SchOol kids get life lesson
BY CHERYL TEHLING
Young ter in the pre-teen to
early teen-age year often face
ome of the toughest deci ions
they have had to make in their
short lives, and it all boils down
to one thing: Peer pres ure.
South Coast Repertory is
doing its part to help kids in this
age group understand that it's
okay to be confused, ifs okay
to want to belong and above aU ,
they arc not alone.'
SCR 's annual Educational
Touring Production, .. When I
Grow Up." is a musical lesson
in individuality. The touring
group began its visit of more
than 78,000 tudents at 180
elementary chool in January
and will continue until June.
Last week, the show was staged
at Harbor View School, to a
packed auditorium of ab<.>ut 375
4th, 5th and 6th graders. The
production held their attention
well and taught many valuable
lessons ..
The four characters arc Tina,
Melody and Hugo, who arc not
part of many group, but would
like very much to be. The nar-
rator is simply known as
"friend," who is not really the
friend a youngster in this age
group shouJd know.
Tina. played by Victoria Hof-
f man, likes to take picture . Her
greatest joy is hanging around
and waiting for "the light to be
just right. ..
Hugo, the kid from the barrio,
is played by Michael Alvarez.
Because he likes to write, hi
de ire is to start his own
neighborhood newspaper.
Then there's Melody (Martha
New), who loudly complains
that she wants to belong to the
popular crowd.
Throughout the hour. the
audience watches as Melody
transforms her hair, speech and
clothing so she may be accepted
into the crowd. Hugo is accosted
by gang members in his barrio
that tell him to abandon hope.
that there is no chance of getting
out. Tina, while out taking
pictures, is encouraged to try
drugs, as a means of making her
pictures .. better." ·
Meanwhile, the friend (Keith
Devaney), basks in the glory of
helping the three make the
choices they didn't really want
to make in the first place.
But all ends well, as Tina,
Melody and Hugo decide to start
their own newspaper and just be
themselves, even if it means
giving up belonging to the
group.
.. It was funny and kids of all
ages would like it," said Joel
Owen. 12.
"It was good because it
showed how to make the right
choices," said Matt Friend, 11 .
And Brian Fracalosy, Mike
Digrado, Bryan Halley and Ali
Tehrani all agreed that the
production w.as .. excellent."

Teach ,· not preach
Last week's open forum discussion between concerned
parents and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District was
very informative for many reasons.
Point one would be that the district allows and encourages
parents to air their opinions to the board, in a publ!c ~eeting,
if they foil ow specific guidelines set down by the d1stnct.
Point two would be that it gave real insight into what
a certain parent group wants and expects from the district.
And point three, it was very convincing that the slogan
"Teach, Not Preach,., should be adapted for certain
curriculums, especially those involving sex education.
More than 30 people addressed the board last week. Those
who spoke represented a variety of opinions, from those who
want the district to give parents more say into the curriculum,
to those who addressed the controversial gay speaker issue
to those who felt their academic freedom is at stake. No ·
one can argue that parents should .have a say whether or
not their students should be subjected certain material. And
no one one can argue tharparents should be mailed permission
slips when that material is about to be presented.
But we disagree that homosexuality should be taught as
an immoral lifestyle or that premarital sex is wrong. Leave
that to the parents and clergy people. Issues of morality have
no place in the classroom, especially at state-funded schools.
If parents want their students to be preached at, then let
them enroll in religious institutions. Teachers need to present
the facts of certain material, objectively and let students draw
their own conclusions.
If the issue of whether or not a certain act is moral, students
need to ask their parents or clergy person and not try to
foist their beliefs off on others.

Hear it for Jim DeBoom
Somehow the Newport
YMCA and Jim DeBoom
seemed a perpetual constant,
like the Roman Catholic Church
and the Pope, so I was a little
mystified when this remarkable
man and tbc organization he
served decided to part company.
But after visiting with him and
his wif cJ Barbara, I'm surprised
the move didn' happen a long
time ago. Like so many people
in Newport Beach and Orange
County the De Booms decided to
go out on their own. to do it
their way, and to see just bow
many of their skills and talents,
not now being used, could be
profitably employed.
So the popular .bead man at
the Y, who built the local Y into
a community resource, will now'
be part of DcBoom &: Asso-
ciates, also known as DeBoom
and DeBoom, and they're
already making a lot of noise in
our town. Both continue to serve
many good causes, for free.

CdM strong in
girls track again
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
Last year. Corona del Mar
High's girls track team captured
the CIF 3A title and set the
Orange County record in the
1600 meter relay at the state
finals.
How do you top that?
Recently. on the eve of 1989
track season, Steve Kaczynski,
CdM's girls track coach. asked
himself that question.
"At first, I was asking myself.
how do you· top last year's
team?.," be sajd.
"We•d lost some of our top
atbJetes from last year ( d •Layne
Kerr and Chickie Moiso who
·were members of last year's 1600
meter relay squad) to gradua-
tion. But more and more in our
practices, we 're finding a lot of
new athletes... Kaczynski
remarked.
"We're young team but we're
also balanced. I think we're
going to be as competitive as last
year·s team."
The repeat success of Cd M's
team m 198~team inges on tfie
perf ormanccs of four returning
athletes from I 988's squad
including senior Laurie Sawin (a
standout volleyball player),
junior Jill Young, sophomore
Denise Mahoney and junior
Johanna Wallin.
Sawin was member of 1600
meter relay team last year, which
broke the OC record and she
also finished second in tbe Sea
View League in the 400, and high
jump. and fourth in the 200.
"Laurie is truly an outstand-
ing athlete. I consider her the
mother hen of the team. She is
the team leader," he said.
Young broke the schoool
record in the 300 hurdles with
a fifth place finish in CIF and
she finished in second in the 200
meters.
Wallin will compete in the
1600 and 3200 meter events.
Sophomore Denise Mahoney
finished" third in -CIF in high
jump in 1988 and should do even
better this year.
Othen who figure to contrib-
ute this season for Cd M include
juniors Karen Walley (league
champ in 100 and 300 hurdles
in 1988) and Christen Walley
(second in league in 400). Lind-

In the waning minutes of the
game, Cd M till had a chance
pull off another po t ca on
up ct but Trabuco Hill was one
giant the Sea King couldn't kill.
Following the ca Kings' loss,
coach Paul Orri , put it best.
"The game was right there for
the taking. We were close but
we couldn't put in our shots
when we had to."
"I think defensively we were
a little too concerned with
Swanwick . The ke y was how we
bandied their perimeter players.
I guess I didn't emphasize that
enough. Tho e arc the guys that

"But we don't have anything

The Sea Kings· 39 percent

percent in the econd Jlalf).
"You can't shoot le than 40
percent and win a C IF
championship," Orris com-

After three quarters. the Sea
Kings trailed, 45-40.
Early in the fourth quarter,
Trabuco Hill s' coach Rainer
Wulf took out Swanwick and
went with a quicker, fo ur guard

as CdM failed to capitalize on
Swanwick's absence.
CdM remained within striking

Techni-ski for fun
BY CHERYL STEHLING
On any given day, chances arc
that those in the vicinity of Coast
Highway and Tustin have seen
Mark Appel shussing down the
bilJ at brcajncck speed, carving
perfect turns and stopping on a
dime.
They might think he is just
another one of those crazy
skateboarders, that enjoys
endangering his life and others.
But Appel is using ski poles and
both feet are next to each other,
not the typical skateboarder's
stance. Appel is just simply
enjoying another day on his
Tecbni-Ski, a device he helped
to invent 10 years ago, with his
f ricnd, Brooks Thomas.

to get better," Appel claimed." A
beginner can work out for four

and be at intermediate skiing

Appel is quick to point out
that bis claim is well-
documented and not just rosy-
tinted optimism. And he doesn ~
like to use the word skateboard
in the same breath as Techni-

assembled in Mexico. The poles
that arc used arc regular ski
poles, except that the baskets arc
removed and replaced with hard
rubber tips.
"The Tcchnj-Sk.i is a sport all
its own, .. said Appel. "It's not
just limited to the ski industry.
And it's a lot less expensive,
too."
He pointed out that not every-
one has the time to go away for
a weekend ski trip and by the
time they are loosened up and
back in form, it's time to leave.
The Techni-Ski can help fill that
void .
The only drawback is that the
device is not available in stores.
Appel and Thomas are seeking
private in vestors who might be
interested in mass-mar keti ng
their venture. But those venture
capitalists who want to own

and Thomas want to give need

"We are about to submit a

Appel said it does no good for

Wome~ gather to pfay for world peace

For one !pirit we are all
baptized in one body-Cor: 1:13
"Jesus, Teach Us to Pray" was
the theme planned by seven
women of Burma. who prepared
INSIGHTS
the materials for this World Day
of Prayer.
This program, presented on
March 3 by Church Women
United, marted the 102nd obser-
vance as thousands of Christians
joined together in 170 countries
and regions of the world to pray
as one body for each other and
. for world peace. This global
circle of prayer acts, each year,
as a powerful bond of hope to
st rengthen relationships
bet ween all people on this
planet.
President Othella Crane of
Newport Harbor Church
Women United Area One wel-
comed the gathering of women
from many area churches.
Myrna Ireland of St. Michael
and All Angels Episcopal
Church in Corona del Mar
worked with Crane in planning
the day's program.
Ireland began the program
with a warm welcome and a I prayer.
"As we combine our thoughts
in prayer today with those
around the world. let us also
combine our hearts in love for
all God's children to live within
peace," she said. "What a special
day for God to hear our hearts
united in prayer."
She introduced Father Peter
Haynes, rector of St. Michael's.
Ruth Nelson, vice president of
Church Women United New-
port Harbor, led the prayers,
while Nancy Wade and Virginia
Rostvold were the readers in the
program of prayer. Music was
provided by Jane Englar, Helen
Brown and Mary Lester of First

tries and provide help when
indicated.
It was during this luncheon,
for those who know and love

her happy high spirits and

was revealed . . . even while
beautifully dressed, her feet
never hurt as she whirls around

Balboa Island home a touch of Victorian
BY CHERYL STEHLING
The developers of Balboa
Island must have realized what
a rare jewel of real estate it was
when they gave the island's
streets names like Diamond.
Topaz, Sapphire and Ruby.
This week's featured home is
also a ,gem on Balboa Island.
even if it docsn 't reside on a a
jeweled street. In fact. it's even
better because the address is IOI
N. Bayfront and f catures its own
boat dock, forever views and
ocean breezes. The Victorian
motif of t.he home lends itself
well on this picturesque island
location. The walkway fronting
the canal and the bridge leading
to intimate Collins Isle.
"This home is very well-built,
with a wonderful view and
owners can live the relaxing
island life," said Goly Van Orden
with Waterfront Homes, one of
the listing agents ... There are no
parking problems here and the
home is ideal for families or
those who want to have an office
at home."
TURRETS & VICTORIAN
CHARM
The home is built on many
levels, with· many balconies and
entrances and an outside stair-
case, characteristic of Victorian
homes. The exterior walls arc a
combination of Cape Cod blue
and white and brick is used on
the patio facing the bay. The
accompanying boat dock may
accommodate up to a 30-foot
craft.
If one chooses to walk up the
steps to the front entry and pass
through the double doors, be or
she will be in the family room.
One of the doors has a Dutch
feature, which captures the
gentle breeze into the home.
The family room bu a multi-
colored berbcr carpet. w•b ii

there isn't a wood floor. Other
highlights are a corner brick,
fireplace, rough-sawn wood
ceiling with decorator fan-light,
a comer turret, with windows all
around facing out to the bay.
Just off the family room is a
bedroom, with crown molding,
berber carpet, a sliding mirrored
closet and windows taking
advantage of the view. A door
provides access to the bathroom,
which also serves the rest of this
level of the home. The bath has
oak cabinetry and octagon
ceramic tiles are used on the
counter-top and around the
shower/ tub. Interesting antique
faucet fixtures are featured on
the sink. The bathroom is also
accessible off a hall.
The hall has wood floors
extending its length. Outside of
the bathroom is a small wet bar,
with oak cabinet, black tile
counter and hammered brass
sink. The beginning of the stair-
case is here as is an oak win-
dowseat with underneath stor-
age. A laundry area is at the end
of the hall and another door
provides access from the car-
port.

From the hall, take the steps
up to a landing, where there is
another Dutch entry door. Then
proceed up the stairs the rest of
the way to the formal living
room, kitchen, guest powder and
master suite.
At the top of the stairs to the
left and toward the bay side is
the living room. There is an open
and air feeling here, with the
vaulted rougb .. awn wood ceil-
ing and exposed tnwes. The
corner turret with its many
windowa adds to the feeling. A
lamp hangs over the turret,
where an intimate table may be
placed.
The fireplace has a painted
mantel in keeping with the
Victorian theme and above it is
a charming display niche.
Ceramic pavers arc used on the
hearth. French doors open out
to a petite balcony facing the
bay. At the rear of the room is
an area for placing dining
furniture and a chandelier hangs
over where the table sits.
The kitchen is compact and
has the best of everything, for
example, a built-in Sub-Zero
refrigerator and a Jenn-Air
electric stove, with overhead
microwave. Ceramic tile with
handpaintcd spotters, featuring
fruits and vegetables, adds a nice
touch on the counters. The
cabinets are oak. Other ame-
nities are a wood floor, coffered
ceiling with Victorian light
fixture, a dishwasher, trash
compactor and views of the bay.
Another staircase leads up to
a landing and door out to the
roof deck. From up here, 360-
dcgree views may be enjoyed of
Fashion Island, Promontory
Point, city lights, the rolling hills
and of course, the bay and boats.
The guest powder room off
the ball continues the Victorian
theme, with a pullcbain toilet,
complete with oak seat, oak
cabinets, marble countertop and
a sculpted sink with porcel~
fixtures.
LUXURIOUS MASTER

of the hall. It has two large
wardrobe closets with sliding
mirrored doors. The bath is on
the right inside the door. The
bandpaintcd ceramic tile coun-
ten match the colon in the
berber carpet. Two painted
buins are set into the counter.
The same tile ii uacd on the
eleaant Roman spa tub,

window looks out on the view
and the toilet is in a private
room.

area. There is a sleeping alcove,
which opens up to a vaulted
ceiling with exposed trusses. A
sitting area is at the end, with
a platform and door out to the
petite balcony and outside stair-
cue, which also leads up to the
roof deck.

.Realtor spotlight:
Merrill Lynch Realty: Fitness works
BY CHERYL STEHLING
Just about anyone around
town knows Jim Wood, man-
ager of Merrill Lynch Re·alty in
Corona del Mar, as a true
physical fitness buff. He believes
in the importance of staying in
shape and may be seen jogging
through the streets of Olde
Corona del Mar. His
involvement in the Scenic SK is
renown.
"This job is highly emotional
and stressful if you let it get to
you," Brooks said. "On partic-
ularly stressful days, I might go
home in the middle of the day,
go for a three-mile run, shower
and come back lo work
refreshed. Then I feel great."
Brooks lives in Newport
Heights and likes to run down
a course he has marked off of
Cliff Drive.
Jerry Brooks
But many of the agents work-
ing at the office agree with Wood
and also have physical fitness
programs of their own. Jerry
Brooks, Lois Calhoun and Stan
Eaton are among the top agents
in the office, who have found
that combining exercise with
their highly stressful jobs makes
a good marriage.
JERRY BROOKS
Jerry Brooks has always been
self employed in one way or
another and joined Unique
Homes before Merrill Lynch
bought the company two years
ago. He said that he likes to work
out at a gym, ride horses, run,
swim or just about anything that
will provide good exercise and
reduce stress.
"I'm n·ot a fanatic, I have been
known to cat cookies, Hagen
Dazs ice cream and an occa-
sional hamburger," Brooks said.
.. But I do try to watch what I
eat."
Brooks believes in balance in
his life and achieves it through
his church, for the spiritual end,
physical fitness for a healthy
mind and body and play for
stress release. The adventurous
side of him comes out in his
enjoyment of trail rides. This
week, Brooks is in the wilds of
Arizona. on the Verde Ride,
which is one of the most
strenuous. He said that snow has
been known to fall while the
group is camping out.
Brooks also has a pilot's

license and enjoys taking air-
plane trips
LOIS CALHOUN
Lois Calhoun started her real
estate career in Texas in 1979.
She came to the Harbor Area
in June, 1988 and went right to
work with Merrill Lynch.
"Physical fitness is very much
a part of my life," Calhoun said·.
"If I don't exercise and work out,
I don't feel good or function as
Lois Calhoun
well."
Prior to getting into real
estate, Calhoun taught physical
fitness classes. She runs every
other day and tries to get to the
Huntington Beach Athletic Club
at least two times a week for a
workout. Since she lives in
Huntington Beach, Calhoun
enjoys running along the strand,
taking in the fresh ocean air.
And she believes in not clogging
up her mind with the use of
headphones and tapes.
''I do some of my best thinking
and problem solving while
rnnning," she said. "I just let my
thoughts come in and out. I also
believe in sweating and if I don•t
sweat, I don't feel as if I had an
adequate work.out."
We' re fAldng the fight against cancer into the streets

Calhoun is very proud of the
fact that she placed third in her
age category in the recent Spirit
Run at Fashion Island. And she
placed first in the Harbor Her-
itage Run last fall.
Calhoun is enjoying much
success right now. She said that
it helps her to run at the end
of the day as a form of relaxing
and releasing tension.
.. you have to .keep yourself
own a home in Denver, where
I go to visit occasionally."
When he is there, Eaton may
be found on the ski slopes.
But at home in Laguna Niguel
and at work in Newport Beach,
Eaton prefers to run, play just
about any sport and workout at
Newport Athletic Club. But he
did lose about a month of
activity while he was busily
establishing himself at Merrill

blood pressure and speeds up
your metabolism, By taking an
hour a day, it repays a hundred-
fold to yourself."
STAN EATON
Stan Eaton had always been
involved in industry and was
running a computer company in
Colorado when he decided to
totally change his career and go
into real estate.
He come to the Harbor Area
two and one half years ago. He
worked with another local com-
pany and joined Merrill Lynch
this past January.

Lynch. Now that it has taken off,
he has started up. His one regret
was that he was not in shape to
participate in the Spirit Run.
"But I'm going to start work-
ing ~ith a trainer in the spring,"
he said.
Eaton will be 55 next October,
but one glance would have one
thinking he is much younger. He
has always been active in athlet-
ics and attended Perdue Univer-
sity on a football scholarship.
Two years ago, Eaton placed
third in the over 50 category in
the Corona del Mar Scenic SK.
After he gets back into shape,
Eaton plans on entering more
races.

Y ~ there will be some neg-
ative influence crcatecf by the

will not col.lcctively suffer. As
homes nearer the increased
traffic lose value, it will be only
in relationship to the interior

We might quote another ques-

buyen arc coming from almost
e~here in the world. But a
sizable segment of those new

from inland. It is more common
today to bear such a buyer
complain about the increase in
commuter time from Laguna

that same person complain
about congestion in Newport

mind that as local traffic
increases, traffic outside our

even faster. Just drive down
