BY CHERYL STERLING
A f cw years ago, the City of
Newport Beach decided to
provide a trolley service during
the summer. But these .. trolleys ..
were really nothing more than
buses fixed up to resemble
trolleys; they d id not run on
ttacks and there was no over-
head wire.
But Newport Beach once did
have a trolley, as long-time
residents might remember. It
was the Pacific Electric line, on
which the Big Red Cars ran, a
familiar sight down the middle
of Balboa Boulevard to the
tcminus beyond the Pavilion. In
fact, the Red Cars were
responsible for the first real
estate boom of Newport Beach,
according to Corona dcl Mar
resident Spencer Crump, author
of .. Ridc the Big Red Cars."Tbc
book is a virtual bible, with a
wealth of information about this
transport mode of the past.
Pacific Electric service began
in Los Angeles 1895 and found
its way down to Newport Beach
in 1905 and to Balboa in 1906.
Many old photos hanging in the
Pavilion show a Red Car
stopped near the building, with
the little changing sheds in the
foreground. Service ceased in
this area in the I 940s, something
that many area residents lament.
Crump said.
Most of the Red Cars found
their way to scrap yards, but
some were rescued by museums
from all over the country. Not
far away in Perris, in Riverside
County, an authentic Red Car,
which ran on the Newport/
Balboa Linc, still lives. The
wood-sided car, built in 1913,
bas been meticulously restored
to mint condition and runs at
the Orange Empire Railway
Museum. It will be in operation
this weekend at the museum's
annual Rail Festival, which
draws visitors from all over the
countcy. The museum is located
at 2201 S. "A" Street, phone,
6572605.
Crump is a member of the
museum because of his interest
in preservation of these old cars.
But he would like to sec some
kind of trolley service resur-
rected in Orange County.
..It would sure solve our traffic
headaches,•• he said. .0 we
wouldn't need to build new
freeways and it would cut down
on smog."
Crump grew up in Belmont
Shores and has fond memories
of riding the Red Can on every
route it took, from Los Angeles
to San Bernardino County. He

Crime to pay for cops
BY MELINDA KELLER
Crime just might pay off for
the ewport Beach Police
Department this summer af a
recently convicted teacher as
ordered to forfeit his assets.
Last December pohce and
federal agents seized more than
Sl. l million in cash, a 52-foot
racing. yacht, gold coins worth
$23,000, a Porsche and a M asa-
rati from former Edison High
School science teacher James
· Hoyland ih cQnncction with a
money laundering indictment.
Although Hoyland was sent-
enced to serve three years in
federal prison, the civil forfeiture
proceedings of his seized assets
has not yet been completed.
Newport Beach Police Spo-
kespenon Bob Oakley said the
department stands to gain about
$400,000 if Hoyland is ordered
to relinquish his money, boat
and cars.
· The money will go into the
asset forfeiture fund to be used
in narcotic enforcement, Oakley
said.
Hoyland was convicted two
weeks ago by U.S. District Judge
Edward Rafeedie of six felony
counts of laundering money
through various Orange County
fi.nancial institutions, incl udin~
the Bank of Newport and the
Corona del Mar branche of
Bank of America and Sccuntv
Pacific National Bank. ·
Assisted by the U.S . oa t
Guard, the Newport Beach
Police Department and the Long
Beach Police Department, the
Internal Revenue Service was
able to track Hoyland's deposits
throughout Orange County.
U.S. Attorney Stephen Wolfe.
who prosecuted the case, said it
was proved at the trial that
Hoyland structured transactions
with several banks to evade
federal currency reporting
requirements. By ·depositing less
than $10,000 a transaction,
Hoyland was able to escape
noticing the IRS, as financial
institutions arc only required to
report deposits of $10,000 or
more. Authorities said that
$105,000 went unreported dur-
ing a nine-month pcriDd in 1987.
Hoyland is currently free on
$400.000 bail pending review of
his conviction.

Hail to secretaries ·.
Various holidays have been set aside to honor
individuals in history, such as Washington's and
Lincoln's birthdays, Veteran's Day and Memorial
Day. Mother's Day and Father's Day arc just
around the· comer.
But there is one ·individual who is very deserving
and who finally got an honor day, which turned
into a week, a few years ago. That individual is
the secretary.
Secretary's Day was founded by someone who
realized the value of these hardworking people, who
arc mostly women. But, unfortunately, some
secretaries are overlooked or treated as badly as
the average clerical worker.
Most generally do not realize that behind every
successful executive is an ever better secretary.
The position of secretary has had a stigma
attached to it for many years. She has been stereo-
typed as a bubble-headed female who reads
Harlequin Romances on her lunch hour and whose
greatest ambition it to date the boss.
This image is helped along by portrayals on
television and in the movies. What is not understood
is the secretary does more .than make coffee, gossip
a the water cooler or file i1er-fingcmails at her
desk.
She is responsible for tciking all of her boss's
messages and making up excuses when be or she
does not want to talk on the phone to a caller.
She has to be ready to put on a smile when a visitor
is in the office, even if she is having a bad day.
She must have a pleasant telephone voice and be
able to communicate. She must be ready to drop
what she is doing to run errands. She has to be
a flawless typist and be able to brace herself when
petty problems are brought her way.
In short, she is the nerve center and representative
of her department.
Hats off to secretaries of the world, on this, their
week. Without them, work would be much harder
for the bosses of the world.

Letters to the Editor
-Another-cr-ash_:iS-inevita.bl~
Dear Editor:
The airplane crash in East-
bluff that wiped out a young
Canadian f amity was statisti-
cally inevitable. Equally inevit-
able is a crash of a large com-
mercial jet in our city. It will
happen out of John Wayne
Airport (JW A), the fifth busiest
airport in the nation. Doublirlg
the number of commercial
flights out of JW A next year also
doubles the chances of a major
jct aircrash in Newport Beach.
The crash site of a commercial
jct airliner will not be confined
to an area only the size of two
tennis courts. Residents of New-
port Beach were very fortunate
there were no lives on the ground
lost this time.
The decision to expand a tiny
geacral aviation airport to a
commercial facility in a highly
populated area was irresponsible
to begin with. There were open,
unpopulated areas of Orange
County at the time, but it would
have been more expensive to
build a remote airport, access
roads needed to be built, etc. To
double commerical flights next
year out of JW A is additionally
irresponsible. To continue to
route aircraft over the most
densely populated areas of New-
port Beach is patently inexcus-
able.
I have a large file consisting
of letters written by residents of
Eastbluff, Sea Island. Irvine
Terrace, Balboa Island and
Balboa Peninsula to the city of
Newport Bech, Orange County.
the Federal Aviation Adminis-
tration (FAA), and our state
senator. We have a petition
signed by almost 3,000 residents
demanding that the dangerous
route and take off procedures be
re~xamincd.
The deep power cut back one
nautical mile after take off is
outdated with the new stage
three aircraft now departing
JWA and, according to a recent
study funded by the city of
Newport Beach. actually causes
more noise by keeping commer-
cial aircraft low over Newport
Beach. More importantly it
severely decreases the pilots'
emergency power in case of
engine failure thus increasing the
risk of a crasla. The outdated
takeoff procedures also call for
a tum to the left in the upper
bay, routing aircraft toward .,
Eastbluff. This routes commer-
cial jets i front of small aircraft .
departing the shorter runway to
their left. The current procedure
then routes the commercial jets
over the most populated areas
of Newport Beach! All danger-
ous, unnecessary, outdated
procedures.

CdM's big· inning torpedoes Sailors
BY GEORGE PAPPAS
After taking a beating, cour-
tesy of their Sea View League
opponents for much of the
season, Corona del Mar and
Newport Harbor High's baseball
teams turned their frustrations
on each other last week.
Both teams benefited from the
recent two-game showdown.
Harbor took their first league
game (April 19), but Cd M
retaliated with a 12-5 rout of the
' Sailors last Friday. snapping a
six-game losing streak. (CdM is
in fifth place in the league
standings with little or no chance
of reaching postseason play).
.. We took out some frustra-
tions today,.. remarked Cd M
Coach Jerry Jelnick ... It was just
what the doctor ordered. The
bottom of our order bit today.
It's nice when those guys hit
because it takes the pressure off
the other guys."
The Sea Kings' batting attack
was led by Greg Haack (3 for
3 with a three-run homer. a
double, three runs scored and 4
RBI), and freshman Todd Kdt-
rli, (2 for 4 with a three-run
homer and 4 RBI).
Kehrli leads the CdM with 21
RBI this season.

a big lead that's fine. It was nice

The Sea Kings' offensive
awakening couldn't have come
at a better time with CdM (3-
6 in league action) facing Sad-
dleback today at 3 p.m. in an
away g4me.
The Roadrunners massacred
the Sea Kings, 20-3, earlier this
season.
..Saddleback punished us last
time, .. Jelnick recalled. '"We're
going to get them this time.••
The Sea Kings' will throw
pitchers Rich Mather, Gold-
stein, and J .T. Patton against tbe
Roadrunners which arc led by
the batting efforts of Jeff Blanco,
among others. Saddle back's
hurler Mike Arroyos should also
see some action against the Sea
King .
Harbor's team, the league's
last place team, also draws a
tough assignment this week
when they go agaiDJt the Estan-
cia Eagles• team, which is con-
tending for the league title. The

game, Brande made some
adjustment • shifting Perkin to
right side of the net and moving
Price from the setter to the

worked.
..We noticed that they (Uni-

Perkin over there to get the ball
to him a often as we could. We

the back to set so Ty could hit

R-rated fun at Irvine Community .Theater
BY CHERYL STEHLING
When potential theatergoers
see the title of Irvine CommuJ1ity
Theater's current production, it
might give them pause. After all,
"My Husband's Wild Desires
Almost Drove Mc Mad·· is a bit
suggestive. But the show is aptly
named and those wishing to see
it should be warned that it is
adult subject matter, not recom-
mended for children.
Irvine Community theater
prides itself with its long list of
ri que productionl>, beginning in
1973 with ~'What the Butler
Saw." And that opened the
group to .. going against tradi-
tional community theater grain"
with r-ratcd production~. that
only rival those of Garden Grove
Community Theater.

This madcap sex farce is
enjoying a very successful run
and it is easy to sec why. It is
a laugh a minute.
The play involves a middle-
agcd couple, the Griffins, who
lave in Manhattan. He is a
businessman with a ballbearing
company and is quite often out
of town. She is hitting ~er sexual
peak and is frustrated bccau e
her husband appear to be
lacking in the way of amour.
So they have employed the use
of a book which encourage~
couples to act out their fantac;1es.
not matter how wild or outlan-
dish they might seem. The Grif-
.fins enlist the aid of the hum-
bling building superintendent.
whom they have found o ut get~
his kicks by crouching on the fire
escape and looking in bathroom
windows. They have proof of his
escapes in the form of pictures.
There is only one catch. Mr.
Griffin must watch the seduction
of his wif c while hiding in the
closet, dressed in drag.
But it doc n't begin there. The
curtain opens on a would-be
burglar rifling the Griffin·
bedroom. About to be caught,
he dashes into a closet.
Mrs. Griffin, scantily clad. is
trying to get the building
~uperintendent , Connelly. to fix
the radiator in the bedroom.
And that'~ where the fun begins.
Connelly doesn•t know that Mr.
Griffin is hiding in the o ther

Brazil's Painting puts works of art o~ walls
Although residential hou e
painting is the bread and butter
of Brazil's Painting Company,
the specialty work that owner
Ron Brazil can do is spectacular.
In addition to professional
interior and exterior house
painting, Brazil has the ability
to customiie your home by using
specialty techniques such as wall
glazing. raging, trompe l'oeil,
marbeling~ patinas and grainina.
Brazil, who has been in the
business for more than a decade,
said be initially got into house
painting while going to school
for his subsequent degree in
photography.
.. My father retired from the
police force and I worked with
him/' said Brazil. 0 Then I
worked for a commercial outfit
for a few yean and eventually
went out on my own."
But after mastering the basic
techniques, Brazil said he
became bored and went to San
Francisco, where he enrolled in
art classes and studied tromp
l'oeil, a realistic form of painting
that literally translates to 4'ool
the eye."
The experience has served him
well, as he now has the skill and
talent to "do whatever the cu -
tomer wants, whether it's vistas,
landscapes, seascapes. niches,
trellises. skies with clouds,
sandstone effects and even geo-
metrics."'
His background in art also
enables him to fully customize
a room by taking bits and pieces
from carpeting, fabrics and even
stone, and creating colors to
enhance the general surround-
ings.
Brazil's expertise and atten-
tion to detail have resulted in
more-than-satisfied customers
such as Richard Ebline, of the
Burnett-Ehline Development
Co., who said, "I found Ron to
be a professional person who
was efficient, trustworthy and
performed an outstanding job in
an expedient manner."'
Tom and Evan Corkett, of
Newport Beach, also expressed
their satisfaction. "Ron Brazil,

The Fountain Valley ware-

amazed by the amount and

Mike Edelstein said Belmont
features everything from rental

Enjoying immense popularity
right now is berber carpet.
Formerly, berber was associated
with wool, but the use of nylon
has not only made berber afford-
able, but has increased in the
durability. Customers would~

difference between a wool or
nylon berber.
Belmont f catures such names
in carpet as Lee, Mohawk,

bus, Coronet, Burlington and
Fabrica to name just a few.
Edelstein said that most carpets
found at Belmont are the stain-
treatcd type. which means that
something spilled on it is easily
wiped up and no stain is left.
Belmont can do custom
ceramic work and such names
as Del Piso, quamagra, Oliviero

The bathtub liners were devel-
oped more than 12 years ago for
the hotel industry as an answer
to the problems encountered
with the refinishing and re-
glazing of bathtubs. Refinishing
involves applying a thin layer of
epoxy paint over the porcelain.
Because it is paint, it is vulner-
able to water and cleansers used
on the paint would eat it up like
sandpaper would.
"We cost more than refinish-
ing, yet cost less than it would
be for a new tub," Conder said.
"But Bathtub liners arc a peT-

The staff is happy to take

Belmont has gained such a good

Hologram mystique
If you arc thinking of making
a truly unique decorating state-
ment or arc faced with a
difficult-to-fill 'dead space' in
your home that you don't quite
know what to do with, Newport
Hologram may have just the
solution.
According to owner David C.
Schaffner, holograms, thrcc-
dimcnsional images produced
and exposed on film by laser, can
present such an exact copy of
its subject that the only diff cr-
cnce between the two is that you
simply cannot touch the image
in the hologram.
.. The cff cct given by a holo-
gram is too bard to describe, you
have to see it yourself,"' said
Schaffner, .. but the possibilities
fm:..crcativc use are limitJcss."'
lbe selections offered at New-
port Hologram substantiate that
claim, f caturing artworks that
run from the every day to the
truly novel. There are contem-
porary geometric designs as well
as classical reproductions such
as Head of Minerva, a piece
commissioned by a museum in
Bath, England.
For nature lovers, there arc
images of seashells, landscapes
and a multitude of animals that
arc so realistic, they could
almost substitute for the real
thing-a perfect solution for pct
lovers who arc too busy to find
the time to feed and exercise the
living variety. An aquarium
scene docs everything but pro-
vide the sound of bubbles find-
ing their way to the surf acc.
Schaffner suggested usi ng
holograms such as Sleight of
Hand, where balls between the
fingers of a magician's hand
appear and disappear according
to viewing angle, to add interest
to a game room. Cuc Ball, a
depiction of hands in the act of
shooting billiards, would be
another example, giving the
impression that the cue ball is
about to be knocked into the
room.
And for children's rooms,
there arc wondcrf ul depictions
of the Mad Hatter and Alice in
the Looking Glass.
Schaffner acknowledged that
one of his favorites is Mime, a
hologram that depicts a mime
trying to find his way out from
behind glass ... If you recessed
this image in a wall, the effect
would be dramatic. It would
appear that the mime was actu-
ally trying to find a way out of
the wall,"' Schaffner said.
Newport Hologram special-
izes in reflective holograms,
which arc taken from real
objects on a one-to-one ratio,
with the size of the object
dct,crmining the size of the
hologram, thus making the
image that much more realistic.
This is in contrast to embossed
holograms, the type found on
credit cards and stickers, that arc
generally graphic ilJustrations
that lack three-dimensional real-
ism.
Prices range from $5 to S 1,000
and arc determined by s uch
variables as the uniqueness or
size of the subject matter, the
type of laser used and whether
the image is on film or glass. with
glass higher in quality but more
limited in supply. Customers can
commission custom work, how-
ever Schaffner stated that the
cost can be prohibitive.
While all holograms at New-
port Hologram arc framed
behind unbord crcd glass,
Schaffner said be can help with
·NE .WPORT

Most of Newport Hologram's
business has ~n a result of
word-of mouth, with repeat cus~
tomcrs bringing f ricnds as well.

She said that since she has
worked on the islands. she has

Kasden-Rosenc Interior
Design, located next to Lido
l~1and , as fast becoming noted
fo r its unique an distinctive
embrace of marble with a wide
variety of interior styles.
Combining beautiful marbles
from around the world with one-
o f-a-k ind pieces, Kasdene-
Rosene literally molds a unique
interior around the individual
personalities that will inhabit it.
And the customer's response to
this dynamic approach has been
equally impressive: Kasdene-
Rosene's growing customer list
reads like the .. Who's Who" of
Newport and other prestigious
Southland communities.
Kasdene-Roscne features dis-
plays and information on a
variety of marble products
including marble flooring and
tiles, as well as a variety of
distinctive fireplace mantels,
pullmans, vanities-, and decora-
tive pieces.
On the subject of incorporat-
ing marble into an interior

said ... We've found that in a lot
of cases the right marble can
make a tremendous diff ercnce in
the dramatic effect of the room
that it i in. Marble is versatile
to work with as the ranae of
colors and •patterns' arc almost
limitless. We strive to not just
incorporate marble into an
interior, but to incorporate the
right marble in the right amount
into an interior."
Kasden-Rosene commonly
works with marble from Italy.
Spain. Mexico, Chin' South
America. and Portugal. But
Kasden-Roscnc has an extensive
international network for pro-
curing marble and can secure its
clients an advantageous price for
marble from anywtierc in the
world.
About living with marble.
Rosene warned. "Once marble is
installed, it is easy to maintain.
But the installation itself
requires a specialist. We don't
advise that a client go out and
pick up marble from a retail
store, without thoroughly know-
ing the capabilities of the one
that installs it ...
According to Rosene. getting
the optimum results witb marble
requires extensive training. She
noted that htr formal training
started with ASID (American
Society of Interior Designen)
and has continued ever since. To
become a member of ASID, a
designer must have I 0 years
combination of schooling and
experience, plus pass a 'CQmprc-
hensive 10-bour test. The ASID
is widely considere<I to be the
most prestigious program as its
completion requires extensive
drafting. design, and art exper-
tise.
. Rosene concluded by saying,
.. Marble isnl riaht for every
interior, but its u5e can some-
times literally elevate the interior
(or exterior) of a distinctive
mansion or home on to the level
of living art... ·

At Carpet Bazaar in Irvine,

Jennifer Harriss, Brandon ·s

What , the owner (ultimate
seller) must take into consider-
ation, though. is that frequently
this type of very penonaliud
improvement in the home docs
not necessarily add to its value.
In an area such as Newport
Beacb, or any other desirable
residential community, a seller
must be made aware of the value
of bis home primarily as to its
location-its value to be

improvement will do to the value
of the home when it comes time
for resale.
We are frequently asked our
opinion as to the wisdom (from
a value penpcctivc) of putting
a second story on a home. Where
is it located? Are there other
second story homes in the area?
Are they selliq1 Most areas in
Newport and the surrounding
communities can justify a ltJCObd

our neighborhoods are very
expensive and always increasing
in hQme siz.cs and home values.
On the other hand, some
improvements such as pools,
patio coven, sun porches,' etc .
may create a situation which will
make the home more diff 1eult to
sell.
A good ru&M>f-thumb is that
if. in considering a given
improvement in the home, look
to the number of yean you will
be enjoying that particular
improvement. A SIS,000 sun
room will not be too expensive
an undertaking if one spreads
the coats over IS years of satis-
faction. On the other hand, after
IS years such an improvement
may be completely obsolete and
serve u a handicap in seUiaa the

such as an architect can aiYe, will
help to avoid such obsoletcencc.
