J 5, and will present special
programming until the end of
the fundraising drive on August

ported by grants from various
corporations and donations
from viewers.
Some of the special program-

One copter program
makes more sense
Local cities might have jumped the gun when they
leaped to replace their lost helicopters before the
National Transportation and Safety Board issued its
official fmdings in the air tragedy that cost the liVe5
of two Costa Mesa pilots and a civilian observer. We
would have preferred to see the NTSB findings bcf ore
the fmal evaluations of the he.licopter programs by the
Newport Beach and Costa Mesa city councils.
But, nevertheless, city fathers have been busily signing
checks to foot the bills for the two new choppers,
($657,000 in Costa Mesa and $318,000 in Newport
Beach). While they've been about it, the Sheriff's
Department has been taking heat for what some
opponents see as a overly ambitious helicopter program.
Having lost at the city level, these folks have gone after
the county.
We disagree with those dissenters even more
vehemently than we might have disagreed with Costa
Mesa and Newport Beach when they opted to imme-
diately replace their helicopters. The way we see it, the
Sherifrs Department is where helicopters belong.
From where we sit, it makes more sense to build a
strong helicopter program in the Sheriffs Department
than in individual cities. The program could be run on
a joint powers or mutual aid basis, with cities able to
call on the copters in a pursuit or other emergency
situation and perhaps also supply pilots -or other-
personnel on a rotating basis.
A Sheriff's helicopter could be called to the scene to
do what's required and then leave, taking its ongoing
expense with it. For everyday patrol duties, one
helicopter should be sufficient to cover at least Newport
Beach and Costa Mes~ and probably Huntington Beach
and Fountain Valley in the bargain. The Shetj!f's
Department could have copters covering similarly sized
areas throughout the county.
Why not let the County keep the hassles of operating
a helicopter force? We think it makes sense.

diately replace their helicopters. The way we sec it, the
Sherifrs Department is where helicopters belong.
From where we sit, it makes more sense to build a
strong helicopter program in the Sherifrs Department
than in individual cities. The program could be run on
a joint powers or mutual aid basis, with cities able to
call on the copters in a pursuit or Qther emergency
situation and perhaps also supply pilots or other
personnel on a rotating basis.
A Sherifrs helicopter could be called to the scene to
do what's required and then leave, taking its ongoing
expense with it. For everyday patrol duties, one
helicopter should be sufficient to cover at least Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa, and probably Huntington Beach
and Fountain Valley in the bargain. The Sherifrs
Department could have copters covering similarly sized
areas throughout the county.
Why not let the County keep the hassles of operating
a helicopter force? We think it makes sense.

For some Harbor teams
it's championship season
BY ROGER BLOOM
The Harbor Area Baseball
League wound up its season in
a flurry of championship show-
downs over the last two weeks,
paced by Estancia's victories on
both ends of a doubl«>header
against Los Alamitos to take the
high school division crown.
Estanci~ coached by Paul
Troxel, who is the assistant
coach of the schoors squad
during the school year, came out
on top in each of the pair of
thrillen, 7-6 and 4-3, to succeed
Corona del Mar as the reigning
Harbor Area league champs.
In the" AA" division, made up
of youngsten preparing to enter
high school, the Reds, under
Frank Miles and Jay Leonarci,
squeaked by the Cardinals 2-1
to wrap it up.
In the 06 A" league, the Giants
make quick wort of the Yankees
in their final game to secure that
division crown. The Giants,
coached by John Ucker with
assistance form Eric Van Doren
and Kurt Erickson, won 1~ in
five innings in a game called
because of the league's IOrun
06skunk" nile.
In that divisioa, Fred Pajarito
won the Dean Holder Memorial
Trophy as the Player of the Year.
The award is presented to the
youngster· who best combines
"sportsmanship, leadership,
ability, and dedication," said
league director Mike McMiJl•n
In the "BB• league, the Pirates
downed the Dodgen 11-7 to end
the season on top of the heap
and cam-coach Steve Willon
Cdacb of the Year bonon.
In the "B" division, the Car-
dinals beat the Cubs twice, 7-2
and 94, to win the crown among
the fifth and sixth grade tums.
Dan Shepardson guided the
Cards through the season, with

four basic catcgoties of sleep

Apnea is. a condition in which

Nan::olepsy is C8UICd by the
inability of the brain to maintain
a norinal balance between sleep

sudden loss of muscle control,
nigbtmua and sleep paralysis.
According to Boker, Sleep
Apnea and Narcolep1y are two
of tbe most common disorden.
The third catqory of sleep
disorden is a disruption in tbe
sleep-wake cycle, most often
occurring in pe0ple who keep

who travel f~uently to differ-

REAL ESTATE-WE CARE HARDER
Real Estate Tips
For Homeowners
HOUSE NOT SELLING?
In this very active real estate market, almost any house will sell
fast. If a house sits more than a few weeks on the market. it is
suffering from one of three problems:
1) It has a problem location
2) It is over-priced
3) It is unattractive and needs
some sprucing up.
In regards to problem# 1, there is little that can be done about it
This reminds one of the importance of location when purchasing
in the first place.
If the prrobtem is not one of location. the most immediate
solution seems to be one of dropping the price. Frequently,
however, some paint and carpets and landscaping can bring out
the best in a home and make it move with the market, and without
dropping the price.
Recently one of our listings sold at )east $25,000 below market
value because a divorce had created such a feeling of animosity
between the two owners that neither was willing to invest a penny
in up-graaing. Tnis was unfortunate,
because $10,000 mvested would have
returned $25,000 in the sale. ·

She was invited to speak at
this recent retreat which cen-

It was after high school. and I
went into a period of time of

my life which included a short
marriage and a divorce. I bad
a time of trans! onnation when
I read the words of Paul in
Romans 12:2: •Do not conform
yourselves to this age, but be
transformed by the renewal of
your mind, so that you may
judge wbat is God1s will, what
is good, pleasing and perfect.'
Also, something Fat her Bill

04for example, I know this is
true because while I was attend-

noticed a young girl next lo me
who did not seem to be OK. It
turned out she bad a drug
problem. She called me out of
the blue one day and wanted to
come over. She &hit the pit' (an

Some newspapers deliver copies to a wide range of cities, including Laguna
Beach, Fountain Valley or Huntington Beach. Which is fine-unless you 're a local
realtor who does business in the HarbOr Area.
If you are, and if advertising in your immediate neigb, borhood is important to
you, then 1he Newport FAsign and 1he Costa Mesa News offer a hometown
advantage. That's because we distribute our real estate section only in N~rt
Beach and Costa Mesa, and no place else. So your advertising is seen by S0,000
people in YOUR immediate market.
The people ·who will buy homes from you. And list with you.
Advertising to cities you don't do business in just doesnl make sense. Qr cents. . .
The Hometown Advantage.
