Summer '86 loob lite it may be a near-record season
for our tourist industry, with the current hysteria about
traveling ~, which could also mean a summer full
of traffic headaches for Newporten.
There will be fireworks in the air over the city on
July 4, thanks to a recent city council decision. What
isn't yet known is what kind of fireworks we can expect
on the ground-whether hordes of teen-agen will
descend upon Newport, and bow the officers of new
Police Chief Arb Campbell will act and react to them
if they do.
On the city council agenda, the Irvine Company's
battle to develop the remaining undeveloped portions
of Newport Center is in full swing and looks somewhat
promising at this early juncture, what with organized
opposition being so late in arriving.
Four council seats will be up for grabs in the fall,
with the sixth district in Corona del Mar being vacated
by Bill Agee expected to draw the hottest competition.
Congressman Bob Badham bad no trouble fending
off a well-financed bid by Nathan Rosenber& on June
3, and will face the eventual winner of the Bruce Sumner-
Art Hoffmann Democratic race, pending recounts and/
or court chalkngea. While Sumner, like Rosenberg,
shoukl force Badham to campaign, a race apimt
Lyndon LaRouche-supporter Hoffmann should be a
walk in the park. Peace and Freedom standard bearer
Steve Sean is also a candidate for the seat.
Assemblyman Gil Ferguson is also expected to waltz
to re-election; he is facing token opposition from Geoff
Gray of Corona del Mar, who this time out pneroualy
volunteered to be the Democrat '1 ucrifici.al lamb.
And around the local yacht clubl the talk frequently
turns to the efforts to n:capture the America's Cup, and
the preparation for that autumn battle.
For better or for worse, it loots to be another long,
hot, busy, but never dull summer in Newport Beach.

to the ll'OUf'd, and looks up just in time to see
a ten-pound sword cascade down towards his
head, as the spectators roar their approval at
his demise
No, these are not the early &ladiators of

Cheriton Heston movie. Rather, this action
occurs eech evenine in Buena Park. complete
with horseback ridiRI and joustifw matches,
as pert of 0...,. County's latest attraction.
: Jrs called Mediewll Times. and features
ni&htly matches pitting knights of honor
against each other in a 900-seat arena
bedecked with artifacts from the Renaissance
era. The orpnizers of this program do an
outstanding job of taking guests back to the
11th century recreating a Medieval banquet
and tournament in a European-style castle.
To say that nary a detail has been spared
would be an understatement. Historical
documents and equipment are displayed
prominently in the Hall of Arms, includina
armor. •eapons and an authentic deed with
the signature and seal of Pope Alexander Ill.
And when the hearty four-course feast is
~to the hUf111Y customers. it is presented
on pewter-like plates, without siherware. by
wenches dressed to fit the role.. Utensils had
not been invented in the 11th Century, it is
patiently explained, so the fineers are used to
devour the chicken, ribs and other portions.
But it is the show itself that makes this
attraction something special. Some of the
eve11ts. such as the horseback riding. flag toss,
javelin throwing and ring piercina, are real
competitions, and each kni&ht on horseback
races across the arena at full speed to display
his skill.
The fight scenes, needless to say, are
chorfqpaphed, and the combatants spend
several hours each day practicin1 their
l110We5-much like in a Hollywood movie. Cut.
jab, step and tea block are the kinds of motions
used, while the knilht swings a heavy sword,
ball end chain, or shield.
And though the fi&hts are "fake." the danger
is still very real, as Crail Romero can testify.
He answered a want ad in a newspaper three
years --. and became one of the top knights
at the only other Medieval Times in America,
in Kissimmee, Fla. CUts and bruises. obviously,
are part of his busiMSS. but he's also broken
his nose, thumb and toes on several occasions.
"One time I broke my thumb, but the
adrenaline was IQins so sbCWW I didn, even
know it," Romero recalled. "Most of the injuries
we (the knilhb) suffer occur durilll the show,
rather ttml practice. The people in the stands
usually think it is part of the .ct."
One of the more difficult flaht scenes come
when the knilhl. while on the pound, looks
up to see the ball and chain swunc 8l him.
He must stick his sword up at the last minute
and intercept the chain, which wraps around
July 1986

his dager with explosive power.
-swineina the ball and chain is definitely the
side to be on," Romero laUlhed. urhe receiving
end is a pain. If either of you is off by even
just a few inches, you~ had it."
Even so, Romero, 27, says that the most
dangerous acts come during the jousting
tournament, when the knights speed toward
one another on horseback with lances arrayed,
trying to knock each other off their trusty
mounts..
Besides requiring skilled horsemanship, this
event also requires the rider to know how to
fall off a speeding horse. And then, as Romero
aptly points out, there are the intangibles, too.
11All of the other games involve two thinking
people. he said. 11But the joust not only involves
two thinking people, but two non-thinking
beasts. as well. You never know just how the
horse will react
"People always laugh when I say this, but
these fiaht scenes are a lot like dancing with
someone-you need a 1ood partner," he
continued. "I aet scared when I have to bring
along someone new. because I usually aet the
new knilhts in the show. You can practice for
six months, but when you aet in the show, you
newt!' know how they will reect. ..
Part of the atbaction of beina a knilht is the
opportunity todisp18y skifl in front of a cheerina
audience. The m is dhided 1nlo several
color-coded IJQUPS. eech color corresponding
to a knfel rtt and the customers are instructed
to cheer boistarQusly for their chosen warrior.
The fanfare &nc...aes when each kniaht wins
an ewnt.. He's aMrt a ftower by the Count of
Oranie County Entettainer
Perelada and his Countess, who preside over
the tournament, and he then presents it to the
damsel of his choice in his section.
"A lot of the guys who are singl_e have quite
a good time," Romero, who is married, said
with a smile.
Though the audience gets enthusiastically
behind each knight, problems rarely occur.
Mostly, the crowd limits itself to cheers or boos, ,
although Romero says a drunken man in
Florida started tossing plates into the area one
evening.
Medieval Times is based on the true story
of a noble family, with written documentation
dating back to the 11th century. The weapons,
too, are authentic-the swords are imported
from Spain, while the lances are approximately
10-feet long, and intricately designed.
The attention to detail has made Medieval
Times a unique attraction, unlike anything else
in Orange County. It also leaves Romero in a
quandry whenever he has to fill out a loan
application.
UWhen you get to the part where it asks what
you do for a living. I always put that I'm a
knight," he said with a laugh ... And they always
ask, 'Oh, you work at nilhts, huh? Fine, but
what do you do?'"
The question is easy. He fights to the death.

Buster's could easily be passed off as another

from the above but it is as different from them
as niaht and day.
Buster's is the result of a $3 million dinner
house restoration project by Cal Naylor
(founder of the ori&inal Tiny Naytor's restau-
rant) and it bears many reflections of the man
himself. Like Naylor, Buster's is easy aoil'll and
unassumine, welcomina patrons with a low
key, casual friendliness that will readily win
over the toughest critics and customers.
Antiques from the 1930s and 40s provide
a nostalgic backdrop and make for areat
conversation pieces. The biaest antique-a
classic car display-is a real show stopper and
is rapidly IM"I Buster's not only a distinct
personaflty, but also a ton of new business.
Seats nearest the window display are amone
the most popular in the dini111 area, which is
quite a tribute when considerina that the
6,00()..square-foot restaurant can seat in the
neighborhood of 350 people at one time.
Classic car enthusiasts are especially fond of
Buster's and are belinni111 to COOl'eaate there
in increasine numbers on a ncular basis.
Sundays are usually the best time to catch a
free show of some of California's hottest lookifll
· street machines. There's also a lone waitin1
list of owners who can, wait to display their
beauties for a month in Buster's exhibit
The antiques are broulht to life by murals
throulhout that look like somethina stralaht
out of ~hitty Chitty Ba111 Bane." And that's
entirely possible, too, because these render-
inp were created by Tom Peterson, a lonatime
staff artist for Disney Productions. They're as
good (in some cases better) than what is
currently exhibitina in many local galleries.
But all the decorations in the world don't
mean much if the food doesn't measure up.
Happily, it does.
Buster's takes the extra step to make sure
of this by baking all of their own breads, cakes
and pastries, making their own soups and ice
creams and even brewina their own beer.
One of the more interestina dishes on the
menu is a stew that is served in a round,
hollowed out loaf of bread. Customers will be
tempted to order it based on the clever
presentation alone. Weilh options carefully
though, because Bustef's can be proud of all
of its selections.
A wide variety of sandwiches dominate the
menu and all come with a sandwich bar that ·

"The elbum reminds me of early Elton John,"
he continued. •tt shows a lot of sentiment. I

and t think my music reflects that"
. About the only neptive aspect the critics
hlrve pounced on has been the ei~ minute

Down" was too lone. True to his artistic style,
Chester says he couldn't care what the critics
think.
.. It probably was (too lonl), but it was my
album not theirs," Chester said with a chuckle.
.. For me I'm in low with that sona. I love every

is the kind of sona that they llke."

"Listen to This" is an Oranp County product
in the purest sense-some 20 musicians from
Orange County bands participated on it; it was
partly recorded and mixed in Garden Grove;
and is beina distributed by a La1una Hills firm
to Oranp County record stores.
The Oranae County emphasis is no coinci-
dence-Chester wants to see it gain promi-
nence on the artistic front.
And that is why he has included an impres-
sive array of Orange County musicians on his
album. K.K. Martin of A La Carte is one of the
featured artists, as is Chris Gomez of the Skytar
Brothers. Fellow Surftones Matt Quilter, Rick
