It was Interesting to at-
tend a meeting of old-tlmerS
-men who; ~thede
years. worked and to take Newport Beech out
of "just another beach town"
ance«ti)r and start it on its
way to bigger things. But
just because only presidents
ot the past attended. does
not signify that only the top
flight men did it all. Far
from it Mempry recalls
guys like Joe Schnitker, J . P.
Greeley, John McMilllll\. Dr.
Richter. Lew Wallace, Law-
rence Wilkinson and many
more, who had an energetic
hand in achievement You
can go down the pa th of
time and discover that one
reason why thls area has
gone ahee.d was clue to the
two.fisted ci tlzens who
fought for their community
and kept hammering away
despite hell and high water.

What Impressed one

Oiarley Way, clean of the..-

while Lew Wallace, Curly
Jerdan, Al Rousselle are
slowing up a bit. Mark
Johnson is. still hitting the
bell as vigorously as ever,
as are Steve Smith, Theo.
Robins and Eddie .Moore.
The rest of the "ex's" are
yaunger and should, there-
fore, continue active. Of
course Harry Welch is no
spring chicken, but those

· Paul Claire. Speaking of
old timers, there is Paul
Claire, a fixture in these dig-
gins' for more than 20 years.
, Paul spent nearly all that
time fooling around the wa-
ter and the best part of it
having to do with building
boats. He was super at the
old Sooth Coast Co. and for
a while continued on, but fi-
nally decided to quit the
game and go into bumness
for himself. Of all thmgs,
he picked out a feed store
which he is opera ting on the
Mesa and if his personality
and legion of friends means
anything he will do a thriv-
ing business.

Red Crees. Reports are
that the beach Red Cross
drive is only 45 per cent to-
ward the t op. which means
the community has a long
way to go in the next two
weeks. Workers say It is

ln remarks as illuminating as any we have seen on the
subject, Mr. Edwin M. Daugherty, California Commissioner
of Corporations, addressed a business group recently on the
subject of the people's savings. and what is apt to happen to
them in the period ahead ·
Said Mr. Daugherty: "In some quarters there is a delus-
ion that it is desirable to enrich all classes at the expense of
each other. This is plunder under the pretense of philan-
thropy, organiz.ed under the law. There are two kinds of
plunder-legal and extra-lei.tl. ..The latter, encompassing
theft and swindle,~ punishable under the Penal Code. But
legal plunder by dlScriminatory laws and bad government
loots the people just as badly!" ·
In the opinion of one industry which considers itself about
to be plundered "legally'', that form of looting is no better
than that punishable by law. In this case, a supposedly phil-
antbrOpic move is afoot to increase present retirement, pen-
sion and h06pitalization benefits of railroad employes by a
new system of life insurance annuities, royalties for falling in
the bathtub, appendicitis operations, pregnancy, maternity
and other non-work-connected illnesses. The ambitious pro-
gram would not be financed solely by those who will benefit,
say railroad spokesmen, but mainly by the roads and civilian
shippers, should the bill HR 1362, be enacted by Congress
into law. •
"If war savings flow into the channels of legitimate busi-
ness. society as a whole will reap the benefits," declares Mr.
Daugherty. "But if plunder is to be the keynote, our eco-
nomic structure will surely be imperiled."·

At a Legislative hearing on the question of medical insur-

cently presented a poser in that regard. Once medical insur-
ance is compulsory for everybody; in accordance with the
Governor's proposal now before the legislature, she de-
manded, what's to prevent extension of the compulsory prin-
ciple to include life insurance by compulsion for everybody,
fire insurance, funeral insurance, food. housing. clothing in-

Obviously, food. housing and certain other daily require-
