EJ • ,_ • a a 1. 1• THE NEWPORT ENSIGN - Edllprlll Budget hits note It is very important in this age of peer pressure, drugs and gangs for students to have creative outlets that keeps them away from these dangers. There are any variety of activities, the thing that comes to mind is athletics. Our schools are full of wonderful sports programs. But not every student has an athletic bent, so alternatives need to be found. In years past, those students could join the drama class and stage plays. Or, if they were so inclined, play a musical instrument in the school band. If they couldn't play instruments, but had passable voices, there were always the singing ensembles. But huge budget cuts over the past 10 years have all but eradicated the fine arts programs in schools. Athletics continues to thrive. We don't advocate cutting athletic programs, but we don't think fine arts programs should suffer, either. Take for example the Newport Harbor High School Band, which recently returned from a tour in Hawaii. The band boasts 46 members, but director Ken Owen said the numbers will dwindle as musical instrument classes are no longer offered in elementary school. Because Owen doesn't want to see that happen, he has started an after school class for fifth and sixth graders at Newport Heights Elementary, in an effort to breathe life into the music progr;µn. We commend Owen for his efforts and hope that his enthusiasm is contagious. Letters to the Editor Kudos to Jacobson Dear tAlitor: Dr. Nicoll was entirely correct in the reassignment of Tom Jacobson to Corona dcl Mar High School. Unfortunately, Newport Harbor High School was not so lucky. As longtime neighbors of Corona del Mar High School, we have been subjected to the neglect of civic pride and housekeeping in the parking lots and adjacent property of Corona del Mar High School. The students arc litter-kings: Beer-bottle , glass. fast food, cans, etc. But the prior administration did not respond. The litter remained each night and most week.ends. The condition pre-dates Prop. 13. Mr. Jacobson has been more responsive. This should be a student council pride project. Also. more trategically located trash cans. Mr. Jacob on. Thanks. Calvin G.
