,duoed th<K&iids of pounds
of fish with hook and line,
flicked from what experts
said was a deep chasm off
the wharl. Later boats were
operated from landings be-
low the pier with several
ticket offices and ~tant
disputes between the opera-
tors. Down Balboa way and
off 19th street other craft
started sport fishing cruises
and over on the highway
Earl Tlbbett and one or two
others began the same prac-
tice.
Some six years ago Dar-
rell King, evidently fa-
tigued with the arguments,
bought ground under the
Lido bridge and began sport
fishing, while some of the
others gave him the razz.
berry. But Darrell was
smarter than some knew;
he began advertising and in
no time at all business flour-
ished. Later Joe Martin
sauntered into the set-up
and both are there today.
Darrell is just up from • a
siege with a ruptured appen-
dix in the Long Beach, Com-
munity hospital, and came
mighty near l1'0t coming
back to his business, his new
and to the presidency
newly formed Sport
group. But· like most or guys who go down to
the sea in ships, he is too
tough to shuffle off, so will
do his utmost to bring har-
mony and trade to an indus-
try that needs both:

Back of the personalities in the Wallace-Jones fl"\lcas are
two antagonistic philosophies of government.
Mr. Jones favurs government loans to business through
the Reconstruction Finan'Ce Corpora ti on only when the
money cannot be obtained through the nonnal lending chan-
nels. Mr. Wallace, on the other hand, thinks the RFC should
lend its billions freely to all lines of business in order that the
natioD may achieve what he calls "economic tiemocracy."
Aside from the fact that' the plan of the former vice-presi-
dent would plunge the federal government more than ever
into .direct competition with its, own citizens, it wou)d alSo
place American business permanently under the political dic-
tates of Washington. .
Mr. Wallace emphasizes postwar loans to small business,
as if to say that no small businessman will be able to get a
loan unless the government gives it to him. He overlooks the
fact that special preparations are being made by American
banks to accommodate every small enterpriser who !)~as any
reasooable claim whatever to credit.
It is also a fact that during this war the small manufac-
turer and businessman has received the greatest support
from the agencies of private business.
Mr. Wallace may feel that his brand of "economic democ-
racy" is a good thing, but we fear that its counterpart is po-
litical dictatorship.

Share Your Home
The continuing influx of war workers into California, tx>-
getber with the increase of Army and Navy pers0nnel as-
signed to this area, has made the already tight housing situa-
tion even more acute in many localities.
So desperate has the situation become that 71 communi-
ties around the San Francisco bay are pushing a "Share
Your Home" campru&n in an effort to induce more home
owners to rent spare rooms to servicemen and essential war
workers.,
. Sharing one's home is a contribution toward wiruting the
war just as is the buying of war bonds, donating blood, sav-
ing paper, fats and tin. Many f<UJli]ies have an extra room
that could be used immediately. In this way the home owner
helps ~e war effort and benefim by it at the same time.
Military men and war workers must be housed. The co-
operatioo of every family able to provide Ii~ space in
crowded housing areas is urgently needed to solve this prob-
lem.
