Opinion From the Grass Roots
When we want to find out what the people generally are
thinking about a public issue we like t,9_ ta_ke a look at the
newspaper exchanges--the press comment mainly from , the
small and medium siz.ed towns of the state. Usually it's a
pretty fair gauge, for most home town editors try not only to
print the facts, pro and con. but reflect the sentiment of their
commurlltles as well.
· Following are comments during recent days concerning
the big question of compulsory medical insurance. sponsored
by Governor Warren and the CIO, and shortly to be acted on
at Sacramento:
"Fundamentally we object to the prevailing rendency to
whittle away more and more of the wage--<!anier's paycheck
before it gets into his hands. We believe people should be
permitted some ... choice in spending their own earnings."
-PALO ALTO TIMES '
"Compulsory health insurance throws another dragnet of
bureaucratic control over another typically American enll!r-
prise which has gone farther toward protecting public health
than any government-controlled agency in any other coun-
tri."-TURLOCK JOURNAL
"Stall! medicine could, and probably would, become pollti-
cal. Patients would have to take the service ... and like il-
Any comeback would be tangled in miles of red tape." -
PASADENA INDEf'.ENDENT
"Very few' benefits are possible to anyone except the poli-
ticians under this plan."-COMPTON HERALD-AMERICAN
"Governor Warren recommends a compulsory payroll tax
. for medical service. Medical care is important. So is
food, clothing, hOllSing. Why not a deduction to provide
these necessities, too? 'The ultimate is the government col-
lecting all wages and providing all goods and services. 'The
Idea is as old as government itself-and it has never worked:"
-KINGSBURG RECORDER
Perhaps the most inll!restro readers of grass roots opin-
ions these days are out-of-town readers-the Legislators at
Sacramento. to whom the home town papers and the letters
from constituents are a helpful guide in such vital legislative
matll!rs.
" The Prospect of Peace
SUrveyirig official sources on the probability of peace in
Europe in the very near future, an Associated Press dispatch
bas reported thus: Anything can happen. A formal Gennan
surrender Is not an impossibility-but it -ls the last thing Al-
lied leaders expect.
'That Is telljng very little, since obviously there Is little to
tell. While the Gennan and Jap leaders are increasingly vol-
uble as we crash the gates of their inner citadels ,they do not
say much nor provide many facts that a newsman can hang
his hat on. '
"Even It fate has turned against us now," roars Hitler,
biding away in a mountain retreat, for there Is no safety to-
day in the German cities, "there can be no doubt these re-
verses will be overcome!" And Premier Kolso-<!ven as the
Imperial pal&ce smokes from oor bom~ his people
that "lf the Arnericans'make a blind and clesperall! effort to
invade waters near Japan, we shall crush them back into the
sea!"
We recognl2e that. of course, as big talk with little mean-
ing. Nevertheless, Admiral Nimitz tells us we still have a
90 per cent intact Jap Anny to fight on the mainland. And
in Germany fanatic Nazis are expected to go underground for
a long struggle regardless of the main German Anny's disin-
tegration.
'There Is llttle expectancy of quick-crumbling capitulation
and little over-optimism in American hearts today. 'There is,
though, a great shining hope that the ''unexpected" may hap-
pen, and that the superior strategy of our command may cut
to a minimum both the length of the conflict and the cost.
