BY ROGER BLOOM
Supervisor Thomas Riley endorsed
Irvine City Councilman David Baker
for the Republican nomination in the
40th Congressional District, bringing
charges from the campaign of Nathan
Rosenberg that the Republican leader-
ship is tryina to tilt that contest Baker's
way.
.. I have watched Dave Baker over the
last decade and 1een his commitment
to the community, his work with
charities," said Riley in making the
endonement.

The city's plan to widen Pacific Coast
Highway from five lanes to six and to
install a sound wall along the ocean side
of the highway in West Newport Beach
has been disapproved by the California
C~astal Commission after it heard
testipiony from residents of the area
that the community did not want a wall,
according to Bob Joseph of the Coastal
Commission.
.. At this point, we can do nothing but
stop the project, and try to get back
on the Coastal Commission agenda
with a revised wall plan,.. said Don
Simpson of the Newport Beach Public
Works Department, "Because the wall
is required by the federal government,
we have only three alternatives. We
either build a wall in conjunction with
widening the highway, or we obtain
signatures from l 00 percent of the
people impacted by the noise saying
they don't want a wall, or we don't
widen the highway ...
The federal government was to pay
$6.8 miJlion of the expected $8 million
cost of the project, according to
Simpion.
"The only part we had to pay was
for the new lighting ...
One of those who do not wa.nt a wall
is Ninfa 011rien, who lives on the inland
side of PCH.
At a meeting between residents and
Simpson, 011ricn said a wall would
interfere with her view of the ocean.
Another person in attendance. who
identified himself only as a resident of
the beach side of PCH, said that
because the inland side of the area is
flat, he dido 't sec where there was a
view with which to interfere.
.. If you stand in the middle of the
street and look straight down you can
sec the sand, and sometimes a life guard
stand, and if tidal conditions arc just
right, sometimes we can sec spray."
responded O'Brien.
In an attempt to appease residents
of the area. what was originally planned
to be a stark, JO-foot masonry wall bas
been redesigned to be part wall, part
man-made landscaped mounds and
part foliage. According to Simpson, the
original I 0-foot height. a sore point
with some resider.ts, was arrived at by

Crime in Newport
jumps 1 O percent
BY BILL HARVEY
Crime is up in Newport Beach with
the two major increases being in the
areas of grand th cf t and rape, but the
police department is aware of the
increase and is working to bring the
problem areas under control, according
to Bob Oakley of the Newport Beach
police.
Statistics released by Lt. Don
Chandler, Management Services
Commander for the police department.
indicated that crime was up 10.6 percent
in the .. seven major off cnscs,.. with
burglaries being the only major cate-
gory to show a decrease. In 1986, there
were 1,067 burglaries. and in I 987 there
were 1,043, a decrease of 2.2 percent.
Grand thefts (more than $400) rose
from 962 to 1.210. an increase of 248
offenses, or 25 .8 percent.
"We attribute the increase in grand
thefts to much higher activity in thefts
from autos," said Oakley, .. There's a
huge market for car parts presently. As
an example. 11 sets of T-tops were
st olen in o ne night in Park Newport.
despite full time security guards and
locked gates. Car burglaries in general
have been a big problem this year ...
Oakley said the police department
has put on extra patrols to deal with
car burglaries. but stated, .. Car burglary
is a consistent problem that is very hard
to deal with. because there is no
consistent pattern ...
There were 15 rapes reported in
Newport Beacti in 1986 and 25 in 1987.
an increase of ten offenses. or 66. 7
pcn::cnt.
.. We believe the increase in reported
rapes is attributable to public aware-
ness," said Oakley ... and is the result
of education about the crime. While
there may be a slight increase or
decrease in the number of rapes. we feel
that these statistics indicate that more
women are reporting rapes rather than
enduring the crime and saying nothing
because of fear or shame ...
Statistics released by the department
indicated there was a sinak murder in
1986 and one in 1987. Robberies totaled
45 in '86 and 49 in '87. an increase of
8.9 percent. Felonious auaults were up
from 110 to J 18. an increue of 7 .3
pen:en~ and auto tbefta went from JOO
to 319. an i.ncreue of 6.l pm:cnt.
There ~ a total of 2,500 reported
crimes in 1986 and a total of 2. 765 m
1987, an increMC of 26S crimes, or 10.6
percent.

The blue-green of the tranquil
ocean is the cok>r of the aqua ma·
ine. Considered a talisman by
sailors, aquamarine carries the
gentled power of the oceans. Set
with diamonds it takes on the
intensity of a crisp Icy morning
of polar waters; set In aold it car-
ries the warmth of the equato-
rial sun. Aquamarine is well
suited to interestin1 desi1n
possibilities because it is avail-
able in fine quality In large stzes.
A new way of cutting colored
gems, called the "fantasy cut/'
has been employed by notable
designers to make very special
creations. An aquamarine may
be faceted and polished on top
in ways you've appreciated
before. The change is under the
surface, like currents in the
ocean. The cutter cuts into the
stone from behind, allQWing light
to refract in surprisin1 ways. The
fantasy cut is an excitin1 new
possibility for aquamarine, the
birthstone of those born in
March.
I have just returned from the
sprina session of the Pacific
Jewelry Show which was held In
San Francisco last weekend. I
was very plelsed to find some
lovely aquamarine stones at
moderate prices and we are set-
tina them up in rinp and pend-
ants. Two of these are fantasy
cut and I'm anxious to show
them off ... so come in soon and
see these beautiful sems.

Sh9oting from hip
in 401h showdown
The campaign in the 40th Congressional District is
already so hot and heavy that an observer awaking from
a prolonged sleep might believe it is only a week until
the election, not a week until the filing deadline.
The scramble to get ahead of the pack early has
produced some remarkable situations, including the
scheduled appearance of Robert Bork next k ·
support of Christopher Cox, general hyste ·cs o e
part of Councilman John Kelly of Tustin, nd a series
of attacks by the Nathan Rosenberg campaign against
county GOP Chairman Tom Fuentes.
We 're not sure if bringing in big guns from the East
Coast or staking out a position to the right of Herman
Goering are going to help Cox and Kelly, respectively,
but at least those tactics are relatively harmless. On the
other hand, spreading charges about the Republican
leadership and then evading direct questions about those
charges, all in an effort to appear as an outsider on
a white horse and at the same time a member of the
party faithful, seems to us to be not only of limited
political value in the short term, but a destructive and
ultimately self-defeating tactic in the long term.
The matter came into the open this week with the
endorsement of Irvine City Councilman David Baker
by Supervisor Thomas Riley. Rosenberg campaign
consultant David Vaporean -who, incidentally,
engineered Bob Badham 's campaign against Rosenberg
in 1986 in such a way that an offended Rosenberg
withheld his post-primary endorsement of Badh,m until
just before the general election -repeated previous
charges of "bossism" against Fuentes and said that
Fuentes and tfle Republican leadership are favoring
Baker in the primary, violating party rules mandating
neutrality in intra-party contests.
Among other things, Vaporean charged that Fuentes,
et al are promoting Baker as the Republican candidate,
and discouraging other candidates from running.
It was a theme that Vaporean had been sounding in
a less public manner for several weeks. When pressed
in che past to provide details, he would become vague.
Our observation would be that if Fuentes is trying
to discourage other candidates froni running against
Baker, who at last count is facing I 0 other hopefuls,
he is failing miserably.
We would further observe that Supervisor Riley -
and Rep. Badham, who endorsed Baker last week -
are grown men who make up their own minds, and arc
being proved correct in their judgments.

Se& .Kings aim for anothef track _title
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
Corona del Mar High 's track
team is going for their second
straight Sea View League Cham-
pionship this season.
According to Corona del Mar
Coach Jim Tomlin, the Sea
Kings have a good chance of
repeating as champions and arc
the team to beat in the Sea View
League. Cd M went undefeated
in league last season.
"I'm not really sure how good
the teams in our league arc this
year. But I think they arc going
to improved over last year's
Saddlcback should give us some
trouble. They always do," said
Tomlin, in his 11th year as coach
of the CdM's track team. CdM
has captured seven league titles
and bas a record of 83-6-1 record
under Tomlin.
"Univenity has a better team
this season. I don't anticipate
that Estancia or Tustin will beat
us. But Newport Harbor has a
good team which we also have
to watch out for.,.
The Sea Kings haven' lost to
Newport Harbor's track squad
since 1980.
"It would be ever ybody's
dream in the league to knock us
off. I do n •t mean to sound
arrogant, but we have a real
good team and I don't see
anybody in our league beating
us."
The Sea Kings face a tough
pre-season schedule, which be-

Newport Harbor Hip's bue-
ball coach Wayne Heck streued
recently before the start of the
season that strong pitching and
f1eldiq would be the key to bis
team winning games.
The Sailon didn' prove Heck
wrona this past week, defeating
Lquna Hills S-2 and Capistrano
Valley 6-4 in scrimmaF games
mostly through their pitching.
Harbor faces Mission Viejo in
a double-header this Saturday
starting at 11 p.m. in a home
game.
"I don' know much about
them (Mission Viejo), .. Heck
said. 041 know they usually have
bad good teams in the past. Most
of the schools in the southern
part of Orange County have
strong teams. Mission Viejo beat
us in a double-header last year
and we kind of want to even the
score this season."
Defense and pitcbiq is what did
it for UI."
One of Harbor's best bitten,
Tony Wren, who usually plaJI
shortstop, falled in•~
bitter aa•imt Laguna Hills and
Capistrano Valley. Wren is
recovering from a shoulder
IDJUry.
1' ony is bitting the ball real
well, but his throwina arm ia still
sore and its not where it needs
to be. We're hoping be can
return to shortstop before the
start of league, but he's still a
question mark right now," Heck
explained.
The playing of senior Jason
Johnson at second base and
shortstop in the scrimmage
games impressed Heck.
"Jason has been doing reaJ
well. He's been a surprise for us
so far. He's hitting the ball well
and doing a good job in the
field ."
Ensenada race subject of seminar
Both Laguna Hills and Capis-
trano Valley are one of the best
teams in their leagues, the
Pacific Coast and South Coast
Leagues, respectively.
How did Harbor beat both
teams? Very carefully.
Heck also singled out the
playing of Tony Altobelli, a
utility player who bas been
filling in at DH or third base_.
"He's working harder in prac-
tice than anybody else. Tony is
somebody we can turn to when
somebody is hurt and we need
to fill a position."

Harbor pitchen Gary Lind-
berg and Jim Jenninp combined
to shut down Laguna Bills,
while the pitching efforts of Kirk
Summen and Zachary Goemer
helped ~arbor down Capistrano
Valley.
Beck will use tbe same pitch-
ing rotation against Mission
Viejo that he employed in their
two scrimmage pmcs.
"We played really well, espe-
cially our pitching and fielding.
It wu a low key scrimmage. We
didn' really pay attention to the
score, onJy to how well we
played."
But Heck admitted his team
didn' really bit the ball well
during the two games.
"Typically, our pitching is
ahead of where are pitching is
at this time of the year. We're
not bitting the ball well yet.
Heck also mentioned the bit-
ting of leftfielder Brad Z.Cnz.
04Brad has been swinging the
bat real well We definitely need
for him to do that."
' Zenz injured his knee while
diving for a ball •pimt Laguna
Hills and be didn' play in the
Capo Valley pme. Heck said be
thinks it's a muscle sprain and
that Z.Cnz should be back in the
Sailon' line-up for the Miu.ion
Viejopme.
"There •s two things that hurt
us u a team. We donl have a
lot depth in our line-up and we're
not real talented. If we have
good fielding and pitching than
we ha~ a good chance to win,"
Heck remarked.

fashion for men, such a program
is on the must list, particularly
since clothing is so expensive
these days (for example, gone
forever arc the days of SIO
neck:wear-silk ties now range
anywhere from $40 to $60). If
the color selection is wrong, this
is a pretty costly mistake.
For this and other reasons,
Amici's Vice President Ramon
Del Pazo and his general man-
ager, Steve Perry, instituted the
program here, which not only
deals with color, but male phy-
1iopomy. Endo, Ecto and
Maomorphic body types haft
ben around since the beainnin1
of man; but it's fairl_y difficult
for an individual to 1elf-aaalya
which ca&qory be falls into and
which styles arc, therefore,
suitable.
For yean American men have
been accustomed to hearing that
the .. European Cut" wu not
constructed for them, and, u a
consequence, they shied away
from even trying the outfit on.
Well , there is a large body of
consumers in these here United
States, so something bad to give.
The solution was that Europeans
adjusted their designs to accom-
modate the American physique,
with its broader shoulders.
Amici's basically carries styl-
ish European clothes from the
houses of Hugo Boos, Mondo,
Luhta, l'Cortigini, Nino Danieli
and Esco la, to name a f cw that
arc geared for comfort and case.
The store's philosophy in select-
ing such designs is for men to
have fun and enjoy their clo-
thing, not only in their casual

Harold Pinter's •Betrayal" ii
currently showing at ART and
it well may be that like its
predeceuor, "No Exit," the
show will be held beyond its
scheduled closing date.
And for good reason. ART is
tiny and .intimate, the perfect
place for a the artful praenta-
tion of a play that demands close
attention by its audience.
Directed with areat feeling
and skill by Robert Sternberg,
the show is presented without
interruption, a daring decision,
as attention spans in Orange
County tend to be short, but one
that was certainly well founded.
"Betrayal" is a journey back-
ward through time that exposes
the twists, turns and complicated
lies of a love triangle.

the end of her marriage to
Robert (John Turnbull).
Robert and Jerry are belt

a relatiomhip which has been
subtly changed by Jerry's yean-
long dalliance with Emma. The
affair takes place in a flat which
they shared in the afternoons.
Emma bitterly reveals to Jerry
that Robert has become

Dr. Millard MacAdam, a

' idea behind "Beyond Business
As Usual,,, a seminar designed
to apply Biblical principles to the
business world.
"The basic concept came to
me about a year ago," he
recalled. "I became very much
more aware of people in business
who were struggling aroudn
situational ethics. We have
corruption in some of our most
conservative business institu-
tions. There seems to be a
conflict in the human spirit
operating on two levels -talk-
ing one way, wal.kiq another."
So, "Beyond Business As
Usual" is designed to hlep people
in t&e business world identify
and use the Biblical principles of
leadership and management,
with positive results for the
quality of the company's pro-
duct and service to customers.
It is also designed to encour-
age skills that help in conflict
resolution, to free creative ener-
gies, and to help in penonal and
organizational skills, thereby
saving time and money.
The workbook used in the
group includes a very popular
goal-achievement chart, a self-
reflection chart that takes in all
aspects of a person'• life. In
looking at the chart, one can
pinpoint the areas strength and
weakness, what needs more
attention to achieve a desired
outpome. Included are spiritual,
mental, emotional, professional,
comniunity service, financial,
social, recreational, familial, and
physical categories, all useful in
setting goals and determining
what needs to be improved.
Another area that is stressed
is the basic concept of ·the
importance of feedback, and
surveys that can yield a clear
picture of the ditection of the
company and the workers' atti-
tudes towards it, attitudes that This is done by beina kind,

MacAdam also cited Stanley

think of church as a relationship

In closing, MacAdam stated
his goals in "Beyond Business As

"My main interest is to help

It was terrible.
At first I thought it was going
to be an archetypal jog-me
against the clements. It turned
out to be one of the most
frightening things I have ever
done. I started out jogging down
the hill to the beach area. 1 was
flying, with the wind behind my
back. At certain points, the wind
literally pushed my feet out from
under me. I felt like an Olympic
skiicr, slightly out of control, but
going faster than I had ever
gone-breaking through to a
personal best. "What a stud I
am," I thought, sailing. along.
Suddenly I heard crackling. I
As I got down to the beach,
the poles gave way to driving
sand. I had a choice: corneal
abrasions or electrocution.
CdM valedictorian
creates her success
BY KATHERINE NELSON
When Suling Wang found out
that she was valedictorian of
Coro.na dcl Mar High Schoors
ct.SS of 1988, she was simply
"happy."
"I didn' fmd out until people
'-
STUDENT

started telling me," she said. "I
just did what I normally would
have done. It wasn' anything
special like writing an essay or
winning a contest."'
Soft--spoken and elegant, Sul-
ing bas a shy smile that is easily
catching. Anyone who thinks
that all she docs is study could
not be farther from the truth. Art
is an important part of her ·life,
and she spends much of her free
time drawing. She has been
involved in claues such as piano
(eight years of it) and ceramics.
This year she is an important
member of the staff of Corona
dcl Mar High School's "Vision,"
a magazine featuring student
paintin~ drawings, poems and
stories.
"I like art because I like
creating things. It mates me feel
good because it is my own."
As for college plans, Soling
has high hopes.
"I want to go to Harvard," she
said cautiously, "if I get in."
Other universities that have
received her application arc:
Yale, Cornell, Stanford, UCLA,
.
and UC Berkeley (where she bu
already been accepted). Her
major is tentatively set for fine
arts •
So what about the annual
valedictorian address at gradua-
tion?
"I'm not really nervous. I just
don' know what I'm going to
say yet," she joked. "At least 111
have a microphone so people can
hear me."

· Bob Tr.own of Waterfront Homes
c

BY CHEllYL STEHUNG
It isn't often that a buyer of
a home can just move in with
a minimum of fuu, but this
week'• featured home can offer
just that. Located in prestigious
Bia Canyon, one of Newport's
premier nei1hborhood1, this
Broad moor bome bu been com-
pletely remodeled into the Cali-
fornia Contemporary mode with
retextured walls, new
bathrooms, skylights, carpet,
Arizona flagstone floors and
landscaping.
"You don't have to do any-
thing, just move in and live," said
Bob Trown of Waterfront
Homes, Inc., agent for the home.
"Once you arc in the gates, you
arc in your own, private world."
Trown is not only the agent
for the home, he is also a
designer in hit own. right and
pcrf onncd all of the remodeling
innovation on the home.
Because the design is California
Contemporary, any style of
f umiture will blend in.
SECURE AND PRIVATE
Big Canyon is a gate-guarded
community, which offers the
maximum in security. In addi-
tion, the home, which is located
at 19 Royal St. George, has a
highly 1echnical security system
of its own, complete with tele-
vision moniton.
To the aide of the deluxe three-
car ..,.... 11 ·the entry gate to

will be peeted with tropical
peenery in an idyllic settiq. To
the ript of the courtyard ii the
weJcomin1 1pa, with a walkway
leadina to the tarae swimming
pool, patio and grassy yard.
To the left of the courtyard
is the private patio accessible
from ·the hallway and muter
bedroom. Beyond the courtyard
are the sin1le-paned French
doors, leading to the Arizona
flag-stoned entry. Guests will
face the formal dining room with
its window wall facing the pool.
Over the dining table is an
intricate metal-sculptured
chandelier that is a true conver-
sation piece. To the side of the
room is a sliding glass door
leading to the patio.
MANY MIRRORS
AND WINDOWS
The formal living room is to
the right of the entry hall, and
drama is created here with the
use of mirrors, bcrbcr carpet, a
sloping, beamed ceiling and a
cozy conversation pit. One wall
of windows with a sliding glass
door to the patio area aives the
room a light effect. The mirrored
wall creates depth. Guests step

PEACEFUL RETREAT
To the left of the entry is the
hallway leading to the bedroom
wing. A guest powder room
featuring an antique commode
with brass sink and fixtures is
out of the ordinary. At one end
of the ball is another mirrored
wall. Berber carpet is used
continuously here.
In the bedroom wing, planta-
tion shutters arc used on the
windows and sliding doors. All
three bedrooms arc large and
have ample-sized sliding mir-
rored closets. One of the bed-
rooms has a sliding glass door
to the side yard.
Off the hall is the laundry
room, with plenty of storage, an
ironing alcove and high tech
track lighting. A sliding glass
door from the hall leads to a
private patio.
A large bath featuring double
facing pull mans with white
ceramic tile countertops and
double sinks is shared by the
three bedrooms. The bath area
bu a glassed-in shower tub. The
tile on the floor matches the
countertops.
The master suite is a lovely
retreat with many newly added
amenities. Double doors lead to
the bedroom, with 'its expanse
of windows and one mirrored
wall. Double doors lead to the
walk-in cedar closet. In the
dressing area, a built-in cabinet
has a faux goat skin finish. Glass
block separates the dressing area
from the bedroom and gives a
sense of drama. There arc two
facing pullmans with double
sinks and travertine countcr-
tops. White tile is used on the
floor. Another glass block wall
separates the bath area, which
includes a bidet and combina-
tion glasaed-in Roman tub and
shower. Larae windows face a
private cactus garden.

50,000 Circulation in the Harbor Area
110,000 Local Readers
--
Some newspapers deliver copies to a wide range of cities, including Laguna
Beach, Fountain Valley or Huntington Beach. Which is fine-unless you're a local
realtor who does business. in the Harbo-r Area.
If you are, and if advertising in your immediate neighborhood is important to
you, then The Newport Ensign and The Costa Mesa News offer a hometown
advanta~e. That's because we distribute our real estate section only in Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa, and no place else. So your advertising is seen by 110,000
readers in YOUR immediate market.
The people who will buy homes from you. And list with you.
Advertising to cities you don't do business in just doesn't make sense. Or cents.
The Hometown Advantage.
