,BUSHED HM8 * 40TH YEAR* NUM8EA 28 * (714) 831-8120 *NEWPORT BEACH'S ONLY HOMEBASED NEWSPAPER* THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1988
BY ROGER •LOOM
Last weet'I deadline for filing state-
ments of intent to run for state offices
brought potential candidates out into
the open, and Assemblyman Gil Fer-
guson (R-Ncwport Beach) seems to be
attracting the largest crowd of chal-
lengers.
Persons who filed statements of
intent have until March 11 to make a
final decision on whether to run,
according to the registrar's office.
Ferguson, who represents the 10th
Assembly District, faces a potential
challenge from within his own party
from both Newport Beach City Coun-
cilwoman Evelyn Hart and slow growth
activist Mike Mang of Laguna Beach.
On the Democratic side in the 10th
AD, Mike Gallups of San Juan
Gov. signs
Bergeson
road bill
Capistrano, president of tbc Saddlc-
back Valley Educators Association,
filed a statement of intent.
In the 69th Assembly District, incum-
bent Nolan Frizzelle (R-Costa Mesa)
will not face a primary challenge, 'but
two Democrats are eyeing a race against
him: Mary Fennell of Huntington
Beach, a psychiatric social worker; and
David Warner, president of the Hun-
t i ngton Beach Union High School
District board.
In the 3Sth State Senate District, Sen.
John Seymour (R-Anabeim) will be
unopposed in the primary. Democrat
Mike Balmagcs, an attorney, bas filed
bis intent to oppose Seymour in
November, as bas Peace and Freedom
Party perennial candidate Maxine Bell
Quirk.
Sen. Marian· Bergeson (R-Newport
Beach) will also have a free ride in the
primary in the 37th State Senate
District. But, Patricia McCabe, a
Huntington Beach accountant, has filed
to run against her in the general
election, along with the Libertarian
Party's J. Mark Sugars.

The spring-like weather of the past
weekend filled the local beaches and
streets, but without any of the problems
associated with sand, surf and thro1,1gs
of bodies.
It was a "remarkably quiet" weekend,
according to Gordon Recd of the City
Lifeguard Department. Bob Oakley, of
the Newport Beach police, said, "We
arrested 70 adults, which is pretty
normal for a heavy tourist period."
He said most of the arrests were for
drunkenness and fighting and that there
' twerc no major crimes reported over the
holiday weekend.
"'We bro ught in four extra policemen
for the weekend," said Oakley, "but
they were mostly used for cruising
control. Our major problems over the
weekend were traffic and parking . .,

a computer. placed at 8th treet and
Balboa Boulevard, into which licen e
numbers arc fed. Anyone pa sing the
checkpoint more than o nce in one hour
is subject to a citation, Oakley
explained.
Reed said that lifeguard problems arc
brouabt on by three factors, ~ater
temperature, air temperature and size
and ferocity of the surf. If any one of
these factors is missing. especially surf,
levels of activity will be much lower.
"The air was warm, running in the
low 70s, but the water was cold, running
between S1 .S and S9 degrees," said
Recd, "and the surf was very low. This
situation resulted in a lot of people
sitting on the sand, but very f cw in the
water."
He said there is usually very little
crime in the Newport Beach area and
that it is seldom necessary to call police.
"There's virtually no cnme on our
beaches," said Recd, "Everybody gets
along real well here. It's very rare that
we need to call the police ...

Fashion favors big, bold looks

quality in the sizes fashions call
for today.
Enhance your pearl necklace

c ers are available in shapes
suited to your tastes-the angu-
lar squares and rectangles, the
softer round oval and teardrop
shapes. No matter the shape it
comes in, a well-cut amethyst
carries its rich color.
Amethyst beads let you drape
~
yourself in purple, in keeping
with the legend of the color of
thfsgem. Bacchus, according to
the story, was slighted and swore
tigers would eat the first person
who crossed his path. A woman
named Amethyst, on her way to
worship at the temple of Diana
was saved from that fate when
Diana turned her to stone. Bac-
chus repented and poured his
wine over the stone, staining it
purple.
Because amethyst is a variety
of quartz, it is one of the more
available gems. Its availability
makes this beautiful gemstone
affordable even in bigger sizes.
Designers use it in bracelets
and rings, as well as for neck-

Youth defies shakedown ring
BY BILL HARVEY
Juan Cordova, a Pomona
School student, has proved
beyond a doubt that a 4-foot-
11-inch boy can win out over
four six-foot boys with some
help from his friends, and in the
process be won an Outstanding
Citizen Award from the Villa
Nova Restaurant in Newport
Beach.
Juan's friends include Pom-
ona School Principal Sandra
Bundy and Officer Dennis Jef-
coat of the Costa Mesa police.
~ According to Jefcoat, Juan
was one of many Pomona stu-
dents being victimized by a
group of four tccnaged extor-
tionists led by a 12-ycar-old
Pomona student. Though their
names arc being withheld by
police because of their ages, one
of the four is identified as a 6-
f oot-2-i nch, 240-pound
"enforcer."
Their methods were quite
simple. The 12-ycar-old would
choose victims and the four
older boys would extort money
from the victims by threatening
to beat them up.
"In one case,.. said Jefcoat,
"these guys confronted Juan, so
he ran across the street and into
someone's house. The four fol-
lowed him right into the house
and started ·to beat on him
there."
Jefcoat, of the CMPD's West
Substation, said the problem
came to his attention when Juan
A tale If Europt
went to Bundy with the proble~.
"I met with Juan at the
school,.. said Jefcoat, "'but he
was reluctant to talk to me. After
we talked for a f cw hours, not
only did Juan tell me about what
was going on, but be also talked
his f ricnds into coming in and
talking to me ...
Armed with the information
brought forth by Juan and his
friends, Jefcoat brought charges
against three of the boys.
... As soon as the three were
arrested, the remaining two went
around and threatened some of
our witnesses, so we arrested
them as well, and charged them
with witness tampering," said
Jefcoat.

A security gap
Although the Federal Aviation Administration is
moving to close gaps in airline and airport security, the
system is still far from what it ought to be. So says
Steve Gardella, who retired last September as security
chief for Pacific Southwest Air~es.
Gardella's sober conclusion is especially disquieting
because many security experts, like himself, are retiring
and aren't being replaced by cost-conscious airlines.
Indeed, most domestic carriers don't employ professional
security advisers, pref erring instead to assign this
important responsibility to ad91inistrators who have
other duties. Small wonder that security procedures are
so lax.
That laxity was exposed last fall by undercover federal
inspectors who visited 136 airports and were able to
sneak mock weapons through security checkpoints 28
percent of the time. These alarming results were
essentially the same as the ones discovered during spot
checks conducted earlier in the year.
Domestic security alarms sounded two months ago
when a disgruntled former USAir employee smuggled
a gun on PSA Flight 1771 , which crashed and killed
all 43 persons aboard soon after shots were fired on
the plane. It's assumed that he eluded security by flashing
his identification card, which should have been
confiscated when he was discharged. Perhaps he was
merely waved through by a careless security guard.
Whatever the case, it points to the crying need for tighter
security procedures.
To be sure, no security system is foolproof. But there
arc several obvious steps that could plug some of the
more glaring gaps. For example, Gardella would have
each airline employ a qualified security official. He would
create a national airline-airport identification system to
permit immediate veriftciation of an employee's ID card.
He would establish a national training academy for
security personnel and pay them higher salaries to offset
the high turnover rate. And he would upgrade and
coordinate airline-airport security procedures with
newer, more effective screening devices and computers.
These improvements could be financed by reinstituting
the security surcharge that was a part of airline tickets
until the early 1970s. Surely, passengers wouldn't mind
paying an additonal dollar or so for their tickets with
the understanding that the money was being used for
passenger safety and to make it harder for some maniac
to smuggle a weapon aboard.
There is no excuse for lax security by airlines and
airports. The means to combat airborne terrorism are
readily at hand, and they should be employed to the
fullest.

Who really cares~bout NB?
It was a week when those who
truly love Newport Beach took
a bard look at the city•s past,
its present and its future. At two
fascinating metings, the city's
responsible pioneers and present
community leaders shared the
joy of mingling together,
reminding themselves just who
created this wonderful town, and
how.
One night, the Newport Beach
Historical Society met in the
lovely Sherman Library
Gardens to preview a remark-
able 16-minute video tape on the
history of the city and the
development of Newport Har-
bor. This is the first video
produced by the society, and
what makes it so unusual is the
way the society and its video
consultants could combine aging
still photos with old movie
footage and recently filmed
color movies to make a dramatic
and authoritative video.
Two night later, the prctent
and future of the city were
reviewed and f orecut at the
Seventh Annual Mayors'
Dinner, sponsored by Speak Up
Newport (SUN), in the ballroom
of the Newport Marriott Hotel.
Like the Historical Society
gathering in the Sherman

push for a special election to
recall the entire board, accord·

What is incredible about this
whole sequence of events is that
at the time of that article, the
School Board had not even
voted on the principal change,
and yet Theriot wanted to recall
all seven of them. What is even
more incredible is that, as of that
time, Theriot bad not talked to
(Superintendent) Dr. (John)

either principal on the issue.
Now, for a guy who likes to
beat himself self-righteously on

ultimate cue of the pot calling

It seems to me that Theriot
suffers from an acute case of

to grab a headline to further bis

Doctors in
a squeeze
Dear Edffor:
Treatment of the sick poor is
approaching collapse in Orange
County. Over the centuries, as
physicians, we have absorbed
the cost of caring for the poor.
Currently, we are asked in
Orange County to support the
Indigent Medical Service,
because the county and the state
have given up on funding care
for the destitute.
Unfortunately, our
reimbursement from Medicare,
frozen for the last three years,
is now being cut again. As this
federal funding has subsidized
our care of the poor in the past,
we arc now faced with two
options: (I) laying off staff,
accepting a further reduction in
our standard of living, and
providing sub.standard care or
(2) getting o ut of medicine and
seeking a ca1eer that reimburses
our energies, befits our intclli·
gcnce, and rewards our efforts.
Physicians enjoy caring for
their patients. Shifting the cost
of unreimbuned care of the.poor
to the middle class and their
insurers has dramatically
inflated health care costs. This
cannot go on. Unfortunately.
due to the utter disdain and
contempt shown physicians by
Medi-Cal, it is uneconomic to
continue seeing patients
.. funded" (i.e. not paid) by Medi·
Cal.
Funding unreimbursed care of
poor patients, or watching ser·
vice to the poor degenerate to
the level of socialized medicine
in Russia and Poland (i.e. non-
care), is the political decision for
Orange County today. Squeez-
ing the doctors even further will
cause a massive opting out of the
system.

Harbor stUns Tustin as· seasOn ends
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
Newport Harbor's basketball
team finished a frustrating sea-
son in a big way with an upset
win over Tustin, 65-46, this past
week .
T he Sailors (3-7, 15-11 ), out of
contention for a C IF playo ff
spot, were simply playing for
pride.
Despite this sea son being
another losing one for Harbor,
there were some bright spots.
Mike Nguyen led the way with
18 points as he sank 9 of 14 shots
from the field. Nguyen played
with a sprained ankle.
Harbor used strong playing
on defense to beat Tustin.
Tustin 's leading scorer Leo
Parker was held to 14 points by
Harbor's Jim Geerlings.
Tyler Koon scored 15 points
as he hit 7 of JO shots. Mike
Hardin scored 14 points and he
dished off six assists.
Tustin went ahead 2-0 but
were behind until they tied the
score at 30 in the third period.
Harbor led 14-8 after the first
qua rter as Nguye n sank six
poi nts and Koon added fo ur.
The Sailors took a 24-19 lead
into halftime.
Harbor went ahead 42-33
after three periods. Drew She-
ward sank a three pointer as the
third period buzzer sounded.
Tustin 's Parker only had two
points in the final period.
The Sailors outscored Tustin
23-13 in the fourth quarter to
win the game.

Stolz Off's shot sinks CdM
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
What a difference a year can
make.
Last year at this time, Corona
del Mar High•s basketball team
was heading into the CIF
playoffs toward one of its more
successful seasons.
But a last second shot by
U niversity•s Steve Stolzoff killed
off the Sea Kings• chances of
reaching post season play again
this season. The Sea Kings
finished with a 3-7 league record
this past week_ and in a three way
tic for last plac.e with Newport
Harbor.
It was an end to a disappoint-
ing season for the Sea Kings.
All season Corona del Mar
Coach Paul Orris had stressed
that it would be an uphill strug-
gle for his team to repeat Jut
year .. success and the University
game seemed underscore his
comments.
Stolzoff's rebound and bank
shot with three seconds remain-
ing in overtime, ended a aee-saw
battle in which the lead cbaqed

"The bi1 difference in the

Physical, defensive play by
both teams dictated the tempo
of the game.
Orris described the contest as
the most physical game he bas
watched in his 18 years of
coaching.
"111 hand it to the players.
Both teams didn't get frustrated
and they didn't lose their com-
pos ure. Maybe the coaches did,"
Orris continued.
••Being a physical game I think
it hurt us a little. We're not a
perimeter team, so we have to
work the ball to the inside.
Going up for the basket and
getting bumped affected us
somewhat," he added.
One example of the rough
play came early in third quarter
when University's Junior Oliver
was knocked down with an
elbow to the mouth. No foul wu
called and later in the period
Oliver returned to the pme.
The Trojans outscored C.dM

as a Sea King with 14 points.
After Probst scored two
baskets, CdM•s Brian Spratt
sank a basket to cut University's
lead to one,41-40.
But Stolzoff responded wit h
a three-pointer. CdM missed a
couple shots and soon they
trailed by 48-42. University then
turned the ball over a couple
times and missed some shots.
Spratt sank a pair of free
throws and Matt Herrington
scored a basket to give CdM the
lead, S2-SO with a little over a

Wetzel used the same program secs playing time at third pase see any way we can beat Rancho Rival coaches couldn't have
been overjoyed by Orange Coast
College's return to community
college men's volleyball last
season after a four-year absence.
Playing in the same South
Coast Conference that saw the
Pirates finish first four times in
five years from J 979 to 1983
(when the program was cut from
the athletic budget), all the 1987
Pirates did in SCC action was
win alJ 16 matches it played in
and record a 48-5 mark in games
played.
Coach Bob Wetzel's squad
topped it off by coming back
from the brink of elimination to
beat Long Beach City College in
an exciting five-game match to
decide the Southern Cal Region-
als. In a 3-hour, 20-minute
marathon, Long Beach led 14-
10 in game three, up 2-0 in the
match. The Vikings served five
times for the title after first
committing a service fa ult for the
match the first time. Five times
the Bucs thwarted their oppo-
nent, finally pulling it out, 16-
14, and going on to the cham-
pionship.
Since there were no Northern
Cal Regionals, the victory over
the Vwnp meant that in one
season, OCC bad returned to the
top of the state in men'• volley-
ball.
In spite of losing SCC "Player
of the Year" Brain Lewis,
conference first learners Scott
Lindquist and Curt Moothart
and second team pick Paul
Cook, Wetzel says the Pirates
will be even stronger in 1988.
The Pirates opened their sea-
son in a scrimmage tournament
at Long Beach City, going unde-
feated in their five-team pool
and advancing to the finals,
where they lost to the Vikings.
OCC was second in the same
tourney last year.
"That's okay, we're right
where we want to be," says
Wetzel. "It isn't to good to play
too wen this early."
"We're much bigger this year,
we've got six guys 6-4 or better,"
says Wetzel. "We're stronger, we
hit harder and weve got much
more depth."
That's the good news. The bad
news is that everyone else in the
conference should be improved
as well.
OCC's main problem, as it
was last year, is inexperience.
Eleven of its 13 players are
freshmen.
That's why the Pirates' season
didn't begin in January. It began
in August with 4S aspiring

Varnish lady adds Shine to a dying art
BY RALPH RODHEIM
She can be seen daily from any
one of several slips along the
bay, rubbing and polishing,
sanding vigorously, brushing
layer upon layer of varnish as
the fumes waver in the warm
harbor sun.
According to Bill Kitchens,
she's the best thing that's ever
happened to his boat, a Hans
Christian 32. Phil Rychel agrees,
as he stands in front of his
gleaming 40' Alden sloop. "She's
a real pro," says Phil, "worth

"Most of my customers won't
let anybody but me work on
their boats," says Suzanne
Davis, Newport Beach 'a famed
"Varnish Queen." Suzanne is
one of the rare few remaining
experts on the art of wood
varnishing boat trim.
"You can tell when somebody
doesn't know what they're
doing. They'll sand off the
comers and turn comers in the
wrong directions," says Suzanne
in her popular "Save Your Boat"
varnishing seminars. "Before
you know it, your boat docsn 't

She bolds the seminars regu-

The Sailors (2-8,15-11) were

the Sea Kings, who went winless
in league this season, were
beaten by University, 45-30.
Harbor was led by Stacy Giem
who scored 20 points and
handed out seven assists. Giem 's
play improved gradually during
the season. She began to score
more consistently and was the
spark in the Sailors offensive
attack.
Tustin led the Sailors 29-23 at

Tustin 's lead to two, 43-41 , going
into the fourth quarter. Tustin

There's still some life in those IRA
BY KEN TOKASH
IRAs "R.l.P.T' Most people
would agree with this ~pitapb,
believiq Individual Retirement
Accounts (IRAs) now lie dor-
mant behind the gates of the
investment graveyard. But the
truth is, they ace still very much
alive.
True, t hese retirement
accounts have lost their appeal
for most investors as a tax write-
off, but unbeknownst to many,
IRAs still carry an important tax
advantage: Earnings accumulate
tax-deferred. So, before you
bury the thought of making your
annual IRA contribution, make
sure you know all the facts.
Whether or not you are able
to claim an I RA deduction
depends on your income and if
you arc covered by a company
pension plan or KEOGH. (You
are covered by a pension plan
at work as soon u you are
eligible to participate in the
plan-even thouah you may not
yet have .. vested" rights to a
pension benefit.)
If you are not covered by a
pension plan, you may take the
full deduction no matter what
your income level.
If you or your spouse is
covered by a pension plan, you
may take a fulJ IRA deduction
(up to $2,000) if your adjusted
gross income is less than $25,000
for single returns, or less than
$40,000 for joint returns (Single-
income married couples can
deduct up to $2,250.) For cou-
ples who earn between $40,000
and $50,000 and single individ-
uals who earn between $25,000
·and $25,000, a partial d eduction
is allowed. Beyond these income
limits, the deduction is com-
pletely eliminated.
However, even without the
up-front deduction, IRAs
remain a solid vehicle for long-
term savings. Whether you're
eligible for the annual deduction
or not, you can still take advan-
tage of what may be the best tax
shelter available. Earnings
generated by your contributions
accumulate tax-deferred until
wit hdrawn. And tax-free com-
po unding means fast wealth
building.
Consider this example: If
you're in the 28 percent tax
bracket and invest $2,000 annu-
ally in an IRA for 20 ye~ at
an interest rate of 8 percent a
year tax-deferred, your S40,000
total investment will more than
double to $82,369. But if you put
the same $2,000 a year into an
investment earning a taxable 8
percent, at the end of 20 years
you11 have only $75 ,83 l.
A common misconception
about IRAS is that they are
investments themselves, much
like passbook savings accounts
or certificates of deposit. Not
true. An IRA is merely a
..wrapper" for an investment, or
group of investments, which
carries particular retirement
plan restrictions (such as the rule
that fund generally cannot be
withdrawn before age 59 ~ with-
out penalty.)
get all the tax-uvin1 benefits,
your funds should stay ia the
IRA until you need them during
retirement. However, you can
withdraw funds at any time. But
prior to age S9~, you may be
penalized 10 percent of the
amount you withdraw, plus the
full income tax on that amount.
This penalty can be avoided,
however, if you plan ahead and
set up a periodic withdrawal
program based o n your life
expectancy.
And finally, you will need to
keep good records to distinguish
your deductible contributions
from your nondeductible contri-
butions since you won't owe
taxes on the latter amount when
you begin to take withdrawals.
(Some IRAs are et up to segre-
gate your taxable versus nontax-
able contributions. Check with
your Financial Consultant.)
Busines s Briefs
Yo u may put your 1 RA funds
into one o r more pecific inve t-
ments including stocks, bonds,
mutual funds. unit trusts and
limited partnerships, and your
earnings on these investments
are held completely tax free until
withdrawals begin.
In hort. even though you may
not realize the immediate benefit
of an IR A (i.e .• tax deduction)
over the long run you can profit
from tax-deferred growth.
Through the di cipline of con-
tributing to your I RA ever}
year. you'll be far ahead of the
game when you retire.

Miriisfering to ttte Aeeds of young d laine
BY PEGGY DARNELL
After spending one Sunday at
Juvenile Hall in Orange with
Sister Cathy Vallejo, CSJ-a
day that included Mass with
Father Brendan Smith for the
juvenile detainees-it became
apparent bow deep the needs of
these tee-nagers are. They stay
in a locked facility while their
future is determined through the
justice system.
"Because of the numbers,"
explained Sister Cathy, "any
k.ind of personal attention from
someone •outside' is especial)y
we lcome. Everything. here must
be done in a regimented fashion
and as effeciently as possible.
This does not leave much time
INSIGHTS
for individual attention. That
comes from our volunteers. One
of the main things we ask them
to do is to be able to listen with
an open mind, despite the cir-
cumstances that brought the
teen-agers here. Our volunteers
are extremely important to us
and to the kids. They help to
challenge the incarcerated, to see
beyond their present circum-
stances. Their personal pastoral
presence is most appreciated by ·
the teens they visit.
.. , want to emphasize that we
minister to all people. The
Catholic Detention Minist ry
provides an o pportunity for
Christians to explore what Jesus
says throughout the Gospels: to
reach out in unconditional love
to others. It is about journeying
with others through advocacy,
direct service and education."
COM has volunteers who
come f rom Dana P oint, Laguna
Beach, Corona del Mar and
Newport Beach. One of the
board members is Kay Williams
of Newport Beach. Williams
states, .. the need is great for
people to visit these kids, and
it matters a lot to them when
someone .shows an interest in
them. I have been going for over
a year now, and it has been an
important part of my life, too.
We encourage others to consider
the J uvcnile J usticc system as a
way to help those in need.

"I received a letter I'd like to
share with you that reminds us
that these arc people with feel-
ings and needs, who are locked
away, who suffer loneliness,
sorrow, remorse, rejection ,
anger, fear, anxiety-all seeking
to understand themselves and
others ... all reaching out crying
for help, kindness and love, "said
Sister Cathy.
The letter to Sister Cathy was
signed with the prisoner's
number but speaks for a lot of
the inmates, both young offend-
ers and adults, male and female.

also a need that is being more
often requested.
Music is also needed for praise
services, keeping in mind that
.. singing is praying twice." Bibles
arc needed; they often bring
comfort to one who is incarcer-·

.. We can always use prayer for
all who suffer, who need God's
grace and unconditional love,
both for victim and offender,"
said Sister Cathy.
These juvenile off enders do
not need to stay in the justice
system, and some aenuinc, lov-
ing attention could be the key
to stopping them before they go
any further.
"We are seeking," commented
Sia&er Cathy, "people wbo can

that 11 arn d I
Lilt Wednesday I left my car idlllla in the prqc while I ran
into the houae to arab some
hum11ebis. Sometimes my fancy
sbOll start pinching at work.
While I was in the house, two
men with odd looks on their
faces came up to my front door.
16Yes?" I said, worried about
being late to work.
16Your car is across the street,"
said one. "It doesn't look good,"
he added unnecessarily.
I looked across the street.
There was my Volvo, purchased
for its alleged body strength,
wedged against our neighbor's
ficus tree.
Here are a f cw things I learned
that day.
I have never actually been

"numb with shock." I became a
pillar of salt as I looked at the
Volvo. I was dumstruck:. Some
neighbors came running over to
see why my car was sideways on
the neighbor's lawn. I could
merely point to the car, shake
my bead, and throw up my
hands. I finally got in the car,
noting in a detached way that
it was drivable, and went to
work.
Insurance is a good thin& to
have. I practically had a fit when
I paid my last premium (right
during Christmas, of course),
but it now appeared that these
bloodthirsty folks would pay to
have the car fixed. As the
appraiser clucked and wrote on
bis notepad, I kept asking the
same piteous question.
Rabies clinic slated
"Do I really only have to pay
the deductible? Really?"
I needed to go over and over
that issue, like a cow chewing
her cud. I learned that what it
said on my premium was true.
However, I didn't ask bow much
my rates would go up. In my
fragile state, I could only handle
one thing at a time.
A neighborhood, low-cost
anti-rabies vaccination clinic
will be held on Thursday, Feb-
ruary 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.,
at the Fire Station, 868 Santa

F ami.liea who enjoy entertain-

home in the Harbor View
Homes neiahborhood in Corona
del Mar. It ii a tuteful and fme
quality remodel, vacant and
ready for immediate move-in.
"Whoever moves into this
home can throw a party the next
day," said GelTJ Lona of Loap
of Newport, agent for the home.
.. It's bright and cheerful, and 100
guests would easily feel comf or-
table on the large patios while
enjoying the view."
"LIKE NEW" FEELING
The home is about 25 years
old with newly added '80s amen-
ities. The ingredients of a .. like
new" home are in abundance,
including fresh paint inside and
out, new carpets, new door and
window trim, new sliding glass
doors, new bath fixtures, out-
door electric fixtures and totally
new kitchen appliances,
cabinets, tile flooring and coun-
tertops and bay windows. All of
the window, door trim, molding
and crown molding and wains-
cotting arc 100 percent oak.
An immense feeling of privacy
is apparent in this home. Guests
enter from the front of the home
through gates into the court-
yard. There the magic unfolds.
The courtyard is a profusion of
color with the brick planter
boxes full of flowen, the cabana
hung with floral baskets in every
color. Brick benches enable
guests to relax and enjoy the
outdoon.
SPACIOUS AND BRIGlff
Double doors take guests into
the bright white-tiled entry. A
clear skylight accounts for the
brightness. Mirrored walls open
up the area.
To the left of the entry is the
spacious living room. A central
focal point in this room is the
gas fireplace, situated right in the
center, allowing guests to enjoy
it from all four sides. A window
wall facing the ocean takes
utmost advantage of the s~
ular view. One comer bu been
designated as the formal dining
area, with a chandelier waiting
to hang over a dining room
table. The ceiling is open beamed
of bleached wood.
The living room could be
called very venatile. It is large
and can be broken up into
several different areas. One
comer contains built-in book-
shelves and can be UICd u a
reading nook. Another comer
can be a conversation area,
centered around the fireplace. A
wet bar is located near the
formal dining area. No matter
where one sits in this room, the
view can be enjoyed. A sliding
glass door leads to the inside
courtyard, and another on the
window wall leads to the rear
patio.
A KITCHEN TO LOVE
The kitchen is accessible either
from the living room or off the
entry hall. This is a room that
the whole family will enjoy. The
white tile floor from the entry
is continued in here. A breakfast
area contains a large bay win-
dow with a large enough shelf
for displaying plants. Storage is
abundant in the kitchen with a
large double pantry. White
ceramic tile coven the counter-
tops. The double oven is wall
mounted, and the upper oven is
a microwave. The range is elect-
ric. The bay window in front of
the sink looks out over Newport
Beach and the ocean. Coffered
ceilings in the breakfut area and
kitchen open the rooms up.
FAMILY RETREAT
The family room is situated
off the kitchen and also takes
advantage of the view. A slidina
door leads to the patio. The
room has two attractive features
in addition to its large size. Oak
wainscotting surrounds the
perimeter of the room. The
coffered ceiling bas bleached
wood panels which conceal the
indirect lighting.
The laundry room is through
a sliding wood door off the
family room.
The wing with the four bed-
rooms extends from the entry
hall. A guest powder room is
located at the beginning of the
long ball. The hall bu one wall
with windows facing the court-
yard. A 11idina door provides
access from thit wina. At inter-
vals, there are closets with
•lidina mirrored doon all rm-
ilbed inside with custom cloeet
oraanizen.
The three bedrooms all have
sliding mirrored closets with
organiz.en and larae windows to
make it bript. All of the win-
dowa are trimmed in oak and
have larae sills for plants. A large
bathroom off the ball is shared
by these rooms. It bu a drcuing
area with long oak pullman with
white ceramic tile countertops
and double sinks with brass
fixtures. A separate room con-
tains the toilet and glassed-in
shower. .
The master bedroom and bath
is located at the end of the hall
through double oak doors.
Three wardrobes offer the max-
imum in storage. Two are sit-
uated at the entry to the room,
and the other is in the bedroom.
The bath is a study in luxury
with large pullmans, tile coun-
ters, a flip-up vanity area and
double sinks. Step down into the
tile glassed-in shower tub for
soaking away the tensions of the
day.
READY FOR THAT
PERSONAL TOUCH
The current owners have
made it pouible for anyone to
move in and give the home their
own penonal touch. The carpetl
are a light beiae, all of the
windows and slidina doon are
outfitted with custom drapes,
mini blinds or vertical blinds, all
in colon that will blend with any
color of furniture and decor.
This is a home made for
entertaining. The courtyard is
ideal for spa. It wraps around
~o the rear patio, where the view

Another bonus the home
offen is the three-ar garage
with abundant storqe. A large
skylight lets in light for working,
and the floor has been painted
with green tennis court paint.

50,000 Circulation in the Harbor Area=
110,000 Local Readers
Some newspapers deliver copies to a wide range of cities, including Laguna
Beach, Fountain Valley or Huntington Beach. Which is fine-unless you're a local
realtor who does business in the Harbor Area.
If you are, and if advertising in your immediate neighborhood is important to
.you, then 'I'he Newport Ensign and 'I'he Costa Mesa News offer a hometown
advanta~e . That's because we distribute our real estate section only in Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa, and no place else. So your advertising is seen by 110,000
readers in ·YOUR immediate market.
The people who will buy homes from you. And list with you.
Advertising to cities you don't do business in just doesn't make sense. Or cents.
