Election day precinct workers don't have an euy
job.
The fruits of their labor are f ew-$3S for a 14-
plus-hour day, and the knowledge that they perform
a vital role in sustaining our democratic process .•
They receive very little public attention for their
work, except on the rare occasiom that 1omethin1
goes wroq.
Something's gone very wrong here in the ~b Con-
gressional District.
One week after Democratic write-in candidate Bruce
Sumner emerged as the winner over Art Hoffmann,
a Lyndon LaRouche follower, Hoffmann took the
lead when several hundred supposed Sumner tallies
were ruled ineligible.
Then the stories started to filter out about the
"alleged irregularities.,.
Some voters said they were told by precinct workers
that they couldn' write in Sumner. Some precinct
workers reported they had been given erroneous in-
formation, allegedly from the Registrar of Voter's
office. There wasn' a groundswell of complaints;
but there were enough to think that chances are great
they had a profound effect on this close election.
Registrar of Voters Al Olson has defended his
troops, saying the trouble was isolated to only a
few incidents, that his office was trackiq down the
problems, and that those who made miatakes have
learned from their errors.
He's right on all counts, but that dOCJD't excuse
1 what happened. Precinct workers, hard working,
underpaid, and unrecognized as they arc, bold a
sacred public trust when they open up shop every
election season. It wasn't a small clerical error that
was made, and it can't be easily corrected. And it
wasn't a fundraiser or a bake sale that was affected-
it was a democratic election, the cornerstone of our
whole American way of life.
The errors of ignorance and incompetence by the
precinct workers and/ or registrar's office cannot
be overlooked. Perhaps the entire system of how
we train the workers-and how little they are paid-
should be overhauled.

Bavarian ethnic a new

Let's be bonat. The lut con-

term "ethnic food" included
several varieties of Oriental,
Southern Italian, and areena
and chitterlinp. 1be lilt may
have been longer, I don't re-

Wh9t :r do remember is that
it didn't include German, A~
trian or Bavarian cuisine. Those
European areas seem to have
acquired an unearned reputation
for serving heavy food which
is fit to be eaten with beer only
during the month of October.
While I'm not much of a cru-

me to say tbae cuisines do have
a place in modern food trends
and if seeing (or tasting) is be-
lievi ng, readers have only to

from Italian daipen are com-
ina in loud and clear-they are
relyina on simplicity, combined
with comfort. They have worked
hard to mate sure that everyone
will shine this season by creating
some delightful, refreahina looka
in aun-dresaing.
Italian designers have always
been big on expression and that
is what they are asking ua to
do this time-communicate! No
time of the year is better to
tell the world how good you
feel than right now-summer.
Begin articulating your mood
with white trouaers or any basic
walking shorts. Then match it
up with a smarter look and cool-
er feel with an oversized roomy
shirt. Take advantage of the
large siz.e shirts offered this sea-
son by adding the same shoulder
pads that carried you through
the winter months.
It would be a waste not to
complete the look by making
use of all the smart summer
accessories available-try a
playful hat, a knotted canvas
belt and complete your go-
anywhere summer style with
smart summer shoes: try spec-
tator loafers for a polished, yet
comfortable, look, or espad-
rilles, flat to ensure comfort,
and purchase canvu for cool-
nesa.
Whoever said comfortable
had no style neglected to inform
the Italians. Well-known de-
signers like Gianf ranco Ferre
and Malgari arc ahowing com-
fortable dresses in knits, cotton,
linen and, yes, even silk. All
