I recently tead an article on
the legal implications of bugging
or patting a student on the
shoulder. 1be advice to educa-
tor. was to back off from any
physical contact with the stu-
dents for fear of pouible accu-
sations of molestation or inap-
propriate behavior.
Several teacben in Orange
County have been accused
recently of various forms of
sexual abuse or molestation.
Some or the teachers have
imiated that they were only
patting the student on tbe
shoulder or giving a f riendJy
non-sexual bug. To further
compound matten, aome female
atudentl have alleged that male
te.cben have bad sexual liaisons
with them.
It is a frightening time to be
in education, particularty in view
of the emergence of a litigious
society. Lawsuits are ao common
that we counselon bad a special
meeting just to review the ways
we can Ft sued. It took two
houn!
The counselor, in fact, prob-
ably runs an especially great risk
of having nurturing behavior
misconstrued. I, for one, am a
bugger. I come from a .. buggy"
family and have bugged and
patted and arm-socked my way
dirough IS ycan of teaching and
counseling. I do not care if it's
a boy or girl that I am bugging.
I do not care if they are prc-
pubesocnt or oozing with testos-
terone. 1 just bug the kMh that
need a bug. As one counselor in
the article pointed out, a coun-
aelor may be the only penon that
has ~' bugged the child. I
intend to continue those expres-
sions of love and support.
Here arc some situations
where a bug or shoulder pat was
in order.
•The suicidal boy, Joey, stays
alive and in school. breaks away
from his gang activity, and
receives his diploma. Hug city!
• A girl comes in and tells me
that her mom bu pulled a knife
on her the eveniq before. Fint
I bug, then I call child abuse (I
can get sued for not calling.
too!). As a matter of fact, the
mother can then threaten to 1ue
me if the allegation ia
unfounded.
• A chronic truant tells me she
bas stAyed in all her claues for
a whole week, even though it's
been good beach weather. She
gets at leaat a pat on the
shoulder, maybe a sock in the
arm.
• School rebel. chip-on·t~
shoulder male reports that bis
new physical science teacher is
"'totally cool" and that be has
made two A 'I on the last two
quiu.es. Sock on the (manly)
shoulder.
• A girl who bu gone to six
high schools in the put four
years report~ that 1he1l be
moving again. and thanks me for
the help. Mep-bug.
• Asian f atber finally agrees
to go to counseling with his
daughter. who is driving him
nuts with punk dresses and
alienated behavior. Hug the
father. Pat the angry daughter's
shoulder. Father then cries.
As I think about these situa-
tions, and how they could be
misconstrued, my heart aches
for several people. First of ~
I fear for the little children who
have tough home lives, and who
may now be deprived of physical
a.ff ection from cautious teachers.
Aho, I could weep for educators
who are already detached from
the kids~ and who will move even
f wther away after reading the
legal implications of a touch.
Particularly, I grieve for educa-
tors like me, who have a lot of
love to give. and may be getting
paranoid about giving it.
Do I worry about a lawsuit'?
Sure, rm concerned. But u I
told my princip~ I'm going to
keep right on bugging. And then
I gave him a rib-crusher.
He said be needed one.

Presidential political circus 1988: Harvey tells all
Harbor Area residents will be rolling up the 1987 rug
this weekend and getting out their 1988 calendan.
Without -a doubt the biggest event on the nation's list
of events is the upcoming presidential election.
It seems alniost a pity that we can't get to there from
here without going through what has become the greatest
show on earth. With election day a little over ten months
down the road, the country has already begun to get
a little numb from the lengthy, and extremely expensive,
campaigning that has been going on since the day after
the last batch of ballots was counted.
Iowa will hold its caucus in three short weeks. Whole
herds of Democratic candidates arc marching through
that state looking for a nod from the party faithful to
fuel their campaigns, and campaign coffers, into New
Hampshire. The Republicans arc marching too, but their
herd is a little smaller.

After New Hampshire, the field will move on down
south for Super Tuesday. No relation to the Super Bowl,
but hyped by the media in about the same proportion,
the great event will make or break political fortunes
as over half the delegates to the national conventions
arc tallied in and locked down.
End of an era at Oas is Center
The presidential circus costs a great deal of money
in a nation which is looking at iCs deficit in horror and
haggling over where to make spending cuts. Matching
funds are the name of the presidential political game.
Tax-payers designate that SI of their taxes to go pay
for the campaigns of candidates who can prove they
are viable by raising enough money to allow them to
dip into the fund to pay bills for everything from political
mailings to balloons to television time.
Apparently American taxpayers are marking those
little boxes and making money available to candidates
in record numbers, since the bills for electing our
president are reaching record levels. It seems to be a
good system for raising money.
Since it works so well, let's designate $1, or even $10,
from every tax return to reduce the deficit. No matching
funds are needed. just resolve.
And maybe there's a presidential candidate out there
who would like to designate his matching funds to the
deficit cause. It seems to us a gesture that could speak
louder than all the television time those dollars might
have purchased.

CdM beats -Sonora In Coast Classic
BY GEORG.I PAPPAS ThiJ13S may be beginning to
turn around for Corona del Mar
High 's cagoen.
CdM downed Los Alamit~
61-51 and Sonora, S0-33 in the
fi.nt tow rounds of the Coast
Christmas Cl&ssic this put
week.
The Sea Kings will continue
to play in the tournament this
week.
Cd M's first game after the
tournament is against Irvine
High School on Jan. 6 at 7:30
p.m.
The Sea Kings(7-3) used
def cnse to stop Los Alamitos.
CdM 's center Brain Spratt held
Los Alamitos• big man 6-9 Dre
Lamoureux to 12 points.
... Jn the last two games we've
played very well defensively,"
commented CdM Coach Paul
Orris. "Def ensc and patient on
off ensc have the two things I've
been emphasizing. If they were
going to bcal us it would have
to be with somebody besides
Brett Pagett or Dre
Lamoureux." Orris said.
Los Alamitos• Pagett was held
to IS points by a combination
of Marc Luescbrink and Jeff
Oark.
Los Alamitos were ahead 16-
J• after one quarter but the Sea
Kin~ led b) the shooting of
junior Matt Cwicrtoia went on
21 -12 run. Cwcinnia scored 11
points in the the second quarter

19 points_ CdM led 35-26 at the
half.
ln tbe third quartet', CdM
staved off a rally by Los Ala-
mitos and led .t&-35 goin1 into
the final period.
Point guard Geoff Probst ( 12
points) diRctcd CdM•s offense,
feeding passes and setting up
shots in addition to play touib
def cnsc. Probst nailed five of
seven free throw attempt late in
the fourth period to seal the
game.
...This game was our first real
four quarter game,'"Orris stated.
""We played good all four quar-
ters. All season we've played
good ball with everybody but we
always have one quarter where
we would let down and take
oursefves out of the game. In
past games we got tentative in
the third quarter but we hung
tough this time," Orris said.
Spratt also added 14 points
and a strong rebounding effort.
"With the start of league just
around the corner, we oced to
start making the plays and rising
to the occasion like we did
tonight, .. Orris added.
The Sea Kings started
slowly against Sonora as they
only hit 2 of I 6 shots from the
Ooor. The score was tied at nine
after one quarter.
But Cd M point guard Probst
again ignited the Sea Kinp as
they wait OD a 21-8 nm. Probst
scored 11 points in the leCODd
quarter including • tbRe pointer

Spratt had 14 pointa and Matt
Herrington added 1 I points.
Spratt also grabbed nine
rebounds.
CdM kept up the presswc in
the second half as Spratt and
Herrington continued to score.
Sonora•s sbootcn were cold
until the fourth quarter when
Gene Metzger bit two three
pointen but it was too little too
late.
CdM led 39-21 after the third
quarter as Sonora was held to
four points.
The Sea K.inp managed to
keep the ball away from Sonora
in the wan.in& minutes of the
game by passin& the ball and
waiting for the right 1hot. When
Sonora fouled CdM to try to
regain possession. Probst and

Harbor cagers stumble in tournament
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
Newport Harbor Higb's bas-

trouble in the Canyon Tourna-

The Sailors were off to pretty
good start this season, but they
have lost their last two games.
Harbor couldn't keep up with
Mc At.eer High School from the
San Francisoo area on Saturday
as they lost,S7....0 in the first
round game.
The Sailors dcf eated East
Bakersfield, 56-49 in a consola-

"H we keep playing like th.is

Harbor continues to play in
the Canyon Tournament this
week.
The Sailon trailed much of
the pmc but each time they

emuri.ag them at leMt two or

The ailors were behind 20-
18 at the half and the game
remamed close through the third
period. Harbor's defensive play
kept them in game for the ftnt
three quarters u they effectively
wedged out Mc Ateer's center 6-
6 Tyrone Woods who only bad
nine points.
With 7: 14 left in the fourth
period. Harbor took the lead lS-

But after that it wu all Mo-

points to Harbor's five in the
final quarter. Turnoven and
poor shooting sealed the Sailors·

As an example. both school's
football squads reached the Cl F
playoffs. CdM's team captured
its first Sea View League crown
since 1971 and Cl F playoff bid
since 1983, with a win over
Harbor in the last game of the
season.
Tbe Sea Kings easily downed
Troy High School, 28-7, in the
fint round of CIF playoffs. but
they stumbled apimt Valencia.
16-7 in tbe next game. Quarter·
back Mitch Melbon and running
back Matt Patterson were
CdM·s offensive standouts dur-
ing the season, but it was tough
playing by the Sea King defense,
led by Ray Cook. that was
essential to C d M 's winning
season.
Things seemed to be over for
Harbor after their loss to Cd M,
but they were given a playoff
berth by virtue of their 7-3
season record.
The Sailors proceeded to
shock top ranked Sunny Hills,
31-21 in their first round playoff
game. In their JeCOnd round
game, the Sailon out played

opponent Irvine High School
could do no wrong as they beat
Harbor, 3-2.
CdM and Harbor met in
another showdown in the CIF
water polo fmals. The Sailors
began the season as a long-shot
for reaching the CIF playoffs, let
alone the finals. Harbor picked
up steam near the end of the
season, as they captured the Sea
View League tjtle by downing
CdM.
Harbor again beat the Sea
Kings. 10-8, to take the CIF title.
The SaiJors were led by Chris
Oeding who poured in seven
goals during the game, and the
strong defensive playing of
goalie Jim Wagner, with 10
blocked shots.
Both schools' cross country
teams also fared well.
Harbor's girt•s sqwld took tbc
Division II state championship
after easily winning the Cl F title.
The Sailors w«e led by runners
Stacy Pando and Kim Robin-
son. On the boy•s team, Jim
Gecrlings finished in fourth
place at the state meet.
CdM•s boy•s team missed
taking the state championship as
the Sea Kings finished in second
place. Eddie LaYCUe finished in
sixth place to lead CdM.
CdM•s tennis team easily won
the Sea View League title and
reached as far as tbe semi-finals
of the CIF playoffs before losing
to LA Westlake. 12~.
CdM•s butetball team is
struggling to regain its title as
Sea View League champs. Last
season the Sea Kings reached as
far the semi-finals of the CIF
playoffs. Unfortunately. this
season the Sea Kings only have
one starter from last year's team,
guard Geoff Probst. Probst also
happens to be the Sea Kings'
leading scorer this season.

I am more aware of a sense

CHRISTA cit
GERRY LONG
Once In A Lifetime
$125,000 EXclusion
One of our clients talked to his bank trust officers about
selling his home. He was told that he would have $90.000
taxable income from the sale of his current residence.
We checked it out with our tax accountant and he pointed
out that our client's trust officer had failed to take into con·
sideration the cost of his replacement home. The amount of
this sale also reduces the taxable profits from the safe of the
first home.
As it turned out our seller had no taxable consequence
from selling his home.
If you are unsure of such matters, do not leave them to
chance. Have a qualified accountant or attorney look into
such financial or legal matters. Often sellers are reJuctant to
spend two or three hundred dollars for a sessjon with a
specialist only to end up making a decision which costs
them tens of thousands of doUars.
Don 't be penny wise and pound foolish.

50,000 Circulation In the Harbor Area
Some newspapers deliver copies to a wide range of cities, including Laguna
Beach, Fountain Valley or Huntington Beach. Which is fine-unless you're a local
realtor who does business in the Harbor Area.
H you are, and if advertising in your immediate neighborhood is important to
you, then The Newport Ensign and The Costa Mesa News offer a hometown
advantaRC. That's because we distribute our real estate section only in Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa, ~nd no place else. So your advertising is seen by 110,000
readers in YOUR immediate market.
The people who will buy homes from you. And list with you ..
Advertising to cities you don't do business in just doesn't make sense. Or cents.
The Hometown Advantage.
