PDICDONS. Quite a
R bit ot turmoil has arisen
over the building of a small
house almost at the entrance
to the Balboa Peninsula-
the place Is on the curve that
swings both to the ocean and
bay streets and Is as conspic-
uous as a red storm signal.
Realtors in that section de-
clare if the bars are let down
for any kind of a house, It
will wreck values and that if
a person violates the gov-
ernment's ruling of $200
without a priority, the law
should be obeyed not only by
the builder but by the local·
lty i<SUing the pennit. Of
course the building inspector
is more or less powerless to
refuse to grant a pennit, but
citizens declare some discre-
tion could be exercised in
asking the applicant to con-
form to what the govern·
ment desires in the present
war emergency.
''Plan Commissioit Can't Pass on Zoning''
Moral support should be
given the city council in try-
ing to correct such a condi-
tion and prevent restricted
areas from going backward
by csrelessness in zoning and
ordinances. As one realtor
stated, Long Beach, San
Diego and other cities have
gone commercial since the
' war started, thus leaving the
harbor district tops from a

of
For the second time in the space of one short week of war.
a great American fell, a casualty to his war job. when Jap
bullets killed Ernie Pyle on le, near Okinawa.
Franklin Roosevelt, for whcise untimely passing the civil-
ized world still wears its mourning, would have been the first
to bow his head in grief at the death of Ernie Pyle, the un-
assuming little man who followed the front lines to record in
his simple stories the doings of American sons in battle.
Ernie was a hero to the troops he lived with, shared K ra-
tions with and wrote home about. He went where the fight-
ing men went, and though he admitted the sound of the big
guns made him sick inside, he always pushed on if there were
men ahead. for those were the men he glorified in his stories.
The muddy. dirty and often bloody G.I. was the boy Ernie
' Pyle heroized The signed column printed in many papers
alongside the news of his own death drew a homely yet heart-
stirring story of the picture of the boys in the Okinawa ac-
tion. How they lived, in shallow hoxholes on a cold and
windy hill. How they dined, .on mouldy K rations, dated
1942. What they talked about between supper and blackout.
when the war would end, what the home front thinks about
it all, little whimsical jokes on themselves and each other.
Families of service men in the areas Ernie Pyle visited
on both war fronts watched his daily column earnestly for
news of their loved ones, eager to learn something of the con-
ditions under which they lived and foµght. Ernie was a link
--a strong, dependable link-between the men at the front
and home. He \viii be missed as keenly here as in the war
camps where he was loved greatly for his kindliness and sim-
plicity and respected deeply for his honest understanding of
the file of a fighting man.
Military Suicide .
,I
It is obvious in the Pacific that the Japanese regard hu-
man life as far more expendable than bullets and implements
of war. Jap officers throw the lives of their men away by
the thousands, uselessly, when cornered.
Entire Nation . Mourns Death
I '' Of Franklin D. Roosevelt;
Vast Tasks Face Trum
FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT
JANUARY SI, 1812--APRIL 1%. JK5.
AS THE guns of America's fighting forces sounded ever
closer the doom of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan,
Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in Warm Springs, Georgia,
where he had been resting for 10 days.
Death resulted from a cerebral he rnorrhage at 4: 35 p. m .
on April 12 . Mr. Roosevelt was 63 . He had been Preside:1t
for 12 years, one month and nine days. The \Vhite House was
announced as the site of the funeral, with interment at the
family estate at Hyde Park. N. Y.
Less than four months had elapsed since he had t ak eri hi s
hi storic oath of office for a fourth term. Only a few weeks
before he had returned from the Yalta conferenc~ \vher~ 1n
company with Marshal Stalin of Russia and Prime Minister
Churchill of Great Britain he had labor ed to build an endur·
ing peace .
Fate denied F ranklin R oosevelt the chance to enjoy the
fruits of victory over the Axis. Yet history seemed destined
to enshrine him as one of the immortal American Presidents'.'
And every citizen who mourned the untimely passing of the
Commander-in-Chief felt that he was a casualty o! the war
just as surely as every G. I., Marine and Sailor who had

According to figures announced in Washington, at least
865,000 Japanese have died for Hirohito since Pearl Harbor,
the total falling only ·a little short of that for all American
casualties including killed, wounded, prisoners and missing in
all theatres of action. The Japanese figures do not include
the hundreds of thousands slain on the China mainland.
American fighting men thoroughly approve the Japanese
theory that the lives of Nip soldiers are cheaper than war
machinery, and they are helping to sustain the philosophy by
obliging those who insist on dying for the Emperor. The
more of the enemy that hurl themselves to useless death in
Banzai charges and Kamikaze power dives, the• sooner the
war will end. Such military suicide can lead only to final dis-
aster and defeat for the enemy.
