BadhaDl'S huge victory
taint~ by bad hit-piece
When Nathan Rosenberg, then president of the
Orange County Y ouna Republicam, decided to run
against Rep. Robert Badham, the Congressman scoffed
-at him, saying he bad seen Rosenbera's kind before.
When Rosenberg hosted hordes of volunteers, boasted
about prominent endorsements, and started raising
money at an even clip with Badbam, the ·incumbent ;
talked of his support in the community and how,
come election day, he'd have the last laugh.
Election day has come and gone, and Bob Badham
is still chuckling. The 65-to-34 percent victory over
Rosenberg was more than almost everyone predicted.
That is, everyone except Badham. He says he thougllt
it might have been even two or three points greater.
The race was quite heated and often bitter. Most
of the mud slung from the two camps had little or
nothing to do with any issues; i_t was largely what
one might expect in a political scrimmage of thetoric.
But a -last minue mailer from Badham 's camp was
a bit different. Rosenberg served in the Navy in the
late 1970s, and was assigned to the Department of
Defense. For that involuntary assignment, Badham
fingered him as being an operative of -the Carter
Administration. He also handed Rosenberg the blame
for the Iranian hostage crisis, the Panama Canal
controversy, and an alleged plan to give the Soviet
Union military superiority. Furthermore, the high
interest rates and inflation of the late 70s were also
said to be Republican Rosenberg's fault. Badham 's
piece goes on to compare est, the self-help experience
founded by Rosenberg's brother, with Johnestown.

Father of Year gives time freely
BY PEGGY DARNELL
04Coogratulatiom, you 're the
Newport Ensign's Father of the
Year."
This announcement was ninc-
ycar-old Brian Hafer's way of
letting his father, Ruaell Hafer,
know be had been telccted as
the winner of the Newport En-
sign's F atbcr of the Year conrest.
Brian's winning essay tells of
bis special relationship with
his dad amt its importance to
him. Brian's eyes smile a lot,
and there is good reason. He
enjoys giving-something he
shares with his dad and with
us this Father's Day.
Russell Hafer says the time
be spends with bis f amity is
of the utmost importanoe to
bi~ and be enjoys it tremend-
ously. They spend a lot of time
camping out, with one of the
more memorable trips traveling
in Europe, especially in Auatria.
He also enjoys gardening. The
family moved to Newport Beach
more than five years ago, where
Russell is close to bis profession
at Hoag Memorial Hospital as
a radiation therapist in the On-
cology Department~
His early years were spent
in Pomona. He attended colJeF
at UC Santa Barbara, then went
on to medical sc.bool and rca-
idcncy trainiq at UCLA. Diane,
Brian's mother, is a substitute
teacher and his sister, Laure~
is in the fint grade at Andenen
Elementary School.
Writing is just one of Brian's
many intercsu. He also enjoys
the games his dad organizes
in the neighborhood, computen
and spareribl. He hopes to be
a junior lifeguard this summer
in Newport Beach and sings
in a poup called "Celebration,"
which recently won a 1ingin1
competiton at Youth Expo and
will entertain at the Oranae
County Fair in July.
When Brian wu asked Hout
bit future plans, he said be would
like to be a doctor like bis dad
and an architect in bit spare
at Carbo •1 in Newport. Beach,
two tickets to South Coast Rep-
ertory the~. a ahirt from the
Storekeeper in Westcliff Plaza,
and a membership at Video
W arebomc in Westcliff Plau.
Brian's win.ain& ellaJ:
Why my dad should be Fa-

My dad should be Father of
the Year because be not only
helps me and my family but
other people too. As a doctor

with my friends and orpniza
activities for us.
Even though my dad works
hard be still finds houn to be
with me. On Sundays we play
tellllis, and on Saturdays we
play baseball or take bike rides.
Sometimes we NW water fapta
on bot days. My favorite times
with him are when we go to
brcakf ut or dinner or when we
have camp-outa.
Buildina ii one of our favor-
ite activities. We build airplane
models, Lego, and model
rockets. One day be took me to
a plumbina store and bought
me a bunch of pipes and we
built a fountain that shot water
in all d.irectiona.
My dad is a good sport and
teaches me to be one by tbe
way be acts. At my bueball
games, if the referee mafu:t a

The Location
The home is nestled in trees
above the ocean with views of
the rocky cliffs and sandy
beaches of Corona del Mar,
the 'harbor entrance and Cat-
alina off in the distance; path-
ways lead guests around the
gardens, a lagoon-like clippin1
pool and smooth lawn that sub-
tly disguises a practice putting
green. One pathway leads down
to a private studio room with
its own patio and sitting area.
These overlook the ever-present
ocean views that give this home
a quality of its own.
"Thia home presents a rare
setting in Newport. Its arounda
are situated on one of the largest

though the home ii Iarae, there
ii still room for expansion. It
