It would be a shame to do
anything that might prove
detrimental to the future of
Costa Mesa. That section is
destined to become one of
the finest residential and

Southland. Its proximity to

beach does not possess. and
its adaptability from a soil

not only because of its sea

(By AL JOYCE) Possibility that Costa Me511 might be the site for a state

an extent that an appeal has been made to legislators from Attorneys for the prosecution and defense of Rev. Wesley
G. Edwards, now on trial in San~ Ana Superior Court. for al-

complete to the jury by 10 o'clock tomorrow mommg. While
the two able court strategists battled for the favor of the 10

Berlin Burial
Active
Member
of
IJerlin . dying as it lived, in a final. furious outburst of vio-
lence. has been buried in its own rubble.
The citadel of might, where ruthless men planned their
sordid campaign of world subjugation. has become a symbol
of total war's fearful retribution.
Fragmentary reports of the battle for Berlin make it clear
that the once-arrogant Nazi capital has been literally blasted
from the face of the earth-and that little remains in vast
areas of the city but tangled wreckage and debris.
This is Hitler's final monument-a gravestone of broken
masonry. piled on the broken bodies of his people; a once
great capital reduced to ashes; a city condemned to death by
its own fanatical leaders seemingly detennined on their own
self-destruction when they could no longer satiate their lust
for destruction on °the helpless of other nations.
Russian tanks and artillery, and Allied bombs and rock-
ets. wrought the actual destruction. But if ever a city com-
mitted suicide, and then pulled its buildings down to cover its
passing, that city was Berlin, capital of the Nazi hierarchy.
Kidding the Taxpayers
Political mathematics is a science not taught in the
schools. but quickl y learned in the halls Of congress. The ob-
jective of the politico-mathematician is to convince the tax-
payers, by juggled figures and glib patter. that government-
run operations always ~Id huge profits-the idea being that
the taxpayers ";11 then willingly dig into their pockets to fin-
ance more of them.
Currently, COfli:ressman Rankin of Mississippi, one of the
veteran exponents of this political system of double entry I
bookkeeping, has become so concerned over our benighted
condition in California that he has issued a special press re-
lease from Washington warning that our electric costs are
too high-and implying that what we need here is a big scale
government-operated ]X>wer project. patterned afte~ TV A.
Mr. Rankin. who apparently has no more problems to con-
quer back in Mississippi. reports that the people of California
used 16,195,525,000 kilowatt hours of electricity last year.
for which they paid $246,276,631. Under TV A. claims Mr.
Rankin, the cost would have been only $192,361,223. Hence
we were over-charged $53,915,408!
Having thus exposed California as a horrible example of
a state in dire need of an umpty-ump billion dollar govern-
ment-owned electric system, Mr. Rankin then skipped on to
other affairs and gave us no further details. He forgot to
tell us, for example, that publicly-Owned power projects don't
pay taxes like private power companies-and that what Cali-
fornia citizens might save in rates, they wOuld pay, with com-
pound interest. in increased taxes. '
Even if we accept Congressman's Rankin's figures at face
value, and assume that the state would save $53,000,000 an-
nually in electric bills by doing in the private power com-
panies and going all-out for public ownership, the loss in
taxes would far outstrip the saving in rates. One of Califor-
nia's companies alone, paid $44,268,000 in taxes last year, or
almost as much as the total saving which Mr. Rankin believes
would be achieved if all the state's ]X>wer business was han-
dled by TVA.
But then, taxes never figure in political mathematics.
That, it appears, is the secret of successfully kidding the tax-
payers.
Di sabled War Workers Make Good
A "€Vere jog to the self esteem of the big and burly among
us is contained in the official report that physically handicap-
ped workers in the war plants are turning out a better job
than the able bodied.
In a comparative study of 2853 crippl~ workers and 5523
physically nonnal workers, the war and navy departments
found the normal eniployes lagging far behind in production
and in quality of work.
The news will surprise strong and healthy producers who
thought they were turning in a pretty fair performance up to
now, but some reasGDS tor the differential seem evident The
handicapped person wnally takes his job more Sl!riously, just

The bulk: or the batUe ot Okinawa

Ume the marine1 had it easy, and

But my selt-a11ignment on the
Okinawa blitz wa1 to write about
the m1rlne1 and that's what I COD·

and have been Uvi.n1 with them
amldst tleaa, mosquitoes .. 1oat1 and
a few Japs, hidin1 under bushes. So.
natura.lly I wa.nt to tell you about
them.
Marine corps blitzes out here have
all been 10 bitter and the marines
have performed 10 maintftcently
that I had conjured up a mental pie·
ture or a marine that bore a close
resemblance to a man from Mara.
l was almNt afraid of them myself.
Find• Marinu

I clld ftnd the marine• confident.
but neither cQcky nor amart.-aleck.y,

human Americans.
They are proud to be marines.
They wouldn't be in any other
branch al the service. Yet they are
not a rrorant about il And I round
they bave a healthy respect for the
in fall try.
.Orie day we were sitting on a hill·
side talking about tbe infantry. One
marine 11poke ot a certain army di-
vision-a d.ivtsioo they bad fought
beside-and was singing its praUe1.
"lt'a a1 rood a1 any marine di·

"What wa1 that you aald ?" a Us·

The marine repeated it and em-

"Old you hear what be 1aid? 'Ibis

must be cruy. Haw. h•w, haw!"
And yet other boy1 chimed in, ar·
go.Ina: very toberly, and sided with
the one wbo bad praised the army
d.ivisioa.
• • •
Before I came into the field, iev-
eral marine officers asked me to
try to sense just what the marine
splrlt la, just what causes it.. and
keeps It alive.
In peaceUme when the marlne
corps waa a amall outfit, with its
campaign.a blghllrhted. and every.

But since tbe war the marine
corps ha1 p-own into bWldreda of
thousands ot men. It bas been di-
luted, 10 to speak. Today it ta an
outfit of ordinary people-some big,
some little. some even dra!teea. It
baa changed. in t~ct. until marines
look exactly Uke a company of sol·
diers ln Europe.
Yet that marine corps spirit still
renuin.s. I never did find out what
perpetuates It. They're not necea-
saril,y better trained. They're no
better equ.ipped and otten not aa
weU supplied as other troops. But
a marine still considers him11elf a
