Newport tales
cautious approach
It's been nearly 20 years since drugs were so much in the
news-it's reminiaa:nt of the turbulent late 1960s. when tales
of LSD and rock star overdoses were banner items in the
papers and the airwaves.
But unlike the 60s, this time the communities are responding
with ho~ confidential information about bow to pt off
alcohol and drugs.. and how to avoid them altoaetber. The
approaches are direct. and they're being delivered to
elementary and junior high-aged lids.
Drug and alcohol awareness is up, and the anti-drug soldiers
arc in high gear. And studies are showing that throughout
our country as a whole, drug use is down.
But isn' it just like a bunch of political baymakers to elbow
in and make a mess of the whole thing.
Jumping on the bandwagon of this national trend, several
inland Orange County cities arc now looking at pawing
personnel ordinances that require employees and prospective
hirecs to take urine tests to prove themselves to be drug-
f ree.
WeT'e all for hiring healthy, productive workers. But we
strongly f cel screening of drug addicts is something that should
happen in an employment interview, not in a urine vial.
The tests arc reported to be up to 95 percent reliable-
whicb means, for example, among the city ofNcwport Beach's
684 regular employees, if all are .. drug-free,,. as few as 39
noll-drug taking workers would be suspected drug addicts.
And that could include City Manager Bob Wynn to Police
Chief Arb Campbell on down.
But fortunately, cooler heads are prevailing in our city
baJI, and although the city is investigating jumping on the
·band~~· it looks as though Newport will adopt a "wait-
and-see' policy toward testing.
We commend our civic leaders for rejecting this destructive
trend, and for having faith in the city's personnel department.
~ If any employee demonstrates substance abuse--type behavior,
or has problems on the job related to abuse, it's the job
. of that person's supervisor or the penonncl department to
rectify the situation.
The current hysteria threatens to mean more government
intrusion into our private lives. Ironically, it may be more
reminisa:nt of the Communist witch-bunts and oaths of
allegiance days of the I 9SOs than of the drug-aazed 1960s.

MftDture pftlellted WU tbe trip

Professor Fred Holland and his

color slides taken by Gretchen
and sketches made by art

of San Bernardino achools), the
Holland 's took you on a breath-
less climb to the great palace of
the Dalai Lama at IS,000 foot
elevation in Lhasa, Tibet, then
through the villa1e1 of the
beautiful Tibetan people. In one
of the four cities they visited, all
the townspeople lined the streets
dreued in their. finest clothes and
top hats just as the Hollands
strolled along. Thia was the one
day of the year when the Dalai
Lama was scheduled to visit.
Another time, rains had
washed out the one mountain
road capable of supporting the
bus carrying the Hollands. So
they had to get out and walk,
from J 4,000 foot elevation down
to 7 ,000 feet, sometimes on
treacherous cliff-huggina traila.
Just looking at Gretchen's slides
wu enoup to auaest veftiao

Kings last year in the final
minutes of the game. Holland
admits he doesn't know what to
expect from this year's game but
as always, the crowd and the
team will be more than "'fired
up."

Duo to walk from Cata I Ina to Newport Harbor on w1ter
Dan Rodea and David Moe
wait on water.
Sounds lite a claim that only
a mo~r would mate. But the
Orange County trial attorney
and the co-founder of the snow
ski magazine Pow•r arc busy
practicing for their Sept. 14
attempt to walk the 30 miles
from Catalina to Newport Har-
bor, seeking a new U.S. record
for distance walking on water.
If the idea seems f ar-fetcbed,
it might help to know that
Hodes. 31, and Moe, 39, will use
an innovative type of ski from
Austria-the Ski Jak, consisting
of I I-foot pontoons worn on
each foot and propelled by a
long paddle. The two expect to
leave Avalon at 2 a.m. on Sun-
day, Sept. 14, landing at the
Newport Harbor Y acbt Club at
approximately 12:30 p.m. They
will be accompanied by an
entourage of kayaks and chase
boats.
Hodes and Moe's trek will
benefit the Orange County
Trauma Society, an organiz.a-
tion founded by Dr. John W•t
to aid in the prevention of
accidental injury and deadl.
Pleclpn are ivitectto W;w the
Jandiaa and have refrabmtnts
at the .Newport Harbor Yecb.t
Club at 720 W. Bay A~
Balboa. There will be a clmriDa
for a Great Barrier Red V8Cation
valued at $5000, donaled by
Contiki Holidays. and those
over J 2 yean old will be offered
their tum at water waiting.
Why did Hodes take up water
waiting? .. I wu lookina for a
new cbaijenge ahtJetically, alMI
water waiting is a great .U-over
workout, ideal ·for-triathlon
training. Having paddled across
in a kayak for the Trauma
Society the last two yean, this
made eminent sense," be said.
Surprisingly, Hodes bad never
tried the Ski Jak before commit-
ting to the 30-mile f undraising
trek with Moe, a veteran of the
sport. "I confess to having bad
serious doubts after my fint try."
added Hodes, who is now the
only Southern California dis-
tributor of the Ski Jak, "but now
I've settled into a regular train-
ing schedule and am looking
forward to the big one."
The quiet. athletic Moe, who
walked on water from Catalina
to the edge of Newport Harbor
lut year. is DO 1tran1er to
adventure. A former world sand-
•kiina chnapioa, Moe enjoys
sea kayatiJaa in A•k•, moun-
tain clirabin1. wind surfing,
bang gliding and backpacking.
Appar~ntly, lots of people
think Dan Hodes and David
Moe can walk OD water. The two
have secured an impressive
roster of sponson for the charity
benefit, including Nordstrom's,
Ocean Pacific, Laser West,
Thundcrware Athletic Hand-
wear. Sundance Natural Juice

Smiths disappoint Irvine crowd with mellow mood
BY LORI SILVER
Wh~n the Smiths opened their
recent concert at Irvine Mea-
dows with the sad melodic tune
.. Please Let Mc Get What I
Want," they probably didn'
realize the irony of the situation.
While the English pop group
effec tively set the stage for a
mello w evening, their fans
wanted something else-a high
energy rock concert which the
Smiths were unable to deliver.
It didn't help that the lead
si nger, Morrissey, bad the
strange habit of laying in various
upside~own positions on the
stage while singing; nor did it
help that the other four members
of the band had the charisma of
couch potatoes. So, at the end
of the show when the Smiths
launched into their only up-
tempo song "The Queen is
Dead," the crowd understanda-
bly went crazy.
A little while after Morriascys
coy remark that the security at
Irvine Meadows arc "outnum-
bered," the first fan jumped onto
the stage. More and more fans
followed that by the end of .. The
Queen is Dead" the stage was
covered with enthusiastic tee-
nagers, and the concert erupted
into chaos.
The situation was unfortunate
because the Smiths had yet to
perform some of their better
songs, including their first bit,
"What Difference Docs it
Make." However, the Smiths did
manage to fit a good range of
old and new music into their
show.
Morrissey dressed in a loose
Had Any Really Great

white outfit, which probably
sent shock waves through the
thousands of Smiths' fans who
chose to dress in black. The
other four memben of the band
wore beige suits, further contri-
buting to their bland appear-
ance.
To hisUredit, MorrisleJl was
able to keep the concert moving
with hil dry sense of humor.
"This song was inspired by
Madonna,.. he announced
before playing 0 Meat as
Murder."
Local folksinger Phranc
opened the concert with a blend
of socially conscious songs.
However, her sarcastic com-
ments and unique songs (includ-
ing "Don' Like Female Mudw-
restling'1 were largely
unappreciated by the audience.

Moody Blues show Pacific
they still have the old magic
BY ANNETTE WATSON
The Moody Blues' perfor-
mance Aug. 30 at the Pacific
Amphitheatre demonstrated not
only the great music the group
has produced in the past two
decades; but also showcased a
veteran rock band who knows
how to put on an entertaining
concert. The Blues f mt ripped
into recent hi ta .. Gemini Dream"
and "The Voice" and imme-
diately gripped the crowd's
attention and, perbaps more
importantly, their concentra-
tion. With audience in band, the
band then gave a musical tour
totally appreciated by the near
capacity crowd at the Pacific.
The band played several
numben from their new albu~
.. The Other Side of Life." How-
ever, as to be expected, the
audience responded more to the
band's classics such as "rm Just
a Singer in a Rock and Roll
Band,.. "Question,.. and "The
Story in Your Eyes. "The loudest
ovation came when they per-
formed two of their earliest hits,
"Tuesday Afternoon.. and

the only one in movies nostalgic

are good special effects that

been retooled as a vision of chic

Michael Mann. There's a giant
crazy killer (Tom Noonan) who
invokes William Blake before he
slaughters families; a cop (Wil-

blind woman (Jo.an Allen) who
briefly becomes the psycho's
lover-she also gets to match

microchips booting up for a

eye-peeling chic; a blindingly
white prison was shot at Atlan-

Mann•s approach is preening
and portentous, full of night-

the rushed, confusing plot, and
that leave the actors (especially
Petersen) stranded on islands of
posturing.
