on one of the
manya big screen TV's. The camer. HfVeS
