'tMIT,_.
The Newport Beach City Council
reelected the mayor and approved a
plan ullowing for construction of a con-
troversiul senior citizen's living facility
tit the council meeting Dec. 9.
The council voted S-to-2 to reject a
planning commission recommendation
and approved the redistricting plan
necessary to allow for the 77-unit rental
senior living facility to be built at 3901
East Coast Highway.
At a public debate immediately prior
to the vote. 15 speakers argued the
merits and problems of the proposed
facilit y. with the issue of residential
r><trking arising as the most hotly
debated item.
"There·s not a better use on this si te
that could generate less traffic," argued
D•1vid Neish of Urban Assist, who
represented the builders. Neish told the
council his underground parking plans
would avoid bothering the neighbors,
and greatly lessen the parking problems
caused by the many restaurants that
have existed on the location.
.. This will be for seniors who arc ac-
tive und in good health: it won't ~ a
conv;al~nt hospital." he said. 0 1t'll

hotel.··
"11'11 not keeping with the en-
viron menta l i n tegrity of the
neightborhood," said Wally Zipar.
"It will cause massive parking problems
on Poppy <tnd Hazel."

reelected Phil Maurer and Ruthdyn
Plummer mayor and mayor pro tern,

spirits.
"If you had to be a mayor," he said,
"Newport Beach is the best place in the
world."
He will e-.un $287.79 per month.

Everyone seems to rem~mber

Our dnughter Lauren's

baby c hicks hatch in their

of their shells; balls of soft,

Oddly enough, a week or so
later, Lauren brought home a
note from school saying we
could have one of the chicks if
we wanted. The vote of our fami-

To our surprise, the chick could
barely get her big toe in the box.

Lauren was cager to show the

the intelligence of our hen.
Lauren told Amy to "stay"
while s he walked away about ten
steps from the pet. Then she
commanded Amy to run and
jump into her lap. The trick had
to be performed quickty, as Amy
got impatient when it came to

The neighbor was impressed, I

Naturally. we had to set up

Lauren was the mother and

Well. t-111abeth Howard's
Curt.1in Call Dinner Theatre has
taken on the job and has done
rather well hy it.
One real drawback is Michael
Fry m 's per formance as
Professor Higgins. For some
stra nge reason. Frym loses
almost a ll of t he s tuffy
arrogance and pomposity of the
role. He injects it with a kind of
nonchalance that robs the part
of it'> dimensions and its basic
charactcri -.tics. He seems to pale
in ;1 role that should be a joy for
an) actor. He docs, however,
have a few moments when he has
more than a nodding acquain-
tance with the part.

The first in our series of

py in Corona dcl Mar - a tree
lined street that initiates the
natural setting so evident once
the home is entered.
"The home is on the single
family residence side of the
street -facing a canyon. The
patio and back side of the home
opens onto the canyon and you
can wa tch the animals scamper
<tround: it's a common site to see
the deer grazing at the bottom o f
the canyon," said listing agent
C hris Hopper, owner of Corona
del Mar Properties and Crown
Realty and Investments.
The home is 3 blocks from the
tlcac h: it is c;urrounded by owner
occupied homes that a re ar-
tistically picturesque and custom

sl reel is 1oned R I.
A brick and cement driveway

home's s pacious two-story en-

mal djning room which has a
'olid oak railing.
The living room is large: it has
a two-story raised ceilding and

is created by the canyon and sur-

Hopper
There is a feeling o f
spaciousnes'i in the home that is
created by raised ceilings in
every room. The home has solid
