Bsckground: During a recent visitto the Memorial Garden at Camp San Mateo, Camp Pendleton, California, the home of the Fighting fifth Marine Regiment, several veterans who served in the Regiment during the Vietnam War observed the new memorial monuments installed there that commemorate 'both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. We immediately recognized the desire and appropriateness of developing a project plan with the goal of funding, designing, .installing and dedicating a new Memorial Monument there, honoring those Marines, Sailors and units who served in the regiment during the Vietnam War, especially those who were Killed in Action during that service. Goal: To commission a suitable and permanent granite memorial monument to recognize and commemorate all those Marines, Sailors and their units who fought In the Fighting Fifth Marines during the Vietnam War. low Progress: We have received approval from the 1st Marine Division to start our project planning and monument design work. The cost of this project, including the site preparation, Infrastructure, manufacture and installation of the monument, is estimated to be approximately $400,000.00. The entire project will be funded by generous private and corporate donations. The Dana Point Sth Marines Support Group, a 501 (c) (3) non- profit organization, has agreed to act as this project's "fiduciary." They have set up a secure trust fund to receive contributions and donations, and to distribute the money as it is needed; they have accepted this responsibility and have pledged their support and guldanceforthis project. `A nation reveals itself not only by the men itproduces .but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers."
