BBC gets approval for loan
BY MELINDA KELLER
With little fanfare, the Balboa
Bay Club received final approval
Monday night to use their lease
with the City of Newport Beach
as partial security for a $30
million loan.
Newport Beach City Council-
membcrs voted 6-0 to approve
the transaction that they earlier
postponed because of monetary
concerns. .
Mayor Pro Tern Ruthelyn
Plummer, who was absent from
this week's meeting, bad earlier
expressed concerns that the city
would be short changed if the
club defaulted on their loan.
Club rents generate an estimated
SI million annually for the city.
Balboa Bay Club President
William Ray told the council
that the IS year loan will go
towards repaying an existing
debt that was in danger of
default. The remaining monies
will be used to hire an architect
and consultant for the club's
controversial redevelopment
project that has yet to come
before the council for final
approval.

Be Prepared
Many lessons were learned in the wake of last
week's earthquake, which was centered in Newport
Beach. Even though the temblor only measured a
4.6, small by earthquake st~ndards, it shook up the
general populace and made everyone question
whether or not they are ready for the Big One.
Judging from the behavior of some people last .
week, it looks as if we have more learning and
preparing to do. And, we could learn a lot from
how the children at the schools fa red.
Because the quake occurred along the New'port-
lnglewood Fault, the same one res'ponsible for the
devastating 1933 Long Beach Earthquake, experts
caution that this area is more vulnerable to extensive
damage and loss of life than if it occurred along
the San Andreas Fault. That is due to the high
population and the instability of sandy, wet soil.
Experts nave been saying that this area is due
for a shaker estimated to measure 8.3 on the Richter
Scale and one question Harbor Area residents
should ask themselves is, "How well am I prepared?"
Last week, an Ensign report.er was having lunch
at a restaurant when the quake hit. She report.e~
that people were screaming and instead .of ducking .
under the tables, ran out of the building. There
·were many other reports of people running out of
buildings. That is the worse thing anyone can do.
The Newport-Mesa Unified School District holds
monthly earthquake drills and all of the youngsters
acted in a remarkable way last week, officials said.
There was no panicking, no running out of
buildings. We could take a lesson from those kids.
Earthquake expert Joe Foraker said homeowners
never can be too prepared. Bookshelves and water
heaters should be anchored to the walls. And
anything valuable that is apt to get broken should
not just be sitting on a table, as some Harbor Area
residents found out.
One way to see how one should be prepared is
to go to any lectures or seminars on the subject.
Last week, the City of Irvine held an all-day uRc;ady
or Not"" expositio~ and another will be held today
at Le Meridien Hotel. For the remainder of the
month, which is Earthquake Preparedness Month,
there are many expositions throughout Orange
County. We strongly urge everyone's participation.

CdM in rematch w·ith Trojans today
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
While most of Newport Beach
was still reeling from Friday's
earthquake, Corona del Mar
High 's baseball team was dealing
with a small-scale disaster of its
own.
Tustin High's batters shook
and rattled Sea Kings' pitching
for 14 hits en route to a 10-3
wm.
For Cd M it was third straight
league loss following a promis-
ing start this season. Up next for
the Sea Kings is University today
at 3: IS p.m. in an away game.
rThe Sea Kings• pitcher Rich
Mather limited Tustin to only
one run over the first five innings
and Cd M held a 2-1 lead into
the sixth inning.
"'Mather, who was charged ~
with the loss, worked out of jams
in the first and fourth innings.
However, CdM's game plan
started to unravel in the sixth.
Mather walked the first two
batters and was removed from
the game. Left-hander Matt UCI II THIE _ II "'1 ..., 111111'• lrll --
Goldstein came in walked the
first batter and then gave up a Ill Tllll 111111 .._ __
single to Tustin's Chad Faltz
which resulted in two runs. ~
Things only went from bad to
worse after that as the next
Tustin batter followed with a
single and CdM's shortstop
couldn't field a bard hit
grounder.
The Sea Kings went on to
surrender ~ight runs to the
Tillers in the inning destroying
their bid for a upset.
In the final inning, CdM
scored a run when Greg Haack
singled, reached second on a
passed ball and was brought in
on Todd Kehrli's two-out dou-
ble. But the Sea Kings• next
batter flied out to left field to
end the threat
"'We were in the game and
then Tustin had a big inning,"
remarked Corona del Mar
Coach Jerry Jelnick. "The same
thing happened to us against
Estancia. We've got to eliminate
our mistakes... (Cd M fell to
Estancia 6-3 last week).
"We're a young team that
plays hard. But we don' have
a senior oriented team that
knows how to reverse situations
like we bad against Tustin,"
Jclnick added. "Mather pitched
well for us. He had some bad
breaks."
Several factors stand out in
the Sea Kings loss. CdM
couldn't get a handle on Tustin 's
bitters using-a total of five
pitchers in the game. The Sea
Kings also committed thr~e
costly errors and even though
they had seven bits in the game,
tney couldn't tum in a big inning
of their own.
..We need to be more consist-
ent in our bitting. We have a
couple guys get some bits and
then the next game theyll strike '
out," he said.
Haack scored all of the Sea
Kinp runs as he went 3 for 4.
with two singles and a solo home
run in the fifth inning. Freshman
Todd Kehrli also had two hits
and two RBI.
Errors prove costly in Sailors' loss

Parity is the word around Sea View
BY GEORGE PAPPA
When it come to tcnni it'
bard to find a league a
con istently competitive in
Orange County as the Sea View
League is year after year.
For proof you needn't look
any further that the C IF 4A
Division rankings.
Currently, three teams from
the league arc ranked in the top
10 in C IF~ Corona del Mar (No.
4 ranking), Newport Harbor
(No.5) and University (No.6).
Once again it appears the race
for the league tennis crown wiJl
be a close one.
.. It's been that way for the last
three years," Harbor Tennis
Coach Charlie Bleiker com-
mented. "The same three teams
go to the playoffs. No one is out
of it. There iS only a couple
points diff crence between our
teams."
However. Corona del Mar
appears to be the team to beat
as they remain undefeated in
four league games and arc in first
place
tJ niversity (3-1 in league
action) defeated H arbor last
week to move into second place.
Harbor (2-2) has lo~t to Univer-
sity and CdM recently.
But the Sea View title is still
up for grabs as the three teams
will meet again in the second
part of league action.
"We're in striking range the
second time around. We still
trying to put it all together,
though," Blcilccr said.
On April 19. crosstown rivals,
CdM and Harbor, will meet in
a rematch.
Corona dcl Mar has most
balance and depth in the league.
The Sea Kings' strength is in
their doubles teams but they also
have a decent ingle lineup.
.. Doubles, that's the key to our
team.· Corona dcl Mar Tennis
Coach Dave Heffern remarked.
"We don't have great single
player . All my guys are about
the same in ability. Right now
we can't get points in singles. We
need someone to step fOTward
among our singles players in the
same manner as our double
players have if we .arc to beat
the two top teams in C IF (Bev-
erly Hills and Santa Barbara).
The Sea Kings (9-3 overall)
lost to Beverly Hills (No. 2 in
C I F) in preseason action.
CdM's top do ubles players
include the team of senior co-
captains Rob Atlcjo and Doug
Schulcin, senior Bob Etibar and
j unior Alex McClintock and
sophomore Ken Alston (a
transfer from Texas) is paired
with Justin Zillman.
The ea King · ingle players
are David Bain. nior Richard
Han, !.Op homore Jamie Kat1-
man and enior Jared Manion.
By contra t. Harbor ha a
trong single. group led_ by
returner Chris Rabbit and junior
Breu Hansen-Dent.
··Both arc solid players,"
Bleikcr aid. "Rabbit is a little
better than he was last eason.
Brett ha come along.also ...
Still, the Sailors (6-4 overall)
are missing one of their top
singles players from last year,
Billy Hanson. Prior to the match
with CdM earlier this season,
Hanson was kicked off the team
for disciplinary reasons.
Blciker wouldn't comment on
the incident but he admitted
Han on ·s absence has left a hole
in team's singles lineup.
"'It makes a big difference. We
don' have anyone who can
replace him (811ly Hansen) th1
eason." Blciker !!iatd.
Sophomore Jordan Jacob .
who played· on last year' Junior
varsity. has played in Hansen·
spot thi cason.
••Jacob is a good player but
he's not near as tough as H anscn.
He need more experience on the
court, .. Blciker said.
The Sailorb have a very good
doubles team in Jaime Hardin _
and Chase Warmington, who
played on la t year's team.
Hardin and his brother Mike
Hardin (who graduated) made
up one of the be t doubles team
in C IF last year. ·
Seniors Scott Henderson and
1 Rudy Thurston have also shown
promise in doubles competition
this season.

_, Tale of the Whale
The world-renown Balboa
Pavilion is a familiar landmark
that locals are very proud of. It
has a long and rich history,
beginning in 1905, when it was
constructed. The imposing
structure was the only thing
around for miles and .today, its
cupola still stands out, even
though it is now surrounded
with buildings.
The Pavilion has been the
scene of many firsts, including
the first Surfboard Riding
Championship Race in 1932 and
world-famous Festival of Lights
celebration, held in December
since 1908.
The enormous ballroom
upstairs with the spectacular bay
view has hosted the likes of
Count Basie, Benny Goodman
and Stan Kenton. It was the
birthplace of swing and became
known as the Balboa Hop.
The Annual Flight of the
Trees Restaurant in Corona
del Mar was opened five years
ago by Russell and Abbey Arm-
strong and named for the huge
trees in a central atrium that the
original structure was built
around.
"The original building was a
house, .. said Russell Armstrong.
The house was sold in 1958
for use as a commercial building
and Armstrong said he has had
the last owner of the house in
for dinner.
Local residents may
remember the building as once
housing the Pirate's Inn.
But at Trees, customen will
enjoy a true taste of Americana.
The restaurant has been bailed
by Elmer Dills of KABC as
having ... he best meat loaf in
Oranae County." It was awarded

Antonio Winery, Coggeshal/

items guests could vie for.·
Following a gourmet buffet
dinner was the highlight, a
live auction, emceed by Jim
Roberts. The biggest ticket
item was a gold record
donated by Righteous
Brother Bobby Hatfield.
After a bidding war between
three men, it sold to Larry
Wecshoff for $4,JOO.
.. I figure the otben will
donate money somewhere
Claaof '84
down the line." Weeshoff
said. "I might as well get
something for my donation.
My grandchildren will enjoy
this someday."
Hatfield was on hand to
present the gold record,
which he received for .. You~e
Lost That Lovin' Feeling"
and he entertained the crowd
with a few bars of"Unchaincd
Melody."
Other items donated for the
live auction were a Mammoth
Vacation, photo session from
John Blom, brunch and har-
bor cruise at the Cannery
Restaurant and a member-
ship at the Sports Club of
Irvine, to name a few.
The decor for the cvenin1
embodied the essence of the
'60s. Surfboards, a lifeguard
stand and a "Luv Bug,.,
painted with such slogans as
.. Woodstock or Bust,"04Make
Love, Not War" and peace
signs helped to create
ambience. And Papa Do Run
Run 's renditions of '"Surfin
U.S .A ." and .. California
Girls" helped to round things

I had to learn them all at once.
it wourd be mind-boggling."
Harris started her career in
Scottsdale, Arizon~ with her
husband, Bob, a developer. In
all of her years, Harris has seen
many changes, including the
steadily escalating prices.
... don't remember the year,
but I sold the most expensive

for $250,000, with an 8,000
square-foot ~ousc, helicopter
pad, five acres· of land and a
pool. At that time, the average
home cost $25,000 ...
Harris has always worked
with high-end clients and she
carried that over when the family
moved to Newport Beach almost
11 years ago. She first opened
her own office, working by

her client if she joined Coldwell
Banker, a move that she has
never regretted. She has made
the Pre ident's Club every year.
Originally from Iowa, Harris
said her family vi itcd Arizona
many times when she was a
child. It was beneficial to her
father•s health. She and Bob
raised their two children there.
They discovered bow much
they liked Newport Beach dur-
ing the vacations they would
take in the summer.
.. We would come here when
the kids were three and five, to
get out of the heat." she said.
"The kids could play right there
on the sand and we could watch
them. And everything was close,
like Disneyland . .,
She would sometimes stay
with the children and Bob would
take trips ba~k to his job.
Harris said that real estate is
just one of tho e businesses she
took to. She attributes much of
her success to her like for people.
And that all started when she
worked as an airline stewardess
before she was married.
All of her bu inc s is repeat
and referrals. And she only
works in Newport Beach and
will ref er anywhere else out to
another colleague.
Anoth« aspect Harris adds to
her formula for success is that
she has had exposure to every
f acct of real estate. She started
out working for her developer
hu band. so she knows how to
subdivide land. Her brother-in-
law was a well-known real estate
attorney in the Southwest. so she
learned much about that.

Harri believes that her big-
gest accomplishment doesn't lie
in the real estate field, however.
"My greatest accomplishment
is raising my two kids." she said.
And succes runs in the fam-
ily. Her son is the president of
a development company locally
and her daughter is a represen-
tative for St. John's Knits in the
South.
When Harris is not out busily
negotiating transactions or
showing property, she enjoys
spending time with Bob and
taking in the beach life. They arc
planning a 34th anniversary trip

Why do community associa-

best insurance against possible
deterioration of a neighbor-
hood. They allow the entire
community to speak in one voice
and to have an influence on the
general character and condition
of a neighborhood . Many
homeowner , however. become
impatient with the concept from
time to time. Example:
Yo ur relatives have j4St

your homeowners' association."
"According to our Association
by-laws, campers and mobile
homes arc not to be parked
overnight on our streets ...
You know he is reading right
o ut of the by-laws, but you
. resent being told about it-
couldn 't they make an excep-
tion, since your rclati\les only
visit every fourth year?
We arc occa ionally irritated
by what ec m at times to be
unrea onable restrictions. On
the other hand, one has only to
drive through a neighborhood
whic1' has no associatio n (or a
weak one), to realize what can
be the alternative: junked cars,
three trucks parked peqnancntly
in front of our homes, noncon-
forming additions to the house
which make the neighborhood
look like a mish-mash of styles,
and plain old "deterioration ...
Last year we listed a beautiful

a call from a Laguna Beach
brokcr-"ls that neighborhood
zoned for horses?" he asked.
Startled over the question, we
answered him in the negative.

homeowners' regulations. For
this reason the owner was able
to bring the police into the
picture.
And, if the homeowner thinks
the association is imposing
undue restrictions. he has an
alternative. He can apply for
board members hip and offer his ·
,,,
input as a member. Usually
though, the homeowners who
violate the rules which arc
acceptable to most members of
an as ociation arc the last to
participate on a homeowners'
board.
If you arc on the fence about
such matters, consider this about
those board members whose job
it is to enforce the by-laws of
the association: Their vigilance
puts money in your pocket-or
at least increases the value of
your estate. Without that vig-
ilance, your home can lose some
of its value. Even if you keep
up your home, the condition of
your neighbors' homes can cause
yours to appreciate or depre-
ciate.
