currently thinking about New-
port Center.
Monica Florian, the com-
pany's vice president for policy
management and entitlement,
said Tuesday that "buically, we
are tbinkin1 about Newport
Center and tryin1 to determine
where, if anywhere, we will go
now."
She said that the company is
aware of the council clilcuuions
"and we're interested in talking
with them about it," but she
added that where the company
will go from here .. is atill open."
"We're gratified that the com-
munity is thinking about the
possible benefits," she com-
mented.
Newport Harbor Art Museum
executive director Kevin Comey
said Monday of Sansone's effort
that 'whenever a city council-
mem bcr shows that type of
interest and support for a cul-
tural institution in the city, it bu
to be a good sign."
But, be added, any expansion
of the mmeam will have to
involve the city, the mmeum and
the Irvine Company in a COOJ>-
erative effort and "whether all
three are willing to combine
properties now, after the defeat
of Measure A, is an open ques-
tion. I can' predict what will
happen."
... We have to find aomething
that's do-able," said Cox of the
~ew that's DOW going OD. "It
bu to have community support
and it bu to be economically
feuiblc. If not, it's not do-able."'
"We're just initiating the
thought proceu now,"be added.
... It will be a couple of months
before we resolve what aspects
to examine further."
Sansone, Cox try to save
the babies of Measure A
On Nov. 2S, the voters of Newport Beach threw the baby out
with the bathwater when they defeated Mcuure ~ the Newport
Center expansion plan. Now, spurred by Councilman Phil SaNOne,
who oppoted Measure ~ and Mayor John Cox, who supported
it, the City Council ii looking for ways to bring the baby back.
Sansone told the Planning Commiuion earlier thia month that
he'd like to ace the city amend its general plan to allow for the
expansion of the Newport Harbor Art Mmeum that was envisioned
in Measure A.
Sansone and Cox led a council discussion last week that identified
three other aspects of Mcuure A that the city might want to try
to resurrect: the Teen Center, the Fashion Island expansion, and
residential development. The council asked the city planning staff
to lo~k into each of the four matters and report back in January
on possible general plan amendments that can be procused in 1987
to put the projects back on track.
Of counc, all of these proposals binge on the willingness of the
Irvine Company to participate, through land dedication and/ or
other very material contributions. Neither Sansone nor Cox nor
the city staff have discussed these projects with the Irvine Company
since the defeat of Measure A, and the company bas not seen
fit to share its internal discussion of these matters with the general
public.
It would be very easy for the Irvine Company to say, in effect.
.. you had your chance" and decline to cooperate further. After
all, the company saw some S3 million and two years of work go
up in a puff of electoral smoke, and things like that can definitely
color a business's attitude toward the city and its residents,
CertainJy, the city has little or nothing to off er the company
directly in return for its largesse. An increase in the lucrative office
space allotment at the Center is out of the question, and the terms
in which Sansone talks about residential development there do not
seem to leave a lot of room for company profit.
We would hope that cooler beads prevail in the company's
boardroom, though. The long-term benefits of an expanded museum
and new T ecn Center can be considerable. both in boosting the
company's image among the voters of the city and in maintaining
the top-of-the-line image that has kept Newport Beach in general
and Newport Center in particular a most desirable business address.
We would also hope that the City Council, and particularly the
slow-growth faction on the council and in the city, can realize that
the Irvine Company is not incorporated as a non-profit institution
and show some flexibility in the residential and Fashion Island
planning to allow it to pencil out for the company.
We could get a healthy baby out of this yet.

Time of my Life
BY nM FELTON
You may not see America,
but America can see you
Shortly after we settled down
in our deluxe bedroom on
Amtrak Train Number 36, the
.. Desert Wind~" the sleeping car
attendant brought us two bottles
of wine, two plastic glasses and
two boxes of assorted snacks.
Before we finished our 8,000
miles on America's prize rail-
road system, we bad been given
14 bottles of wine and the same
number of snack boxes. We also
were greeted at the start of each
day with f rcsh coffee and the
morning newspaper, compli-
ments of Amuak.
These touches of service were
part of a remarkable marketing
program which romances the
American rails as the finest way
to travel and sec the country.
The magazine ada, the television
commercials, the travel agency
posters all herald a new qe of
rail transportation. And when
you contact Amtrak by tele-
phone, the friendly voice at the
other end enhances the glamour
of a new day for America'•
trains.
You can crou the country for
a fare of S250. The return trip
costs nothing-roundtrip is the
same u one-way. And you are
permitted three atopoven along
the way at no extra cost. Only
your meals and sleeping accom-

roads are totally government
owned and subsidized .
But the Reagan administra-
tion does not control the man-
agement of Amtrak, and that's
our chief complaint after 8,000
miles on five different trains.
"Sec America!" the Amtrak
commercials proclaim. But how
can you sec America when the
windows are too dirty to see
through. My video tape camera
and my Nikon system brought
home miles of dirty windows,
little American scenery. And it
would take so little-one main-
tenance pcnon at one of tbe 30

long-handled brush or even a

in three different way1 that my
marriqe would end in divorce.
I wu deva1ted. With three
children under the ap or three
at tile time, that WU the lut
tbin1 I wanted to bear.
I turned that negative meaage
into a positive one by realizina
that every marriage bu the
potential to end in divorce.
Marital relatiombips have fun-
itatiom, unmet expectations, the
partnen chanae, circunutancet
change, things get boring.
Today, divorce seema the fint
notion that come1 to mind when
the marriage turn1 sour and
couplet separate.
The natural proareuion ii
that individuala bepo to loae
hope for any reconciliation.
Some become bitter aod anpy
with the other. Their mindt close
and they bqin to seek 1upport
for their almOlt automatic deci-
1ion to pt tbe divorce out of the
way and set on with life. How
selfaab and 1hort1ipted we can
be IOmetima.
The true effecu of our unre-
10lvcd marriqa will not be felt
by ua but rather our children'•
generation. Chances are areat
that our children will marry
someone who bu been railed by
a single parent. Will that person
they marry know how a mar-
riage worb when they have had
no home model? I don't know

Whereas his portrayal of
Scrooge the miser conveyed the
acidic attitudes that mate the

role famous, his transformation
to free spender never teemed u
complete, or convinc:in&
In tbe pat two years. though,
be bas become more expert at
bis role. Now, when be becomes
kind hearted and generous, be
does so with entbuaium and
vigor, and a comic touch or two
thrown in for good measure.
The show\ best scene comes
when Scrooge, after being
visited by the three apparitions,
awataas on Christm.u Day to
discover that be bu been liven
a new lease on life. Landon
prances about lite a child with
a gigly tone in bis voice, laugh-
ing and finding amusement in
items big and sm•D. while he
dresses for the day.
And to top it off. he does a
neat little somenault over the
bed, ending up with his top bat
mounted fa.rmly on b.ia beid, to
the audience\ absolute deliaht.
Without doubt. this ii maually
one of the fmeat momenta in
Orange County theater.
Though be is definitely the
focal point, Landon sett a lot
of help from the rat of the
talented cut. Richard Doyle
retuma once more u the Spirit
of Chriatmu Put, and the
VICtnam vderaD is ouU1aDding.
u alway1. An authoritative
actor, Doyle featura a booming
voice aa be tabs Scrooae on a

And tbea there ii John Ellina-
ton\ utfu1 rmdition of Bob
Cratcbit. Scrooae\ clerk Lib
Landon, Ellinpon bu con-
tinued to improve upon bit role
throqb tbe ycan, and be ii truly
delightful tbia time around, too.
Ron Michaelson is once apin
fantastic u the Spirit of Chriat-
m.u Present. Like a meny party-
goer, be climbs out of a trunk
with a beaming smile, joyful
laugh and a repertoire of jokes
and wiaecncb, briJllinl a ligh-
ter touch to the abow.
The list of stellar performan-
ces goes on and on; Art K.oustit
and Martha McFarland u Mr .
and Mn. Fezziwia; Don Took
u tbe abOlt of Scroop) Iona-
dead buainesa partner, Jacob
Marley; and Michelle Wallen u
~ Scrooge's lister.
Lite Orange County, inciden-
tally, Wallen bu literally grown
up with .. A Christmu Carol.• A
talented, 17-year-old actress, she
first appeared in the program
when she was nine, u Belinda
Cratcbit. As the program bu
matured. so have her responsi-
bilities; she is excellent in her
role as Fan.
H one wants to be nit-picky
then it is possible to find a flaw
here and there; for instance,. th~
flambe effect of tbe Cratcbita•

guests also share this wing. Such
touches as an elegant brass basin
and faucets and cedar panelled
ceiling in the guest bath, and
built-in storage and a wonderful
plate shelf bordering the entire
den, arc typical of the attention
to detail that has gone into the
decor of the home.
But what is perhaps most
striking about the property is
that there is never a feeling of
condominium about the house.
The space is open, there is no
one above or below, no shared
drive-way. The result is a single
family feel for a trifling price
when compared to other proP"'
erties located on the water.

added attraction at 1311 Bayside

"The owner bas made other

that 1311 Bayside Drive has to
