Cigarette butts. beer bottles. wood timbers. styrof oam hamburger containers and other such flotsam commonly found in the bay. were tossed in so that Bill Hamilton could demon- strate his brainchild. the Hamilton Water Rake. Hamilton. owner of The Cannery Restaurant. is also the founder of Clean Harbor Day. so it was a natural that the retired engineer would try to make cleaning up the bay a little simpler. Alona with long-time f ricnd and New- port Beach business-owner Art Groa1ky. he put his idea to work and the nd result was the water rake. I can still remember the cold icy feeling I had when 1 was afraid I was pregnant. I had a boyfriend who bad inspired me with lofty ideals. We were going to go into politics together and help people. Unfortunately we were not so knowledgeable about binh control. Now I was driving to my family doctor and cryi ng in my little VW . I wa afraid he would tell my parents. The year was 1966: I was a transfer student taking my first two _yea rs at Lo.ng-1kacb_City_ College and planning to transfer to UC Irvine. I was saving money for tuition and making good grades. I was going to be a teacher. Although I was enchanted by this boy's global knowledge and his ability to speak French, he was not a marriage partner, nor did I want to get married at 18. The doctor examined me and looked disapproving. He said it was too early to tell and tarted to call my parents. "No, please don't." I said. "111 call them myself." I used one of his office phones and called my mother. At the last minute I decided I had to lie. I told her I was studying at Long Beach tate. Something in my voice told her this wasn't true. and the call end ed up with my putting her on the line to our doctor. I can till remember hi word . My mother mentioned something about borrowing money and fl yi ng to Scandina- via. To this day I have no idea how he decided on that area of the world. I was isolated at home, and aJI my friends could do was tell me maybe I hould ge t married. My period came two week late to the day. I had just had dental work and went off to take not have agreed to get married anyway, and I don't now w 1c cour e would have been worse. but l think I do. The next time pregnancy wa~ on my mind was when my husband and I were trying to have a child. Now I focused on cycles once again. but this time with joy and anticipation. In a moment of irony I met my old boyfriend in the parking lot of a upcrmarket near UC Irvine a few years ago. I was ix month pregnant with a much- wantcd child . We had a friendly chat. I was counseling and he was a grad student in a new major. He still wasn't my type. I concluded as we paned. It occurred to me that had thing turned out a bit d iffer- ently, I could have been married to him. I am gratcf ul I have never had to choo e an abortion. It was a fitting end to one of the most s uccessful athletic seasons in Cd M's 27-year his- tory. First, the Sea Kings' football and water polo team clinched C l F championships. Then Cd M bas ketball defied the odds and reached as far as the CIF finals before falling. Last Saturday night, it was the volleyball team's turn. Seeded Number 3 in the CIF 4A division with a season record of 16-2, the Sea Kings gave up the opening set to Mira Costa 1(lS-l6), the Ocean League's top squad with an undefeated 21-0 record going into the finals. Cd M rallied in the next three games to def cat the Mus tangs 15-12. 15-6. and 15-8 behind tough playing at net from middle blockers C hris Pliha and Jason Perkins and the defense and serving of setter Ty Price. The Sea Kings. had rtot faced Mira Costa during the regular season and as a result was forced to make some adjustments fol- lowing the first game, according to Cd M Coach Charlie Brande. "We went into the first game to see what we had to do,•• remarked Brande about his team's turnaround ... We went into the second game to beat them. We play University and Newport Harbor during the season and they're really tough, so we're real accustomed to having to adjust.". Cd M went ahead o n two occasions in the first game, 5- 3 and 7-5, before falling behind 10-7. The Sea Kings regained the lead, but failed to convert on three game-point situations. Mira Costa won the set o n Zach SmaJrs block. .. , think it was a little case of nerves and some unsureness," said Brande of his team's early play. ..Once we got this oot of the way, it helped us in the end." After figuring out how to exploit the Mustangs' offensive attack, the Sea Kings shifted their emphasis to blocking for the rest of the game. It was a move that pajd dividends for the Sea Kings. .. After we saw fiow they hit, we thought that would be the best way for us to score," said Brande. The Sea Kings recorded an impressive 34 stuff blocks over the course of the evening. The Sea Kings found them- selves down 3-0 just minutes into the second set. The Sea View League champs rallied to make the score 6-4 with a 6-1 scoring run. The score was tied at 12 following a brief Mustang lead. A Mira Costa penalty and a block by Corona's Chris Pliha put the Sea Kings ahead 14-12. The Sea Kings' Jason Perkins and Matt Herrington then blocked a Mira Costa shot for the winning point. The efforts of Cd M's front line of Perkins and Pliha began to take their toll on the Mustangs, who made seven bitting errors in the third match. "I think they_got intimidated," said Brande, "Their intimidation caused them to hit the ball harder and that made our block even more effective." The Sel Kings won the game 15-6.
