Ornelas convicted
_ of manslau.ghter
BY MELINDA KELLER
Danny David Ornelas, who struck
down a Balboa Peninsula Point woman
last September as he sped through a
residential alley, was convicted Monday
of vehicular manslaughter.
Acquitted of the harsher penalty of
second-degree murder, the Hacienda
Heights resident now faces four to l 0
years in prison. His sentencing is
scheduled for May 2.
Although the prosecution bad a key
piece of evidence, a videotape
inadvertently taken by a passenger in
the car, the five-woman, seven-mu jury
opted not to hand down the second-
dcgrcc murder conviction, which would
have cost Ornelas IS years in prison.
The victim, Debbie Ann Killele~ 37,
pushed two of her children to safety
before she stood defiantly in front of
the speeding car, which threw her more
than 50 f cct. She died a f cw hours later
at a nearby hospital.
Ironically, Killelea bad been an active
force in her neighborhood for the
campaign to install speed reducing
devices. Recently, new playground
equipment and a plaque were dedicated
at Our Lady Queen of Angels in
Newport in her memory.

Make fares fair
When the deregulation of airlines was first proposed,
it was done so on the basis off airness.
The argument was advanced that government-
imposed fare (and safety) regulations created a situation
where one class of passenger was being subsidized by
another class of passenger.
In the interest of fairness, most regulations were
disposed of and airlines were free to choose their own
routes, set their own fares and pretty well make their
own policies on running their own businesses.
The Eastern Airlines situation today shows the
ultimate end of such a policy, but it is by no means
the only example.
A number of disturbing events began to surface
immediately after the regulations were relaxed. Perhaps
the most disturbing was the fact that the U.S. air safety
record suffered. It's true that federal agencies still exert
some regulatory control over the airworthiness of aircraft
and flight crews, but somethipg certainly has gone wrong.
WI! kept hearing increasingly frequent horror stories
about near-misses over the nation's busy airports; about
equipment failures, such as the top of a jct peeling off
like an orange skin in flight; about engines and airliner
parts falling off in flight ; windows cracking.
Of course, that's all the fault of the manufacturer,
say the airlines. No, say-: the plane builders, that's the

CdM pulls out
w'n in opener
BY MIKEL MATTO AND
GEORGE PAPPAS
During Corona del Mar
High's recent Sea View League
opener against University,
sophomore pitcher J.P. Patton
displayed the kind -of poise on
the mound usually expected of
experienced hurlers.
In his first league start, Patton
struggled early on giving up
seven runs in the first two
innings, but Cd M's coach Jerry
Jelnick kept with his starting
pitcher.
It paid off as Patton per e-
vered stopping Univer ity cold
in game' final five innings to
post his first league win for the
Sea Kings this season, 9-7.
The Sea Kings were led off en-
sively by freshman Todd Kehrli,
who knocked in five RBI.
Patton served up a three-run
home run in the opening inning
to Al Marlinga which was fol-
lowed by four singles as Univer-
sity went -ahead 6-1 . Todd Kehrli
drove in CdM's first run in the
opening inning with a single.
The Trojans• Dave Dieter
ripped a double to extend Uni-
versity's advantage to 7-1 in the
next frame. But University only
mu tercd a single off Patton fo r
the remainder of the conttst.
In the top of third inning.
Todd Kerhli continued make
trouble for University lamming
a double off the left-field fence
to drive home two runs. He then
banged out a two-run single in
the fourth to cut University'
lead to 7-6.
The Sea Kings caught the
Trojan in the sixth inning.
CdM filled the base as Reese
Thorkclson lammed a double to
right, Todd Kehrli was inten-
tionally walked, Todd Muth
acrificed and Brady .Lamar
drew a walk. The Trojans then
walked John MacMillan to eve n
the score at even.
CdM clinched the win in the
final inning. Greg Haack and
Chris Kebrli lammed base hits
and scored the game-winning
runs when University misplayed
a fly ball which dropped for a
two-run error.
Patton set down the Trojans
in the final inning.

Harbor's swimmers look for turnaround
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
Bill Jewell. Newport Harbor
High's boys swimming coach, is
finding out that it's not easy to
go home again.
From 1971 to 1980, Jewell
coached Harbor's swim teams to
seven Sea View League cham-
pionships. (He retired from
coaching in 1980).
But in recent years, the pro-
gram has gradually gone down-
hill.
This season Jewell returns to
bis former position as the boys'
swim coach at Newport Harbor
in an attempt to revamp the
program.
.. We had great teams-here in
the past but it dwindled off after
1981-82," Jewell remarked.
Wfberc bas been little or no
emphasis on swimming at Har-
bor in recent ycan. It's basically
been a filler program for water
polo. These kids come from
what I would consider a non-
existent proaram, .. Jewell said.
.. Last ye&J there was very little
intensity in the 1wimmin1
proaram. They were swimming
about one-third of the distance
we arc doing right now. The

All but one of the swimmers
on Harbor's team played water

The Sailors are very strong in
the 200 meter medley relay
event, Jewell said.
Swimming in the relay event
for the Sailors are backstrokers
junior John Somers and senior
Pat Merickel, brcastroker junior
Bobby McAlister, senior 8any
Dichon in the butterfly and
frcestyleT Tom Nichols.
In the 200 freestyle, the Sailors
have senior Jay Boris, who
Jewell describes as "'an incred-
ible endurance athlete."
Dietrich Jewell (the coach·
on). senior Jason Morgan (a
standout on the water polo
team), Kenton Reed and sopho-
more Ed Sick (500 meters) will
aJso compete in the distance
freestyle events for the Sailors.
Harbor's promising group of
freestylers includes s print
wimmen Richard Farrington
and Nichols (SO and 100 meters),
Tim Stickler (SO meters). junior
Kyle Kofford (I 00 meters),
Somers and Merickel (200
meters), Kurt Edler (SO and 100
meters).
Tom Eastman and Dicbon
will swim in the butterfly events
and senior Scott Corngold and
McAlister arc the team's top
awimmcn in the breastrotc.
Somers and Merickel in the
back troke should also be con-
si tent point scorers for Harbor.
Jewell describes sophomore
Rich Ruffini as kpossibly the
most talented athlete on the
team."
.. He swims everythina for us:
He 1trona in all the events but
he 'a still youna. He needs time
to develop." Jewell IMlded.

..They (CdM) has more good
swimmen than we do. We have
to swim way beyond our capa-
bilities to beat them," Jewell
said.
.. I'd like to give them a run
for their money, though."
Harbor's girls swim team al o
has a new coach, Bob Ro en,
and it hopes a new direction.
Rossen coached swimming at
Canon High for 2S years before
coming to Harbor.

La Fontaine is a fountain of 'total look'
Today, women strive for the
"total look," not just a mix and
match conglomeration. They
want their hair, clothing, shoes
and nails to have a complimen-
tary Look, that meshes together
in perfect harmony.
To help that look along is La
Fontaine, where a woman can
get pampered from head to toe.
Along with different techniques
of massage, facials and hair
styling~ she can get her nails done
by La Fontaine's manicurist.

Tune.;.up at Al's Garage
For many years, Harbor Arca

Now, Al's Garage is ready to

The 9SOs decor of the store has

Highlighting the entry is an

Outside the door arc two-Flying

room enough for a three-digit
purchase.
Up ln the center of the store,
commanding much attention, is
a bright red, 1954 Chevrolet Bel
Air, up on an actual garage lift.
The engine is still in the car and
the keys arc in the ignition, ready
for a night on the town. But it
would be hard to drive it out,
said store buyer Chris
Schneider. The car was driven
in first and the walls built around
it later on. It took two fork lifts
to install the car.
All around on the walls arc
what one would expect to find
in a garage, including antique oil
cans, old tires and garage signs.
Oldies play on the sound system.
The predecessor to the Moped,
the Wbizzcr bike, is also on
display, as arc two Pee Wee
Herman-style bikes.
Now that the visitor has seen
all of the decor, it's time to start
focusing on the inventory. Items

lntially the buyer was offended that, as brokers, we insisted that his
loan application require his Joan to be at "best available rate" rather
than 10.5% maximum .
Since, however, he was still negotiating on the sale of his home out of
state he thought it would be good for him to include the same phrase-
ology in that contract. (The 10.5'4 maximum allows the buyer to cancel
the transaction If the rates jump above that figure during escrow.)
Rates did jump during his escrow. The buyer of his home did try to
back out of the transaction. but could not because the contract read
"best available rate."
Aa a result, he waa able to buy his Newport Beach home without toaing
the sale of his home. In the meantime his Newport Beach home has
increased In value by about $200,500.
He thanked us many times for insisting on terminology which pro·

With such a cast. it is easy to
see how one could get caught up
in the spirit of the action. The

is a purpose other than fashion
or social statements.
The purpose is to help chil-
dren. For the Orangewood Bou-
tique is a "designeT label" thrift·
store that raises money to fund
the Orangewood Home for
abused. neglected and aban-
doned children of Orange
County.
The Orangewood Boutique
sells both original and resale
designer clothes, as well as
business attire and accessories at
a cut of 25 to 40 percent of the
normal price.
Kathryn Thompson, an
Orange County developer, orig-
inally thought of the idea to "put
together the boutique to help
fund the home," said Darla
Khacbadoorian, volunteer man-
ager of the boutique and owner
of My Girl in Corona del Mar.
"In the four months we have
been open we hav~ raised
$25,000 for the home," she said.
"Ou,.,.oal is to make as much
money as possible. All of our
inventory is donated by other
stores and designers and after
expenses all of the proceeds go
to the home."
Generous donations have
been made to the Orangewood
Boutique by My Girl, Mi Place
in Laguna Niguel, Linda Bently,
D.N. Evans and Rive Gauche,
the Yves St. Laurent store in
South Coast Plaza.
The Orangewood Home was
completed in l 98S to replace the
smaller aging Albert Sitton
Home. The new home provides
a safe refuge for nearly 3,000
children each year. The home
also houses the Nation's Hot
Line Center, which provides
emergency telephone counseling
to people in need around the
county.
After visiting the Orangewood
Home for the first time,
Khachadoorian said she would
do anything to help.
"The home is not like a insti-
tution, it's more like a big
family," she commented.

·Home of the Week·
Seaview home 1offefs view, prime lot
BY CHERYL STEHLJNG
At the top of the gated com-
munity of Seaview, is a home
located on the most prime lot.
AU of the streets are named for
America's Cup yachts and this
week's spotlighted home is 190 I
Yacht Resolute, on a comer,
with uninterrupted views of hills,
ocean, Fashion Island and
Catalina.
.. I'm impressed with the lot,
it's the prime in Seaview," said
Cathryn Tennille with George
Elkins Company, listing agent
for the home. "There is so much
privacy and a feeling of tranquil-
ity. It bas exquisite landscaping,
it's bright and sunny."
FOREVER VIEWS
The home is at the end of the
street and is accessible through
iron gates to the sweeping drive-
way. Fieldstone is used and
provides the perfect compliment
to the colorful landscaping. The
yard wraps around to the back
of the home, where the view is
the most magnificent. Patios are
abundant and one is intimately
located off the family room.
Beyond the double garage arc
the entry doors, with etched and
leaded glass. An etched and
leaded glass light is on one side
of the doors. Step into a tiled
entry,· with a chandelier over-
head. The entry stretches back
to an enclosed atrium room. The
owners have made many
upgrades and improvements on
this I 0-year-old home.
To the left of the entry is the
formal living room, with its
coffered ceiling, plush carpet
and fireplace. A built-in comer
curio cabinet with glass doors in
at the left of the fireplace.
Step beyond to the formal
dining room. This room takes
best advantage of the view, with
sliding glass doors opening on
two sides. The floor is tile and
a chandelier hangs over the
tables. One sliding glass door
leads to the backyard and the
one on the side leads to a little
sitting room, which was added.
The kitchen is accessible either
from the dining room or the
family room on the other side.
This kitchen is compact and
contains every convenient amen-
ity. Tile floors, ceramic tile
counters, all wood cabinets,
double wall-mounted ovens, one
a microwave, electric range,
triple sink with center veggie
sink and windows looking
toward the view are highlighted.
Step through a swinging door
to the family room. Right
beyond the door is an area that
may contain a table for casual
diliina or Joe ••mes. A sliding
glass door opens onto the view
and intimate patio nook. The
floor is lite and a chandelier
bangs over the table.
Beyond, in the family room,
a band of tile circumvents the
plush carpet on the peri'!'eter of
the room. A fireplace gives the
room warmth. On one wall is a
wet bar enclosed in glass, with
storage and display shelves.
Another wall also has a series
of display shelves. A sliding glass
door opens onto a room that was
once an atrium, but bas been
enclosed by the owners.
Step down to the tile floor of
the converted atrium. Skylights
and track lighting have been
added so that no .light was lost.
This is the perfect• garden room
to add greenery and maybe for
intimate dining. Another sliding
glass door from a downstain
bedroom opens onto the atrium.
To the right of the entry ball
is a bathroom, the bedroom and
a study, located off a smaller
hallway.
The bedroom may also be
used as a sitting room or den.
It bas a do\lble closet with slidina
mirrored doors. and plush ·
carpet. The slidina atass door
leads to the atrium and the
bedroom gets the full benefit of
the skylights.
A bathroom serves the bed-
room and also u the guest bath.
It bu a wood pullman with faux
marble countertop. A shower/
tub with ceramit tile is concealed
behind a curtain.
The study just beyond is richly
paneled in wood and bas a
vaulted ceiling. Built-in book-
shelv6 extend on aH the walls,
all the way up to the ceiling.
Plush carpet is used and vertical
blinds cover the comer windows
ovcrl~oking the front yard .
ff ~ ea4 of the hall is a door
leidana to a anti-room and
ataircue. Beyond that is the
·door lcadina to the 1ara1e,
where the laudry f acilitv is.
. .
UPSTAIRS LIVlNG
Back in the entry ball is the
1-ttu.pecl ataircw leadina up the
bedrooma and a jjlayroom. Win-
dows 10 all tlie way up one wall
in the stairwell.
To the left of the landing is
a bedroom suite that is an ideal
teenage retreat. The ceiling is
vaulted and windows extend all
the way up to the ceiling. The
windows have plantation shut-
ters. A double sliding mirrored
wardrobe provides much stor-asc. The private bath bas a
pullman topped with faux mar-
ble. In a separate room are the
toilet and a shower/ tub, with
ceramic tile. Just beyond the
bedroom through another door
is the bonus playroom over the
garage that was added on. Step
down to a vinyl~vcred floor.
Along one wall arc storage
~losets behind sliding doors.
Clcarstory windows supply
light. This room bas a private
staircase that was mentioned
earlier.
lbc master suite is-a study in
elegance. It is located on the view
side of the home and bas slidina
glus doors opening to a petite
balcony that takes advantage of
the view. The ceiling is vaulted
and beyond the sleeping area is
a sitting room, with built-in
bookshelves surrounded a tele-
vision alcove.
The ball leading to the master
bedroom bas three sliding mir-
rored closets for abundant stor-
age. On the right is the spectac-
ular master bath. Double sinks
arc set into a faux marble
countertop, in the all wood
pullman. A Roman tub is sur-
rounded by ceramic tile and
offers the utmost in relaxation.
There is a aeparatc stall shower
and a private toilet room.
