A 'minor' spill shows
potential for major loss
·Just when the oil companies thought it was safe to go
back in the water, an undersea pipeline with an impeccable
sense of timing ruptured last week, spilling a few gallons
of oil and dosing three miles of beach for the better part
of three days.
Tbantfully, the amount of oil spilled into the ocean was
quite small, and the damage to the environ.ment minimal,
but the incident illustrated the impact an oil spill can have
on the area's beaches and tourism and underlined the concerns
of those fighting to keep our coastal waters free of more
drilling rigs. .r \
As Laguna Beach Counciiman Bob Gentry sai~ "A little
oil goes a long way~" .
Indeed Some two barrels of +bed the beaches from
the spill; three miles of beaches were closed. Would anyone
care to cstimatc the economic cost of such a "minor,,, spill
occurring during the summer tourist season in Newport Beach
or Laguna Beach? How about the cost of a •mocterate"spill?
A "major" spill?
And then, besides the lost revenues for hotels, beach
cooc:::essions, boardwalk shops and restaurants, and other
busioesses, there's the cost of deanup. The estimates for the
cost of cleaning up the -minor" Seal Beach mess IUD about
a quarter of a million dollars.
How much would it cost, and how much time would it
take, to clean up a -moderate" or a .. major" ~ill?
Keep in mind that these larger types of oil spills would
also have significant impacts on the marine ecology and the
fishing industry, which the Seal Beach spill, thankfully, did
not.
You get the picture. The potential downside of increasing
oil activity off the Southern California coast is a staggering
economic loss. What would we get from it7 A handful of
jobs and a fraction of a percent of the annual oil consumption
of the U.S.
We've said it before, and we11 say it again right no . It's
j ust not worth iL
Secretary of the Interior Donald Hodel and the oil industry
should shelve plans to increase drilling activity in Southern
California waters immediately, and those plans should stay
on the shelf f orevcr.

During the Harbor Area

faith-sharing and fellowship to
those interested in expanding
their spiritual awareness and in
meeting others with similar
