The Hartmarx Tennia Claaic
tournament, the fint of it1 kind
at the John Wayne tenniJ club,
brought in hundreds of specta-
ton and produced hours of top-
notch tennis action. The tourna-
ment benefited the Children's
Home Society and included a
pro-celebrity event that featured
Pat Boone, Bruce Jenner, Bob
Seagren and various TV stars.
The proceeds will go to support
the Society's child-care pro-
grams throughout Orange
County.
In the singles competition, Pat
Cash, a Wimbledon finalist, had
no trouble crushing John Fitz-
geraJd for a 6-4, 6-2 victory in
the final.
Fitzgerald started strong with
powerful shots and smooth
serves but they didn 'l last. Cub
took advanta,e of Fitzgerald's
weakening serves and started bis
reign of domination during the
fifth game of the first set. Cash
broke Fitzgerald's serve with a
brilliantly placed high lob which
just caught the baseline. That
made the score 3-2 and Cash was
on his way to a 6-4 victory as
both players held their serves lhe
rest of the set.

Fitzaerald went up against Leo-

in a bard-played, well-bit dou-

Although Cash and Fitzgerald
had just fought a singles battle,
they were still able to work as
a team to defeat Lavalle and
Walts in a 10-8 tie lmak set.
Durina the first set it wu neck

leaving the score 7-S.
Lavalle and Walts took

players and rallial for a 2-6
victory in the second set which
brought the two teams to a
deadlock. Cash and Fitzgierald
looked as if they were on their
way out, but the situation
changed. It was Cash and Fitz-
gerald in the end. After houn
of quality tennis action, Cash
and Fitzgerald wrapped it up
with a 10-8 tie break victory.

Maurer noted, 8dcl.ina that .. San.
Diego Creek ii a big coatributor
(of nutrients) and ii Rowina all
year round. It used to be dry in
the summer."'
Nancy Ski nner, a private
citizen who, with her husband,
Jack, became interested in the
problem last year and baa been
wortiq with the board on the
matter', said that the amount of
nutrients flowing into the bay
from San Dieao Creek is
hunclmh of times the levels
measured in other tributaries to
the bay.
Stinner said that the a1pe is
not a health bazanl, but it is
unsightly, can foul boat screws,
discourages swimming in the
bay, and smells when it dies off.
She noted that some residents
are trying to rate it off the water
near their docks, but M}t grows
so fast, they can' keep up." She
added that the use of copper
sulfate to retard the algae's
growth, which some residents
have resorted to, is illegal in tidal
waters because of its effects on
marine life.

Le Midi: Best of both worlds
BY JUDY DUFFY
Given a choice between hav-
ing someone serve us a 1election
from a menu or wandering
amongst the delicacies and
choosing and picking for our-
selves, most of us would opt for
the best of both worlds.
I can make up my mind about
an cntrcc with a fair amount of
ease. But appetizers and salads
tend to be the areas where local
chefs are exercising the most
creativity these days and besides,
t hcsc arc my favorite courses. I'd
like to try them all, or at least
see them. 111 gladly pass on some
of the more esoteric items that
pop up from time to time.
( Chittcrlin • salad anyone?)
Wcll ... Hooray. Hooray! Le
Midi has captured the best of the
world of gracious, attentive,
table service and combined it
with the fun of a buffet for
appetizers and salads. You11
find this happy marriage OD tap
for their Sunday Brunch.
Le Midi is deliptful The
dining room is fun-filled and
cozy. The decor wafts you to a
French country inn and for the
time it takes to enjoy a leisurely
meal, there you stay. Be sure to

Not surprisingly, companies

Montgomery, senior vice pres-

which has released several pilots.
"They wanted to sell it to the

'Peter Pan' pans out well in Long Beach
BY JACK HOLLAND
It's time for fantasyland, for
the never never land of enchant-
ment. Herc comes Peter Pan
again-and all people who are
young in heart should rejoice.
The Long Beach Civic Light
Opera bas ~red again after its
resounding success with "Evita"
and .. A Chorus Linc." Thia time
magic has come to vivid life with
"Peter Pan," which stan Cathy
Rigby and John Schuck as the
campy villain, Captain Hook.
After seeing Mary Martin
glow as the boy who never
wanted to grow old, followed by
Sandy Duncan's infectious per-
formance, it seemed no one
could ever again make this
:ndomitable vehicle a theatrical
feast. But with Cathy Riaby as
an enchanting and captivating
Peter Pan, this is a production
that is charmed with appeal,
with superb technical aspects,
and with the shiny glow of
prof e~sionalism in every part of
the show. It is, in short, a winner,
and a delight for all those who
have never lost the touch of
beiq a child-in heart ..
Rigby is a bouncing, physi-
cally busy and invigorating
character, and she doea well by
the musical numben. Inf~ she
is a winning surprise, as .she
radiates the entire company. The
performance of John Schuck as
Captain Hook is well polished
camp, and misses no chance to
endow the character with the
kind of full blown villainy with
a comic touch. He quickly

problem wu that many of his
lines were lost either due to a
capricious sound system or the
gobbling up of words.
Manha Kramer is a delight as
Wendy, and the boys who play
the Lost Boya are remarkably
good and work together cohe-
sively as an ensemble. The same
can be said of the pirates and
the Indians. Others who do
noteworthy work are George
Radcliff as Smee and also as
Nan, the dog, Belle Calaway
and Patti Colombo as Tiger Lily.
The flying scenes arc by Foy
and arc wonderful to sec, espe-
cially in Cathy Rigby's curtain

Choosing to stop at one child
was actually one of the easiest
decisions I have ever made.
Deciding which kind of color to
put on my hair bas been ten
times the agony and indecision.
Quite simply, Dave and I arc not
baby people. The older Laura
gets, the happier we are. We can
talk and make jokes with her.
She eats with utensils. She uses
the restroom of her own volition.
(Finally!) One can reason with
her. She occasionally will share
a toy for at least thirty seconds.
Today at Bob •s Big Boy, Dave
and I sat and cackled toaether.
"Look, .. be said, ~be\ using a
fork." "See how she uked to go
potty?" I crowed.
Laura does act like an only
child. s·he is drawn to adults and
We try not to spoil her. We've
only boupt half the warebouae
items in Toys •R Ua. We bring
her around other kidl and let her
fagbt it out. I admit to hovering
a lot, but I know she bu to take
her knocb.
The puppy arrives next
summer. Friends tell me another
child would be infinitely easier.
I just hope I can act him into
a good preschool.
