Edlforllll Support the merchants Slow-growth activists have once again raised the specter of traffic snarls and rampant development in -where else? -·Newport Center, as a result of an Irvine Company request to add 69,000 square feet of shops and shift l ,3SO already-approved theater seats into the Fashion Island shopping center. To hear the slow-growthers tell it, adding a ·IWf doz.en movie theaters and a few shops to the center will bring traffic to a screeching halt from Corona del Mar to John Wayne Airport, and open the door to a forest of new highrises in Newport Center. Once again, these folks are letting their near- pathological suspicion of the Irvine Company stand in the way of a much-needed improvement to the community, and the merchants of Fashion Island are getting caught in the squeeze. A continuing problem with the Fashion Island shopping center bas been that despite offering probably the f mest goods and services available in Orange County in many retail areas, the center bas had a difficult time attracting customers because of a lack of amenities and its distance from the nearest freeway. Sales have historically and consistently lagged behind South Coast Plaza and Westminster Mall. There's nothing to be done about the lack of ready freeway access, of course, but the merchants in F asbion Island, and the Irvine Company, have been trying to get some amenities -like an outdoor amphitheater, a community center, and, especially, a movie theater complex -added to the mall as a means of attracting some much-needed foot traffic to the shops. They have also begun trying to broaden the retail offerings at the center to reach out to a wider public. You would expect the community to support such a move -after all, sales taxes from the center do go to suppon a number of wonhy city programs and who wants to drive to Costa Mesa or beyond for a movie? -and, indeed, such suppon was found during a long series of public meetings instigated by Mayor John C . Cox Jr. after the defeat of Measure A a year ago. The proposal will not noticeably affect traffic. Moviegoers and shoppers just aren't on the road during peak traffic hours, the only times the traffic problem is really a problem. And extrapolating from six movie theaters to a million square feet of office space is simply paranoid logic without a grounding in reality. We urge the council to OK the much-needed expansion of Fashion Island, and we urge SPON to save its slings and arrows for overblown office projects that deserve them. Im THE NEWPORT a••-• • Happy Thanksgiving Woody's Wharf is delightful in winter BY MARCUS DIETZ For years, Ralph Furra dreamed of owning Woody's Wharf Restaurant in Newport Beach. A dentist by trade, be used to drive put Woody's every day on his way home from wort. For three long yean be made pur- chase offen, only to bve each one turned down. Finally, on August 19, be officially wu able to pry the restaurant away from the previous owners, a group which included actor Chuck Norris. In the process, be became only the third owner in the restaurant's more-than 25 years of operation. Drills and instruments, though, aren' the only thinp Furra bad put in people's mouths before acquiring Woody's Wharf. His f atbcr was in the restaurant business and Ralph p'CW up in i~ IO be'i DO straap" to the Iona boan and bard wort that oW!lig aa eatery entails. Inf~ the only chanaes so far have been behind the scenes, so the tnidemart that bas made Woody's famous -fme dining on the waterfront - remains intact. Dining on the water in the winter is esptrially delight!~ because local restaurants tend to be uncrowded. On a recent visit we found o~ tables and a clear, starlit night we enjoyed on the covered, heated patio. Even better, we lcamc:d that Woody~s is now offering all dinners at half-price on Monday through Thursday evenings from S-7. which means that full dinners usually running in the S 12-$20 range would cost the same. • a meal at. our favorite Mnican ha,..-L Ralph Farra Rileatcd we umplc die ~ cOcttail for an appetizer~ aad it wu an exccllaat choice indeed. Incred- ibly laige chunks of clam and potato were immencd in rich, flavorful, thick chowder. H clam chowder finds a warm spot in your heart, a visit to Woody's is a must, because their's is among the very best. Moving on, I enjoyed filet mignon, while my fiance ordered mabi-mahi. The fi.let mignon was accompanied with Bemaise Gulliver's to serve feast Gulliver's is the perfect place for an old-fashioned, family Thanksgiving celebration. Hemefeci BJ CHERYL STEllLING "Once you have slept on an island, you 11 never be the same," says an old poem, whose author's name escapes memory. This fact may rina true, as confirmed by the contented residents of Newport Beach's Lido Isle. Bu yen looking for island property will find a real plum in this week's featured home, located at 135 Via Zurich. .. An important feature is the location," said listing agent Bill Feeney, with Waterfroat Homa, Inc ... The home is at the south end of the island, and the only traffic comes from the residents." He also pointed out that most lots on Lido arc 30 feet wide and the featured home's lot is 52 feet wide, making it almost a double lot. MEDITERRANEAN PARADISE The Mediterranean atmos- phere of the Island is highly reflected in the home. It begins with the terra cotta planters in front of the home, the tile walkway, on up to the tile parapet roof. Large, arched windows with European-style shutters complete the scene. once imide the home, tbe drama ii apparent at once. One enten throuab 16-foot doon to the two-ctory entry hall. The terra cotta tile floor it carried in from the outside to the in.aide and continua throup the kit- chen, dining room and living room. To the left of the entry ball is the gourmet kitCben, with brightly colored tile counten. A center island holds the gas stove and built-in chopping block. Cabinet sp.ce is pot lackin& with rich woods that are desired by today's homcownen. Other amenities in the kitchen include a double wall-mounted oven and trash compactor. The master CQntrol for the intercom system is in the kitchen. In the dining area, a built-in wood sideboard provides plenty of storage for dishes and counter space is abundant. Arched French doors compliment the ambience of the kitchen and dining area, which can be easily described as country- Meditcrrancan. 1be wall plaster is rough, with bits of straw, to create the illusion of adobe walls. A staircase at the back of the dining area leads to the family room-loft and a bedroom and bath. I • ENTERTAINMENT HOME "This is a perfect home for those who lib to entertain,• uid Feeney. "It bas a flow from the dining room to the titcben, to the living room and patio." From the entry hall, guests will walk straight to the two- story li~g room. In the comer ii a pueblCHtyle fireplace. The beam ceiling contains track ligbta for a dramatic effect. A bevdcd and etched window lets in the morning sunshine.
