A Hollywood man wu arrested euly
Tuctday morning in connection with
the murder of a Newport Beach oph-
thalmologist after Los Angeles Police
spotted him allegedly driving the
victim's car.
Police believe Allen J. Lindsey, 23,
who is unemployed, and another
unidentified person, arc responsible for
the death of Boonkird Cbulapatrchec-
vin, who was stabbed to death last
Wednesday night in his West Ocean-
front duplex.
The suspects were stopped in Los
Angeles after officers ran a check on
the white 1988 Mercedes Benz S60 SL
that Lindsey was allegedly driving and .
discovered it belonged to Cbulapat-
rcbecvin, said Newport Beach Police
spokesperson Bob Oakley.

Drug smuggling charges were dis-
miued Tuesday morning against a
Santa Cruz man who was the last
defendant involved in the largest dru_g
seizure in the City of Newport Beach.
Bruce Patrick Malley, 32, walked out
of Hubor Municipal Court a free man
when Dep. District Attorney Tom
Borris announced that a key witness in
the case was "'un•vailable for further
proceedings" and Judge Frances
Munoz dismissed the case.
Malley was the fourth Santa Cruz
resident to be released in the 1985 drug
bust, which netted six tons of marijuana
from a 4S-foot sailboat moored at M
Street near the Balboa Peninsula.
The other three def end ants, Victor
Lucini, Richard Nelson and David
Choy were released after Harbor
Municipal Court Judge Russell
Bostrom ruled the police search was
illegal. A state appellate court upheld
the dismissal.
Malley, who had eluded capture for
three years, surrendered in December
and pleaded innocen.t to two felony
counts of conspiracy to import a~
transport marijuana into the state of
Calif omia and the actual transporta-
tion of the drugs.
Borris said Tuesday that while the
three other defendants in the case had
been called to testify, a key witness
needed to prove the case was unavail-
able.
"'I guess time was on our side and
against us in this. The extra time gave
us the ability to use the three def end-
ants, but worked against us because it
affected the availability of our other
witness," Borris said.

"Reflections" is a national PTA cultural arts program
intended to encourage children and teenagers to express
themselves through music, literature, visual arts and
photography. The program was begun in response to
a tightening of school budgets nationwide early in this
decade, which squeezed out many local programs in
music and the arts.
This year, the contest has the theme "Proud
Experiences" and it was interesting and uplifiing to see,
read and hear the many expressions of pride offered
by the local students.. '
There was Lisa Frecmatt's poem, '•Ppde is Never
Alone," which expressed the sense of achievement in
being part of a stage production, tinged with the sadness
felt by the company before the play's the final
performance.
There was Brian Tyler's riveting musical interpretation
of. a meeting in Moscow inventively titled '•Russian-
American Youth Summit ConcertQ: Proudly in the Key
of Peace." "
There was Kirsten McFarland's photo of two girls
proudly displaying a soccer trophy; and Cameron
Smith's image of a toddler reaching up and just managing
to grasp a fruit hanging from a low branch, entitled,
"I can get it myself.,.
Ther~ was Jami Russell's clever drawing, ''Through
Grandpa's Eyes," depicting 70 years of history reflected
in a pair of glasses ; and two images of graduation, one
by Kris Bender, the other by Kristi Phoebus.
~A nd there was Teresa Barnett's entry, in which he
di:ew herself in her: roude momef\4 when h
represe nted the Marion Parso ns Special Education
Center in last spring's Orange County Special Olympics
Pageant.
There were many other works, all expressions of the
youngsters' imaginations and sense of pride, and all
together an encouraging affirmation of the abilities of
the upcoming generation.
The entries now go on to be judged at the next level
of competition, the. Fourth District (which includes all
of Orange County and part of Los Angeles , County).
Beyond that are the state and national le~els.
We offer congratulations to all the entrants in the
Harbor Council Reflections Contest, for fine their fine
work and fine spirit~ and wish the best of luck to those
whote works will go on to other levels of competition.

Recently, the Sea Kings

CdM's girls squacf bas·
accomplished this despite having
key starters either injured or ill
during much ol the season. The
Sea Kings, who are the def end-

remained competitive in league
action notching a 3-1 ma~k, 11-

Cd M's only Joss in league action

Cd M's casualty list this season
includes seniors Julie Smith (the -
team's top player), who was
sidelined with a shoulder injury,
Tracy Boatman (knee injury),
goalie Kim Kolstad, (bronchi-

CdM's injured players arc

team had eight senion out of the

injuries or illness, Nguyen

The r~nt return of J ulic .
Smith was big boost for Sea
Kinp, Nguyen said.
"'She is the best player in the
league," Nguyen added.
..l~ not seen a kid with better
detcQDination or the s kill and
understanding of what it takes
to win."
Nguyen said Smith played
well in the Estancia game but
wai still affected by her injury.
.. People were leaning on 'her
shoulder, so she couJdn' be real
physical," Nguyen said.
However, the Sea Kings have
continued to win games which
Nguyen attributes to the team's
depth. Cd M bas 14 players from
last year .... s team, wrucb reac cd
as far as the Cl F quarterfinals
before losing.
.. It's because of our depth and
the ability of our players to play
different positions. I also think
this year's team is stronger. They
have better ball control skills, ..

Todd is considered the team's
defensive stopper. She has
drawn the team's toughest de-
fensive assignments this season.

Seniors Katie Geib (who
scored the game-winning goal
against Estancia) and Christy
Prough have also contributed
for the Sea Kings.
The team's recent success
comes down to their aggressive
defense: They play a combina-
tion of a zone and man-to-man
defense. -
.. Defense has always been our
strength. Because of injurie this
season. I've told the kids that we

On Feb. 19, 1987, our ad on this page contained the following recom-
mendation:
You 've heard it said: Buy when there are lots of properties ~n the
market-in a BUYER'S MARKET, when many sellers are competing for
-the few real buyers who are out there. When prices ~re . softening. .
True but for the investor who is looking for appreciation, the begin-
ning of a selier's market may be a good time to buy. Now ma~ be just
that type of market. With very few homes on the market, pnces are
pushing upward-particularly in the lower range of homes. A town -
home in a desirable beach area might be a big winner over the next few
months.
Since that date in 1987, an investment of $50,000 in such a Newport
Beach condo would have returned at lea~ 100% on th~~nvestment In

Office romance leads. tQ .we.d·d ·ing bells
BY CHER)'L STEHLING
Bobby Dorman and Ingrid
Pitrelli think of themselves as a
typical '80s couple. But when it
comes down to marriage, Bobby
really considers himself an old
f ashioncd kind of guy.
For example, Bobby knew
since last June he wanted to
propose to Ingrid, but he talked
it over with his family and gave
it a lot of thought first. And
when he returned from a fishing
trip to Canada with bis fat her
in August, the plan was firmly
eemented in bis mind.
Bobby and Ingrid ·arc an
example of an office romance
with a happy ending. They first
met when they were both work-
ing as advertising
representatives at a community
newspaper in North Orange
County. ·
.. A lot of people assumed we
were going together," said
Ingrid. "That was because we
would be seen together, but it
was always work-related."
They would make sales calls
together, or attend events held
by advertisers. But since they
were the only advertising repre-
sentatives at the company, it was
natural.
But they both TCalized there
was a spark about to ignite one
evening when they took a ride
on the ferris wheel at the Balboa
Fun Zone,
'trf bad been singing down at
Newport Landing," Bobby
remembered. "We-decided to
take a ride and that ·s where it
all began."
Shades of that old '60s tune,
"Palisades Parle"
Bobby joined the Newport
Ensign/ Costa Mesa News in
October, 1987 and Ingrid fol-
lowed the end of November. But
they kept their romance a secre t.
"We didn't want anyone to
think it would affect our work,.,
Ingrid explained.
Ingrid and Bobby are very
competitive when it comes to
work. Ingrid bas been the New-
port Ensign /Costa Mesa News'
top salc.s person __fur sever al
months and Bobby has done his
fair share in that department.
Tbe competitive spirit is alive
and well, u Bobby and Ingrid
try to win the bonUICI paid for
tbe -hiabest dollar count on
..,ecial adftrtiaing supplements.
So far, lnpid tiU won several _. lo a row. _
The pair decided to break the
newt of their cnaaaement to the
offace staff riaht after the holi-
days. Many were ftry surprised
and didn \even know Bobby and
lnpid had been seeing each
other. Bobby deliahts in telling
the story of bow be proposed to
Ingrid.
Bobby ordered Ingrid's ring
from bis friend at the Gemstone
Collector. He bad the perfect
plan of bow be would praent
it to ber. They had reservations
at Cbanteclair for their Christ-
mas dinner on Dec. 23. He had
told her she was getting a tennis
bractlet . He wanted to present
it to her during . dessert, on a
silver tray with a dome. But
Chanteclair didn't have any such
dish. So he searched around
town and finally found one and
took it to the restaurant man-
ager, who put it, with the ring,
in the safe.
"I know how she is, so I just
fiP,red we would sit..., and talk for
about 20 minutes and she would
be ready," Bobby said.
So they sat, enjoying their
cozy fireside table and Bobby
even sang her a song. Finally,
the moment arrived. lngrid was
ready for flan. But she questi-
oned why aJJ of the waiters aQ~
restaurant personnel kept star--
ing at her.
"Everyone at the restaurant
was in on it," Bobby said. "When
the waiter brought the tray, he ·
asked Ingrid if she wanted to do
the honors."
Ingrid lifted the lid and there
sat the box, all wrapped._ Bobby
said she looked shocked.
"He told me I wasn't getting
my tennis bracelet, but when I
saw the box, I thought, 'Aha!'"
Ingrid said.
So she unwrapped it and was
even more in shock when she saw
the ring. Meanwhile, everyone in
the restaurant, from the waiters
to the guests we re all observing.
Bobby got d own on bis knees
next to Ingrid and proposed. To
him and lngridJ the rest of the
people didn't exist.
"But she didn't say anything,"
Bobby said, laughing. "I finally
had to ask her again. By that
time, she had burst into tears and
said 'Yes.' T he waiter told me
later that there wasn \ a dry eye
in the place."
They haven't settled on a
wedding da te yet, but it might
be sometime this summer, in
Lake Tahoe. Then, they wiU
come back and have a party.
Ingrid 's daughters, Anjeliq ue
and Christen, were thrilled at the
news.
Both Ingrid and Bobby have
aspirations to the stage. Ingrid
has had training and her desire
is to be a dramatic actress. She
bas trod the boards many times
and even bas an agent. But what
ii her favorite part?
"I like to play the wicked city
woman," She said. laughing,
"sort of a Joan Collins type."
Bobby, on the other band,
performs with bis band, "Night-
watch.," on Monday and Tues~
day nights at the Newport Mar-
riott 'a View Room, in the tower.
He plays keyboards, sings and
even writes songs. On Saturday
nights, he guest-performs with
the View Room's band,
"Intersection."
.. I guess we are so well suited,
because we have so many of the
same tutes," said Ingrid. "And
I always knew I would be spend-
ina the rat of my life with bim."

Fashion by Hiqui
Brides who arc searching all ovet
and not quite satisfied with what they
find in bridal gowns might opt to have
one cqstom made. Maybe they have
certain styles or embellishments in
mind that readyto-wear shops have
not been able to produce.
That is where Hiqw Agbajanian,
owner of Fashions By Hiqui can help.
The s hop specializes in c ustom-
designed wardrobes and this time of
year is especially important for brida"
Aghajanian said.
Everything at Fashion By Hiqui is
designed for especially for the fit of
the client. Aghajanian said that most
designers use a standard mannequin,
with one size, while most women are
multiple sizes. To solve this pro blem,
Aghajanian makes her own patterns
and supervises the work of her staff
in the state-of-the-art workroom.
Aghajanian cited one example of
her bridal work. A bride wanted a very
contemporary look, with a miniskirt,
but her mother wanted to stay with
the traditional. They reached a com-
promise with a beautiful gown, com-
bining the bes~ of both worlds. The
bride wore a gown with a bubbleslcirt
of 35 yards of silk organza. During
the reception she literally tore of the
bottom of the skirt to achieve the look
s he desired .
Fashions By Hiqui also specializes
in tuxe!o making. Or, the groom and
his men can rent any number of
tuxedos avaiJable on the premises.

After the bride and groom have
begun to plan the wedding and
compile their collective guest list, it's
time to think about the invitation.
Tbe Ultimate Invitation in Newport .
Beach provides personalized service in
all aspects of engagement announce-
ments, wedding invitations, wedding
announcements and bridal shower
invitations.
"Our emphasis is on service," said

ding rules and etiquette, "how to work
an invitation, if they are haying a
wcddin in it' church venus a-gardctr
and so on."
Invitations a re designed to create
the kind of m~od the bride wants to
achieve. They can be elegantly under-
stated to o utrageously wild, Coombs
said. lf what the bride wants is not listed~ in the catalog, The Ultimate
Invitation can create it.
Brides will come in and sit on a
com.f ortable couch while meeting with
Coombs to determine their needs.

Ultimate Invitation. Attendants' gifts
can be engraved with their names.
"We have a large selection of
everything and the bride who is budget
conscious can bendit from coming
here," Coombs said.

a calligraphy service. But it isn't done
by a person, it is done with the Inscribe
Calligraphy Machine. Each invitation

Private beach, great· location in Beacon Bay
BY CHERYL STERLING
The sound of crying seagulls,
the sight of the Calif omia brown
pelican in flight~ the f celing of
warm sand on a private be.acb,
the smell of salt water from the
bay-the senses are truly height-
ened at this week's f eaturcd
home located at 63 Beacon Bay.
TbcTc is a feeling of commu-
nity here, as Beacon Bay was one
of Newpert Beach •s first devel-
opments. The home is situated
on a comer R2 lot. on land
owned by the city of Newport
Beach. The residents of Beacon
Bay arc in the procieSs of ne-
gotiating a favorable new lease,
which may extend for as long
as SO years.
· This home may be a single
home with a huge family bonus
roo~ or a home with an apart-
ment.
.. Beacon Bay is Newport
Beach., best kept secret,"' said
Linda Taatianetti of George
EJtjm Company, listing agent
for the home. -niis is a little slice
of the wortd. What I like is the
private beach. With the front of
the home just a few feet from
the water and beyond, you have
a wondedul view of the city

BEDROOMS WITH A VIEW
The staircase is situated in the
entry hall. In the landing at the
top of the stairs is a skylight
overhead. The master suite is
located on the baysidc, as is the
second bedroom.
A dressing room is located off
the hall. It bas a cedar walk-in
closet and another double closet .
with a sliding d oor. A separate
closet has racks for shoe storage.
The dressing room has a mir-
rored sitdown vanity table. The
bath is reached from the dressing
area. Ceramic tile is used on the
walls, floor and around the
glassed-in shower/ tub. The
bathtub is the double-sized
stepdown kind, and a wall of
glass block created just the right
mood.
The master bedroom is very
spacious, and another walk-in
closet is located there. A ceiling
fan and windows on three sides,
looking out to the-view, arc just
the ticket to luxury. A sliding
glass door leads out to the
private patio. Sliding panels
under the windows, providing
ventilation, are also used there.
A hall leads to the second
bedroom and many closets are
there. The bedroom is deep, and
another.. closet. is located along.
the-back wall. Side wind0ws to
the city light view, and more in
the front to the bayside view, are
spectacular. A sliding glass door
also leads out to the upstairs
balcony. The private bath,
located off the hall, has ceramic
tile on the floor, around ·the sink
and stall shOWCL Glass block is
used in the shower.
BONUS APARTMENT
Homeowners who want to
enjoy extra income can rent out
the apanment at the tear of the
home, or merely tum it into an
all-purpose game room or rum-
pus room for entenaining. It can
also be used as a teen-ager' or
mother-in-law's wing.
Berber carpet is used through-
out the apartment. It is acces-
sible either off the main upstairs
landing or from the outside, as
mentioned earlier.
The first fOOm is L-shaped
and acts as a living room and
dining room if the apanment

Long-time resident t~bbed 'R~altor of Year'
BY CHERYL STEHLING
Jane Boyd, long-time New-
port Beach resident and area
realtor, was selected as the
Newport Harbor-Costa Mesa
Board of Realtor's Realtor of the
Year.
"It was a real thrill and I never
thought they would pick me,~
said Boyd.
But that wasn't the first time
Boyd has won that distinction.
In 1976, she shared the trophy
with her late husband, John. ·
Boyd has lived in Newport
Beach since 1943, so one could
truly say she has seen many
changes. Two of her three sons

were born here, and all grew up
enjoying beach life and attend-
ing area ~chools. While her
children were growing up, Boyd
spent much time doing charitl
work with the National Assis -
ance League and the Assistance
League of Newport Beach, of ·
wl)icb she is a past president.
Her interest in real estate goes
back to the post-World War 11
building boom of Newport
Beach. She would take.her sons
and walk through every new
tract being built.
"We watched the city grow
and we grew with it," Boyd
remembered.
Because · the Boyds knew
nearly all of the builders in the
area, just from touring thei r
homes, it was natural they would
enter the real estate fi eld . Boyd
was talked into joining her
husband in 1967.
"I instantly fell in love with
the bu iness. •· she aid. "I enjoy
working with people.··
The Boyds opened their own
office on Coast Highway, Boyd
_Realtors. Boyd clo ed the office
three years ago and now works
out of her rambling Harbor
View home, where he ha lived
for 17 year .
"The people I do-4usi nes with
I have known for a 'rong time,"
she said . .., have sold them
homes before, a nd I also have
a lot of referrals."
Boyd always seems to take
leadership roles in everything
she does . .She is active in the
Women's Council of Realtors,
has been a state director of the
California Association of Real-
tors since 1978 and was president
of the Newport Harbor-Costa
Mesa Board of Realtors in 1985.
Boyd-loves her business, but
she also loves her free time. S he
fills it with bridge, reading and
traveling. And as for the latter,
it can be said that Boyd has
traveled the world .
.. My husband didn't like trav-
eling much, so I would go and
he would stay home,,. she said.
There is a clock on her den
wall that tells what the time is
in any part of the world. Boyd
said her husband would know
the best time to call her, based
on her itinerary. _
Boyd's last trip in the fall was
to Borneo, Malaysia and Thai-
land. Her next trip will fulfill a
lifelong dream. She will travel
to Santiago, Chile, and sail
through the Strait of Magellan.
S he has been ·to China and
Africa twice and just about any
other country one would be able
to name.

Treat clients-like the friends they are

The other day we turned down
a listin'g from a former client
whose modus operandi we are
not comfortable with. "Y OlJ
should separate the personal
from your business," he admon-
ished us. We have often won-
dered what that means.
"The personal," presumably,
is your everyday involvement
with family, friends, people you
come in contact with. 0 Thc
personal" is the manner in which
you relate to other people, in
h<>w you treat them, in how you
want them to treat you in return.
Isn't business the same? "Busi-
ness" doesn' happen in and of
itself. Business is created by
people and for people. Business
is people relating to one another
and interacting with one another
in a manner beneficial to all
involved. Good business that is.

be a fair and loving spouse, a
caring and exemplary parent?
Perhaps for a short while-b_ut
not in the long run.
It is said that "You can fooJ
some of the people all of the
time, and all of the people some
of the time. But you can't fool
all of the people all of the time."
Good business people arc,
quite simply, good people. They

by the golden rule. 1f it doesn'

A good business person has
to have the courage to say "no."
No to a transaction that is not
in the best interest of his client
or business partner, no to a
"deal" that doesn't look honest.
