bu introduced legislation that
would provide an exemption
from the antitrust lan to allow
the television networks, inde-
pendent stations, and the cable
industry to work together to
reduce television violence. The
lqislation aJao would order the
Federal Communications Com-
mission to conduct a definitiw
study of television violence.
These bills, S .2322 and
S.2323, supported by the Amer-
ican Academy of Pediatrics,
should be coming up soon for
a vote on the Senate floor. I urge
Senaton Alan Cranston and
Pete Wilson to vote in favor of
the bills. Concerned parents
should coni.ct their own sena-

this important legislation.

An agreuive defense and
commanding offense pulled
Corona del Mar out of a thfee..
game slump in Friday•s JS--0 win
over the Estancia Eagles.
Exceptional blockina coupled
with tbe ~ maneuverin1 of
senior Jim ~niest repeatedly
moved the ball up the field,
acb.ievin1 a 14-0 lead by half-
time. The flllt touchdown came
toward the end of the first
quarter with a breakaway run
down tbe sideline by Kniest. In
the second quarter, after an
interception by Bill Artukovicb
off a deflected pass, running
backs Matt Patterson and Sean
Woolsley ran the ball down the
field to Estancia •s 11 yard line
on two plays. On the next play,
CdM was back in Estancia 's
endz:one with a quick burst up
the middle by Kniest.
CdM was also very much
indebted to the strong leg of
kicker Brian Vaughn. Vaughn
powered an extra point kick
after each touchdown and did
much , to keep Estancia from
earning any points by comist-
ently sending punts and kick-
offs deep.
The second half waa more of
the same u the Sea Kinp added
another 21 points. At the start
of the third quarter, CdM quar-
terback. Kurt Ehmann tbtew up
a rare pua which Kevin Maas
caughtandranintotbeendz:one
brinsina the score to 21.0.
After a punt by Estancia off
a fourth down, Ehmann turned
to Wooltley for yudqe. A few
quick plays brouaht 20 yards.
Then came a breakaway run
down the side as Woolsley
carried tber ball JS yards for
another CdM touchdown., yield-
ing a JS--0 score at the cod of
the third quarter.
Excited CdM coach Dave
Holland glossed, "We're a good
football team. After the three
losses, we came back again just
like last year."
With reference to next week's
game agaimt cross-town rival
Newport Harbor, Holland
added, .. This win was exactly
what we needed to give us the
momentum necessary for the
next game."
Win over Uni boosts Sailors' playoff chances
BY DAVID
CORTES-ROBBINS
In the world of football there
are two kinds of games. The first
kind is the mismatch, where
everyone in the stadium, includ-
ing the winning team, counts the
minutes like hours. The second
kind is where the minutes now
lite seconds, just the kind of
game the Newport Harbor Sail-
on played, and won 17-t • last
Thursday night against the Uni-
venity Kiah Trojans.
Facina the most evenly
matched team this season, the
Sailon played eye-for-eye foot-
ball with the Trojans in a game
which the Tan' rushing ticked
away almost as fast as the clock.
"We thought we could run the
ball a little bit," said Newport
Coach Jeff Brinkley, "and we
feel pretty aood about what we
did."
Newport's running game,
behind junior runnina back
Scott Morency's 19S yuds on 33
carries, wu responsible for nine
fmt downs and one touchdown.
Compaml to Newportta total
ruabin1 yardqe of 252, Univer-
sity ran the ball ll times to pin
134 yards, and whereas Sailor
QB Kirk Summen pated for 99
yards OD six completions, Trojan
quarterback Jeff Bailey paaed
for ony 32 yud1 OD four com-
pletiom.
-Our o«ew, especially our

League with University.
By the time the half rolled
around both teams had 14 points
on the board, and after dcf ensive
back Drew Sheward nailed Tro-
jan running back Gary Smarr to
end Uni's drive the Sailors
moved the ball 51 yards to set
up a 21-yard Sterling Coberly
field goal.
The Tan' offensive line pro-
vided excellent coverage all
night, and while their defense did
have some luck containing
Smarr, they didn' have enough
to stop Uni from scoring.
Newport got on top first with
Morency scampering two yards
into the end zone on their first
possession.
But with 7:39 to go in the half
Bailey lobbed one to tight end
Craig Allton for six. On a two-
point convenion attempt the
Trojans were stymied by an
unamused Sailor defense.
The Tars extended their lead
to 14-6 a couple of minutes later
on a 33-yard pass from Summers
to Mark Craig.
And on the ensuing kick-off
Smarr returned the ball 94 yards
into the end zone to score, this
after dropping the ball and
recovering it at his six yard line.
This time the two point conver-
sion worked and the Trojans tied
the score.
Running back Ed Milum had
to leave the game early in the
first period with an injured knee,
and taking over for him on
special teams was sophomore
Tom Walker, who filled the pp
nicely.
Tomorrow the Sailors take on
crosstown rival Corona del Mar
High School in a game that will
decide Newport's playoff status.
Cd M is 3-6 overall this season,
1-3 in league, and is virtually out
of post-season contention. A win
against the Sea Kinp will assure
the Sailors of the third playoff
spot.

So, is the parent's reuon
flawed and unfounded? Does the
child know how to decide, even
from experience? There are three
different kinds of decisions to be
considered: the everyday com-

All the residents are beautiful
and squeaky clean. The men
seem to have the solid careen .
One feels that they are bringing
home the fdet mignons in this
pleasant, overwhelmingly
Anglo, safe-to-raise your kids
community. The effect is termi-
nally bland.
I think the ad is a muterpiecc.
I believe it will attract droves of
prospective buyen. Life in the
'80s is scary, especially if you
have kids. You want them to
have good places to play and go
to school You want them happy
and safe-so much so, that you
begin to daydream of .. Leave it
to Beaver... The idea of a
planned community sounds
enticing-no weirdos. A friend
of mine fell prey to such ads, and
moved into one such oasis. The
first week a drunken boy drove
over her lawn and murdered her
pine tree. No enclave is totally
safe. And remember, Beaver's
family WU a little weird, too. l
mean, what did Ward really do
, if anything? I think the neigh-
borhood uaociation ought to
check up on the Cleaven.
