The layoff' mostly aff ec13 teachers at the secondary level, but the number of retiring teachers at the elementary level made it necessary to reinstate haJf of those teachers, who have an elementary credential, Nicholl said. He is hopeful that more of the 29 teachers on layoff status wilJ be reassigned in the future . .. It is nerve-wracking for the teachers, parents and students, but it is good to be able to bring some of these folks back," said Board President Jim de Boom. One of the programs that will be reinstated in the elementary school is the physical education/ wellness pro- gram, which board member Sherry Loofbourrow said is essential. SmanPsml NEWPORT BEACH Measure A makes sense Dear Edhor: Measure A, the "slow growth initiative,,. is the best chance that we , as citizens of Orange County, will ever have to get a grip on traffic congestion in Orange County. lfwe don't pass .. t t•THENEWPORl'B•M-1 Letters to the Editor this initiative, we should have our beads examined. The initiative will simply require county aovemment to follow the guidelines, standards, and parameters which exist today in the land me planning laws which govern growth and development in Orange County. Unfortunately, the supervison (and city councils) have tended to ignore the guidelines in their land use decisions, with the perennial excuse of "overriding considerations" (such u devel- oper's profits). Thus we have the traffac mess we have today. If the initiative passes, discipline will be restored to the planning process, guidelines will be observed, and traff ac congestion will gradually improve. As a practical matter, the initiative will prevent the super- visors from approvin1 large projects which will overload the present day non-freeway traffic system. The initiative provides that people won't have to wait for more than one light change at an intersection. What's wrong with that? Opponents say that traffic will actually worsen if Measure A passes. What a lot of hogwash. The developers wilJ continue to develop because that is the nature of their business; and with their developments will come traffic improvements, under the terms of the initiative. Developers will just have to learn to live within the parame- ters of land use laws, and pay ·for the traffic congestion which they are causing by improving the roads and intenect.iom. I think that's fair. Taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for road improvements necessitated by harp developments. We should not ignore the other benefits of tbe initiative. With slow growth and leu dense development, we will have cleaner air. Crime rates are lower with less highly urhanimt devel- opment. Property values remain high, and incentive is enhanced for rebuildin1 older areas of the county. Leu traffac, less dense devel- opment, less crime, less smog, high property values. All are created by Measure A. J• D. To attempt to meet the grow- ing demand for softball dia- monds in the area, Newport Beach is opening Bonita Creek Park this week, which contains two state of the art playing fields. Currently, Newport Beach has 14 softball fields, but only three arc adaptable for night games. Both of the softball fields at the Bonita Creek Park, which opens June 6, have lights for night game use. · "We've been waiting for our own city softball facility like this one for a long time," commented Scott Williamson, sports coor- dinator for Newport Beach's Parks, Beaches and Recreation dcpartll)ent. "For years I've heard from people that Newport doesn't have good softball fields· and we 're trying to change that," Williamson added. "What I really like about the park is that we can run four games each night. It will make the program run much smoother." "It (Bonita Creek Park) will probably be the best softball facility in Orange County," h.- addcd. The facility located on the o utskirts of Newport Beach where La Vita and Univenity streets meet, consists of two regulation softball fields equipped with bleachers, dugouts and bat racks, a soccer field, a meeting room which contains space for bathrooms, a concession stand and rooms that will eventually be used for gymnutic classes. Each field also has 28 lipts. The new park will be con- trolled and maintained by the city, which Williamson also views as a major asset. "Every facility we used before was shared and does n't get maintained properly. Some of the fields we med at the local high schools (Newport Harbor), 5 1!1i~lllllllC...M.wlM ..... I. Tiii -...... 111111111 ....... 111111 11111 I -llllt we had no control over. The sprintlen would be left on or we wouldn' told of conflictina events," he added. But parting for the softball facility (109 spaces) may not be enough. .. We're hoping it's enough," Williamson admitted. "People who play at 6:1S p.m. and are leaving, are going to run across those who play in the later games. It could be a problem. People may park in the surroundiq residential streets." The tract of Newport North PllTI ·n IUllY CITA homes is located across from the park. The two softball dia- monds face in opposite direc- tions with area in between the two fields being raised to field level which can provide a clear view of what is goin1 on in both games . .. These are also the fint fields we've had in Newport which are all brick dust. It cuts down on the bad bops. Our other fields are either all grau or a combi- nation of brick dust and grass which ii not u good," William- son added. The project was in the plan- ning stages for five years with construction beginning last May. According to Jeff Staneart, who has beaded the park project for the Public Works depart- ment in Newport Beach , the cost for the facility is S 1.8 million and it consists of 12 acl'C9 (522,000 square feet). Land for the park was donated by the Irvine Company in lieu of paying park fees to Newport Beach for building the residential tracts in the sur- rounding area of the softball field. Williamson said he was hop- ing the park would be finished in time for the start of the softball season on May 23, but the grass on the playing fields wasn' ready yet. The first week's games had to be rescheduled at other facilities. Staneart said it was matter of the contractor needing "to fill in the bear spots" in the grass. "The grass was planted in February and we told the con- tractor it was still too tender to play on," Staneart explained. "But I think the field should be ready for the June 6 starting date, though." The soccer field which is located at the end of one of softball fields will be used by local American Youth Socur Organization leques, but there is no plans to run little league games at the park in the near future. Geerlinp pulled away from the field down the stretch in the one-mile race to finish first with a 4:09.S4 as he shattered his previous best in the event of 4: 15.1. Their hospitality was extended throuah coff ecs, teas and evening events to those interested in hearing about the INSIGHTS way God and faith has become or has been a very important part of their lives. Among the many wonderful meetings were three ladies who arc grateful to God in times of joy and who agree that it was God's guidance which helped them cope in times of stress. Lynne Freidman introduced Mary Jones at the afternoon tea in the lovely Corona del Mar home of Kay Williams. Jones served as manager of community relations for Disneyland for 25 ycan before becoming chief of protocol for the county of Orange. She spoke about her life, which includes three chil- dren and her husband Wes, whom she credits with bringing the focus of Jesus into her life. Jones bad grown up f caring God but it was not until she joined a prayer group in 1969 that she began a penonal rela- tionship with Jesus Christ. She realiz.ed in looking back bow often He bad been there for her especially during the five weeks of her husband •s hospitalization for diabetes. With God's help Jones also overcame a case of shingles of the brain. .. , no longer f car or worry about the future especially as I have come to realize how much God loves each one of us so very much," Jones said. Barbara Hall opened her warm and inviting home in Newport Beach to entertaining and interesting Debby Rettino, who was introduced by her longtime Calvary Chapel f ricnd, Diane McCardle. Rettino began by speaking of her Jcwi~b heritage and com- menting on her father's remarks about her Italian husband. "He considered it close enough to being Jewish because with bis beard, he looked like a rabbi. He also said that we have the same kind of guilt. "There was a time he was not so accepting of me and one Christmas Eve, ordered me out of his house. I had gone then to tell bim I had decided to follow Jesus Christ and from then on a wall went up. 1 had been taking a clus on compar- ative religions when we bad tbcsc really weird people come to talk from the Jesus movement in the 1960s. But those who are not going to those places this summer can enjoy a tropical paradise right in the middle of Costa Mesa. in the prestigious homes of Mesa Verde. This week's featured home is located at 1839 Jamaica and is the epitome of the Cali- fornia lifestyle and what Mesa Verde is all about. The home is situated on the 14th green and the 15th tee of Mesa V crde Country Club, with a double lot on a quiet culdesac. The property f eatu.rcs a pool, spa, tennis/ basketball court, greenhouse, two patios and a cabana in addition to the elegant and rambling home. A HOME WITH MANYM009s If a buyer enjoys entertaining, this--is a home that bas it all. Families will also ~l right at home with the many1 large bed- rooms and spacious informal dining area and television room. The home is located on the side of the culdesac street, which offers an extra-large lot. The developer of Mesa Verde North built the home for himself and his family, so there are many extras. For entertaining, parking is not in short supply, with the sweeping culdesac. A double garage and carport offers max- imum parking for the residents. Guests enter the home past a profusion of tropical plants and ferns, through a gate to the courtyard with the sparkling pool. Bearing left and mounting some steps, guests will find themselves in the tennis court area. The court faces north and south and has lights for night games. The surrounding fence is covered with ivy and mature trees and shrubs, allowing for maximum privacy. A basketball hoop at one end of the court gives potential Lakers the opportunity for a good workout. The large cabana has a bank of windows facing the tennis court. The structure is large enough to be converted to a separate apartment, if owner desire. The current owners are Fii All IA•El-'hll _.., .. .._ ..... II; ... The bathroom has been updated to include a stylish pedestal sink. The cabana is totally self- contained with its own stove and refriaerator. The room is waiting for a party and is large enough to place game tables. On the roof of the cabana arc solar water heating panels. COUNTRY CLUB LIVING Guests walk past the pool and enter the home through double doors, to the flag-stoned entry. A large window looks out over the pool area. To the left of the entry, guests will walk through a sliding door to the enclosed and inviting spa. The room has a greenhouse effect, with its many windows, extending upward. A door off the spa room leads to the real greenhouse, which the current owner said derives the benefit of the spa's moisture. Back to the entry, guests step down to the parquet floor of the formal living room. Window walls face the golf course and colorful rose garden. A sliding glass door leads to a veranda where guests can relax and watch the activity on the golf course. A gas fireplace provides atmosphere. Stain off the living room lead down to the gentleman 'a library. A large window overlooks the aolf coune. Over the serving area are three custom-made smaller crys- tal light fixtures. The guest powder room is the next stop, with its overhcight ceiling, mirrored wall, crystal chandelier, marble countertop, crown molding and real gold- plated sink fixtures. Continuing to the end of the ball through double doors is the master suite. A wall of windows also off crs a sweeping view. Off to one side is a small bath, with a pedestal sink and two mirrored sliding wardrobes. The full master bath is accessible down some stairs. This room defines elegance. Solid walnut cabinc- t.ry, plush carpet and Venetian marble are the highliahts. The ·current owner said that the Italian bas put a moratorium on export of Venetian marble, so this ii a rare find indeed. I i .. • . : • ~j Long tenure+ high sales volume= top producer BY CHERYL STEHLING Marilyn Twitchell is proud to say that she has enjoyed working with t.be George Elkins Com- pany for 20 yean. But it goes beyond that. Twitchell ia one of the top producen, member of the Gold Key Club with six diamonds and she is confident she will receive a seventh at the end of the year. The Gold Key is earned by an agent who achieves top dollar volume and diamonds arc added each year thereafter if the agent continues that volume, Twitchell said. Twitchell originally worked at the Brentwood branch of the Elkins Company before moving to the Newport Beach branch in 1976. ""Brentwood has the same type of quality properties as Newport Beach, with the same supply and demand," she said. "I sold there and in Beverly Hills and Bel Aire." Twitchell also said that the company also has tics in Palm Desert and San Marino and she has done business there, as well. She enjoys working with Elkins and her future plans are to just keep working and main- taining a high production level. "Our company is wide-spread, but small enough that when we have annual meetings, we (the age nts) can all get together and get acquainted," Twitchell said. "I've set up people who arc looking for properties in those areas where we have offices and I have co-listed in Palm Desert." Before she decided to go into real estate, Twitchell was a teacher. She took some time off to be a mother when her two daughters were young, but when they were old enough to be in school, Twitchell wanted to work part time and decided on real estate. ~Back then, you could work part time in real estate, but not now," she said. "By the time I went full-time, I was fully ens- consed in the business." Twitchell attributes her suc- cess to her love for the business. ~when you like what you arc doing you can be enthusiastic and do a good job," she said. ~u is very challenging." Twitchell said it is important to keep up with the changes of the busin~s and with ethics. She said agents shouldn't get so excited that they 1.ose sight of the principles of the business. And she believes that cooperation between agents is very important to achieve reciprocal success. Recently, one of Twitchell's listings appeared on the cover of the Newport Ensign/ Costa Mesa News real estate supplement and sold after it appeared. She attributes the sale to the coverage. Twitchell is an avid golfer, so if she has any spare time, chances arc she will be found on the course at Newport Beach Coun- try Club. "I•m not really a good golfer," she said modestly. "But it is my outlet and I enjoy it for relax- ation and fresh air." Twitchell said she recently won a ladies golf tournament with her f ounome and they were first net in their flight. In addition to golf, Twitchell enjoys tennis, swimming, sailing and bridge. She has two grand- children and her parents live on Lido Isle, so she enjoys the benefits of having her family around her. Twitchell enjoys the arts, so the is a member of the South Pacific Chapter of the Pcrf orm- ing Arts Center and also serves on the board. As a University of Southern California gradu- ate, she is a member of the Trojan League of USC and a member of the Newport Harbor Art Museum. She enjoys travel- ing and has a tentative trip planned to France in the fall. George Elkins Company is located at 17 Corporate Plaza, Suite J 0 I, Newport Beach.
