Officials eye lessons of Hixson fire
BY JUD Y D UFFY
Authorities are k~ping a tight lid
on official speculation about the
causes, and costs, of the fire at Hixson
Metal Finishing on February 22.
At prcsstirnc Monday, police and
fire officials expected to have a
finished report in their bands on
Thursday or Friday at the earliest.
In an interview at bis office last
Friday, rU"e Chief James Recd looked
back on what began as a report of
a structure fire at 835 Production
Place. It turned out to be the biggest
incident his department bad bandied
since the oil well fire in West Newport
a little over 18 months ago.
... In some respects it was more
difficult and technical to fight. We bad
to contain the run-off because we
Uicw there were chemicals in the
building," said Recd ... It was a
challenge."
There were pluses and minuses to
having the fire occur on the weekend,
according to Reed. Because it was
Sunday, there were no employees
expected to be on the site to try to
contain it until the fire depanment
arrived .
-rbe fire had a good chance for a
long pre-bum before it was detected."
said Recd.
On the plus side. there were fewer
people in the area on Sunday. Busi-
nesses and two local private schools
stood nearly vacant.
.. The fewer people exposed, the
better ... said Reed.

mination of who will pay them. wasn't

An important move
In chess, if a pawn can survive the viciuitUdca of the
game, line up enough support and move at the right
times until it reaches the eighth rank, the far end of
the board, it can become a queen.
It docan \ happen very often. SurroundeCI by more r
powetful pieces, pawm are often no more thaD fodder,
to. be traded off at the beginning or end of a larger
exchange of pieces.
Last year, when the Irvine Company was trying to
win approval of Measure A, the Newport Center
expansion plan, o._e of the organizations supporting the
measure was the Newport Harbor Art Museum, which
stood to gain an expanded facility in the deal. ·
Anti-A forces claimed that the mmcum was being
used by the Irvine Company to win approval of the
larger plan, that it was merely a pawn in a much larger
game involving much more powerful concerns.
That exchange on November 4 proved disastrous for
the Irvine Company (which lost an 800,000-square-foot
castle and probably a knight in the person of Tom
Neilsen), but · the pawn survived. Even the victorious
slow-growth advocates urged that a museum expansion
be pursued. .
Last wee~ Don Bren moved the pawn to the sevellth
rank with the offer of a 10-acre parcel at PCH and Time of my Life
MacArthur to house a new and vastly improved Newport
Harbor Art Museum. It is now just one step away from BY JIM FELTON
becoming a queen among Southern California museums.
That final move to glory, as in chess, will not come
easily, however. The museum must raise $10.5 million
to match the value of the Bren grant and underwrite Newp· Ori loses 1·1s champ1·ons construction of the new facility.
But, the pawn is now advancing without opposition of beauty as Stewarts move and we hope and believe that the Newport Beach
• community will join in the fund-raising effort and march
with the museum to that final square, because this.is
now a game with no losers.
The enlarged exhibit space, auditorium, education and
r~arch facilities, sculpture garden, and workshops envi-
sioned for the new museum would directly benefit a
wide range of people and indirectly work to the
advantage of the entire city. A successful fund-raising
effort would make everyone a winner.

Choreography chores for

Karen A.zcllberg had the wboic

production, Reminisa:nt of the
dance styling of the '50s, but with
updated moves more familiar to

seen changes in the industry.
.. Back then you could buy a
small condominium in Irvine for
$22,000 and an expensive home
there cost $40,000. Today the
average sales arc over SJ00.000.
I have watched that grow, .. she
said.
Scott-Evans likes working at
Unique Homes because of the
association with Wood and
