For this reason it is a particularty

too and the brilhtest stars are usually

Australia is the source of inky blue

I found an interestina piece of rouan

As l'ye said before, the finest sap-

Corona overcom~s opening
jitters to edge Huntington
BY ROBERT CRAilaE
Whenever people think of the
football season opener, whether
it be high school, college or
professional, the word "fumble"
comes to mind. It was no dif-
ferent last Thursday night as
both the Corona del Mar Sea
Kings and the Huntington Beach
Oilers struggled their way
through three quarters of a
ncvcrcnding deadlock., which
CdM barely managed to break
in the final six seconds of the
game to win J.-0.
Stomachs turned and helmets
rattled as the final minutes of the
fourth quarter ticked away.
Huntington Beach punter John
Apostle was caught with the ball
on his own six-yard line. It was
CdM's tum now.
It was first and six for the Sea
Kings in Oiler territory. CdM
quarterback. Mitch Melbon
called three un.successf ul plays in
an effort to post six points,
leaving CdM punter Brian
Vaughan with a 28-yard field
goal attempt. Vaughan, who had
mi•sed 27 and 28-yard attempts
earlier, fared the ball throup tho
goalposts for the winniq play.
Hundreds of fans and team-
mates rushed to the field to
congratulate the seemingly lucky
victon.
When Vaughan was asked
how he f cit about the game he
replied, "It sure is a lot better
being a hero than a goat."
Vaughan bad been waiting for
bis opportunity to prove himself
as a kicker, and after scoring the
winning 3 points, be did more
than just redeem himself, he
became a hero.
Although both teams dis-
played some brilliant potential,
neither of the coaches wu very
happy with bis team's perf or-
mance.
"It was your typical first
game," said CdM's coach Dave
Holland. "They (the referees)

Harbor prepares for ground attack,
but Santa Ana scores in the air
BY DAVID CORTES-
ROBBINS
Going into Friday night's
game against the CIF Southern
Conference champion Santa
Ana High Saints, the Newport
Harbor High Sailors knew that
Robert Lee, who rushed for over
1,000 yuds last season, was the
man to watch.
As it turned out, Newport's
trouble proved not to lie with
the 6-foot 210-lb. tailback, but
with 5-foot-10 175-lb. quarter-
back Richard Fanti who literally
led the Saints to a 29-6 victory
over the Sailors.
"We didn't contain the quar-
terback. very well, but I thought
WC did a good job OD Lee, ..
admits Harbor coach Jeff Brink-
ley.
However, as ineffective as
their defense was in stopping the
Saints from scorin& the Sail on'
offensive line was even more
ineffective, providing scant for-
iificaJion against Santa Ana's
defensive onslaught. . ·~· ' And by virtue of the less than
desirable protection, quarter-
backs Vince Brejfus, Chris Hall,
and Kirk Summers could only
tally 104 yards passing, posting
not a single touchdown.
"We're going to try to correct
the things we did wrong," said
Brinkley, ~e want to protect
our quarterbacks better than we
did. But we11 be all right."'
All three Newport QB's found
themselves scrambling to avoid
the oncoming Santa Ana defense
which sacked both Brejfus and
Summers once, and Hall twice.
eight receptions for n yuds,
once in the fmt quarter and once
in the second quarter to set up
two Sterling Coberly field aoaJs.
And that was it.
Things looked promising for
the Sailors as lrreifus moved the
team downfielcl in 12 plays for
SO yards on their fint possession
of the night.
On that drive Craia made an
18-yard reception, bis longest of
the night, nettin1 a fmt down
on the Santa Ana 11. Three plays

"DESERT BLOOM" (PG)
Good-Though it has a teen
heroine and takes place in the
'50s, this finely acted and
detailed film is not standard teen
drama. It's the dark side of
nostalgia. Las Vegas in 19SO, a
scared little "fun" town living in
the shadow of nearby atomic
testing with kids doing "'duck
and cover" exercises at school,
amid anti-Communist paranoia
fueled by the Korean War. The
story's nuclear family is not
Ozzie and Harriet. T ecn~ager
Rose (Annabeth Gish) can
barely stand her step-father (Jon
Voight), an alcoholic veteran
prone to violence and pompous
opinions, and she gets meager
'COttlto·rc from her mother
(JoBeth Williams), an unre-
formed gambler who doe~n 't
want to face the hard truths.
Two younger daughters watch,
frequently bewildered. Eugene
Corr directed the story by him
and Linda Remy, and while it
doesn't add up to a piercing
statement abut the ·sos or the
atomic age, Corr has a sure fix
on these people in this place.

OUS" (P«r13) Goo•-Jobti
Candy and Eugene Levy play
two flops, a cop bounced off the
force and an inept lawyer, who
sink to service in L.A. -S Guard
Doa Security Service. The story
is a scrap heap of junked parts
from other urban buddy come-
dies, but there's some sass and
even wit in the script (by Peter
Torolcvci and Harold Ramis)
and director Mark Lester knows
what's really good: Candy and
Levy, who have their great
"SCTV" timing and do more
than make funny faces. Candy
is a true actor, and the macho
anger of bis character gives his
fun a charge.
"BORN AMERICAN" (R)
Don't Waste Your Time-Yet
not alive. Three Yank teens
stumble drunk and stupid across
the Soviet-Finnish border, shoot
up a village, kill a priest (who
happens to be a rapist) and suffer
the full bell-bole hospitality of
the KGB. Director 4nd writer
Rcnny Harlin, who has the nerve
to praise John Ford in the film•s
press packet, also has the nerve
to include slobbering scenes of
tonurc and rape that arc among
the shoddiest ever shot. "It isn'
our f auh," whines one of the
boys, "we were drunk." Perhaps
the film makers would like to

direeted with slamming, tension-
1weating overkill. The movie is
compelling like a road accident,
yet it does notbiq to cWify
what women cao do tQ protect
themselves. It just wallows,
theatrically, in their fean. Faw-
cett lets her bony beauty take a
beating, and James Russo bangs
out a load of leering Method
mannerisms as the sadistic
assailant, but the best acting is
in small roles, from Diana
Scarwid and Alfrc Woodard.
They come home to find Mar-
jorie in full fury, a Valkyrie of
vengeancey and they look at her
as if she's no longer human.
What she isn l is very bright.
"THE FLY" (R) Fair-
Mighty silly, and weir~ly
impressive, this revised version
of the I 958 camp horror film
stars Jeff Gold bl um as a scientist
who, in a rare dumb moment,
warps himself into genetic mar-
rigc with a fly. Director David
Cronenberg, a maestro of ick,
directs as if he has real tragedy
here, but Charles Edward
Pogue's clever, snappy script
and the hip wit in Goldblum•s
eyes tell us that just isn' so. A
gory f cast of special cff ects make
this not for the squeamish. It's
for fans· of gross humor and
overwrought style, and those
who just don't care that pop
movie culture is obviously very
late into its '80s decadence.
Geena Davis plays the hip,
pushy reporter who briefly loves
Goldblum, then watches him
mutate into a buzzing, acid-
spcwing horror. Mel Brooks put
up the money, but the result is
much more pandering than bis
previous good deed, wrhe Ele-
phant Man."
06MANHUNTER" (R) Fair-
One of the weird ones. Thomas
Harris' novel ""Red Dragon" has
been retooled as a vision of chic
despair, a sort of Gucci Dostoe-
vcsky, by .. Miami Vice" stylist
Michael Mann. There's a giant
crazy killer (Tom Noonan) who
invokes William Blake before he
slaughters families, a cop (Wil-
liam Petersen) who tries psych-
ing into the killer's mindset; a

GULLIVER'S
Had Any Really Great
"'
PRIME RIBS OF BEEF
blind woman (Joan Allen) who
briefly becomes the psycho'•
lover-she also gets to match
heartbeats with a drugged Ben-
gal tiger-and FBI men who talk
in updated 061>ragnet" style, lite
microchips hooking up for a
brainstorm. The images have an
eye-peeling chic. Mann's
approach is preening and port-
entous, full of nightmarish hints
that never clarify the rushed,
confusing plot, and that leave
the actors (especially Petersen)
stranded on islands of posturing.
"TEXAS CHAINSAW
MASSACRE 2" Poor-Hokum
from bell. Tobe Hooper made
this sequel to his 1974 ghoul hit,
and the big '80s budget has gone
to his bead. The family of
chainsaw maniacs arc back,
backing and cackling in a sort
of meat mall for the demented.
The place is lit up like catacombs
for an Easter service, and the
victims hang on books, in bunks.
A girl disc jockey does lots of
heavy-metal screaming as the
chainsaws buzz, and Dennis
Hopper provides a humorous
note as a Texas Ranger who
seems dwarfed by his bat. He
loou (and acts) like a souvenir
decanter you might buy at the
Dallas/ Fort Worth airport. The
script by L.M. Kit Canon-can
this be the same man who
worked on ""Paris, Texas?"-is
so hokey and overcamped that
the horror stuff never has a
chance to grab us. Fancy but
fatigued, it shows you can'
make a good Z-movie on an A-
budget. Not rated, but those
under 17 will not be admitted.
How about those over 17?
