year. A redevelopment plan for
tt.Cannery Village and McFad-
den--Sq uarc area was approved
bv the council. Parents banded t~gether to promote an aJcohol-
frec grad night and were highly
SUC<:essful. The police usea
roadblocks to get a handle on
the cruising traffic on the Penin-
sula. The City Council formed
a Youth Council and actually
gave it sonfething meaningful to
do in the development of a youth
center in town.
Politically, 1986 was an elec-
tion year, but it was a compar-
atively tame one, with most
incumbents easily securing re-
election. What sparks there were
came from the 40th Congres-
sional District and the Sixth
Council district.
In the 40th CD, the June
primary featured a hard-hitting
battle between incumbent Rep.
Bob Badham and challenger
Nathan Rosenberg on the
Republican side. Badham won,
only to face another barrage
from Democrat Bruce Sumner
in November, which he also
survived.
In the Sixth District council
race, two prominent pro-growth
candidates, Michael Lapin and
Pat Michael , split that vote,
allowing slow-growther Phil
Sansone to amass a plurality and
win the scat. That race was al o
marked by controversy over the
endorscmnt of Lapin by county
Republican Chairman Tom
Fuentes, which brought bowls of
outrage and a request for a state
investigation from Michaels,
who is also a Republican . ...,
This past year also saw visits
by once and, perhaps, future
Presidents. Richard Nixon came
to town to boost the Senate
campaign of Bruce Henben-
sobn.
On the sports front~ the city
played host to a USA v. Yugos-
lavia water polo exhibitio~ a·
rematch of the 1984 Olympic
final which Yugoslavia again
won.
In high school sports, the local
schools flexed some muscle, with
Newport Harbor taking league
championship honors in soccer
and volleyball, and Corona del
Mar securing the basketball
crown, all in the bovs' division.
And, of course, Irrelevant
Week XI was a lot of fun for
a lot of people, but you can skip
this sentence because, after all.
it's irrelevant.

Mother 's Kitchen's great food overshadows its· haalih load label
BY JUDY DUFFY
Around this time last year I
was promising to shed the same
ten pounds that arc accompan-
ying me into 1987. Everyone has
a diet hint, right? Ive decided
the true answer lies in foregoing
the Jim Brady cuts of prime rib
and half a bottle of wine fol-
lowed quickly by cheesecake and
cappuccino. Moderation will be
my almost-always watchword in
1987.
Knowing that there is a better
way to eat, and actually doing
it, are two different things.
Luckily, I recently made the
acquaintance of Mother's
Market and Kitchen at 225 E.
17th Street in Costa Mesa. This
bustling emporium sells healthy
stuff of every type and descrip-
tion. From vitamins tu corn
flakes , it's all on the shelf or in
the kitchen. Recent media
reports thai Southern Californi-
ans are opting for white choc-
olate chip cookies instead of the
health food that bas been so
popular for years seemed a trifle
premature as my companion and
I waited a not unreasonable 15
minutes for seating in the cute

central fl oor space at this estab-
lishment. This on-a Tuesday

this reporter to pretend to be any
critic of health food. Frankly an
unsprayed vegetable tastes and
looks preu.y much like a sprayed
one fr om my side of the table.
But I do know good food when
I find 1t and I found it here, in
abundance. If. in fact, it is
healthier, good deal.

Large pc>rtions, to aay tbe least.
seem to be on tap at Mother's.
If running out of any disb is an
indication of the popularity of
not only a reatauran~ but the
dish itself, Mother's bas a couple
of hits on its bands. The special
fritata. as well u baklava, were
sold before I bad a chance to
sample them.
What we did sample for des-
sert was· a concoction of whole
wheat crepes layered with
apples, raisins and other good
things and Called Apple Bonitza.
Unlike anything Ive tasted, it
was a ftne ending for a terrific
meal that came to about SIS for
two people an~ provided a
nutritional interlude that left no
room for later snacking. A fair
price for an outstanding meal.
I recommend Mother's Kitchen
in 1987. And may your ten
pounds disappear and take my
ten pounds with them. Happy

seating problem with µsben who
acted as confused as the patrons
who waited not always patiently
for their seats. ·
As if that was not enough, the
show itself had its share <?f
difficulties. The audience waited
impatiently for Davis to appear.
which he did not do until aJmost
two hours after the show had
begun. ·
The program was a good one
at least in thought, but there
were far too many groups all
wanting time. There. understan-
dably. was the desire not to slight
any group. but there were so
many dances and songs that one
yearned for some kind of break
in the pattern. There were some
really fine ptrf onnanccs. but
most had come to sec and hear
Davis.
Martin Vivion was the pro-
ducer, and is to be commended
for bis efforts. He and Peggc Lee
Logefiel did all they could to
present a night of music and
dancc1o please almost everyone,
but logistics marred their ded-
icated efforts. Viviott in parti-
culr could have been more
-
se1cctive in the offerings of the
various cultures.
But when Sammy Davis Jr.
fiaally appeared it was already
late in the evening and he could
have been defeated if he badn'
been a performer of immense
talent. He soon got the huge
crowd c rying for more. His
command of the audience was
magical. His touching and si n-
cere tribute to all of the faces
who ha\'e helped to mould this
country was a highlight of the
night.
He transformed a huge arena
into an intimate setting, which
is no minor achievement. He
brought down the house with
most of bis numbers but espe-
cially with °'Begin the Beguine"
and a medley of songs by
Anthony Newley. His solid
smash of the night was his very
moving and heartfelt .. Bojan-
gles .. number, a tribute to Bill
Robinson of the days gone by.
His dosing with the "Sing a
Song of Brotherhood" with a
group of children was a perf cct
finale to a memorable pcrf or-
mancc.
