Three and a half years t>f bloody strife in which American boys laid down their Jives. have come to an end in Europe. It was 5 years and 8 months ago that Germany entered P<>- land and its ~ through to Russia and Into the low- lands into France. has been one of horror, privation, needless slaughter and star- vation. The Nazi regime can rightly be called one of sav- age butchery; the unthink- able and unbelievable atr<>- cities committed in the pri- son camps will ever remain a blot on the "Msste Race, -(?)" It Is inconceivable how any nation of civilized men ,. could sanctioo such das- tardly acts as they visited on captured civilians, no matter what creed or religion-how they could torture and cre- mate the thousands of people Is beyond human compre- hension. Americans at home cannot v!suali7.e the wholesale mas- sacres and while many will all too speedily forget, those families who have been pen- all2ed by lost loved ones will always remember the useless and pitiless crimes of the Hun barbarians. One may say that Hitler's was a dis- eased mind, but that does not excuse Himmler or the henchmen who carried out orders not only on the Nazi command but for the pure joy of killing. Even the young soldiers took a sadist- ic delight in murder and ~y retaliatory me th o d s Wi!1 seem futile and helpless. as 1t does not bring back the dead. Yet, none of the guilty must escape punishment; to para- phrase Lincoln's memorable words: • - -that these dead sball not have died in vain." • • • Coming Home. The news that 1,400,000 soldiers are returning from Europe and that many of them ~ ~ discharged from service, IS happy news to the mothers. fathers, wives and sweet- 1-rts at home. Some of t11e<;e boys will COO! to the harbor district and their ad- mission back into the ranks of civil life will be fraught with the usual headaches that accompany such a change. Active Member of It is no secret that official Washington is worried that the formal announcement of V-E Day. will be taken by many citizens as a signal for spending their savings. This spending may not come all at once, but as producticr of consumer goods-radios, electric irons. washing machines and the like-is resumed. the urge to "get a new one" may create a terrific demand which manufacturers will be able t o satisfy only to a small extent. Under such conditions. prices will become inflationary in spite of the OPA. The only way such a situation with its disrupting effects on the nation's economy can be converted is through the co- operation of all citizens. Everyone who has built up a bank savings account or has set aside a reserve in War Bonds should keep such"'tuncls intact and should continue to add to them. Actually. the approach of V-E day and the employ· ment uncertainties which lie beyond it should spur a greater effort toward economy. The· establishment of a family budget and the use of a checking account as a means of keeping tab on expenditures can help considerably toward wise spending and wise saving. V-E Day will not be "dangerous" unless we make it so. Walkie-Talkie s for All How would you like a radio station of your own' Well. after the war maybe you and everyone else will have one-- but it \\ill be of the walkie-talkie variety. I As a matter of fact the federal communications commis· sjon has already assigned frequencies from 4GO to 470 me:-;rr- cycles for ci ,·ilian use. I This device \\'ill not only sen:e fr,r personal com.munica- tions where telephones are not available, but it is also ex-I pected to have an important place in the business field. Doctors out making calls will be quickly reached by their offices. Cattlemen. Canners and oothet persons in outlying 1 areas will find them most useful Probably one of their' greatest uses will be in the transportation field. A century ago the telegraph was invented. Later came the telephone, then wireless, then' radio, and now the walkie- talkle. What next? The Mail-Box Thief The man who steals service-men's allotment or allowance checks is no Robin Hood. He steals from those who fight for bis very own life at the risk of his own. You wouldn't SU!>- pose there would be many people of such low character. But the rising loss of army and navy checks to families of soldiers and sailors has impelled the U. S. Secret Service to launch a special campaign to warn servicemen's families of the organ- ized thievery. The mail-box robbers spot houses displaying service flags I in their windows, watch for the mail deliveries and collect any letters arriving from the treasury department almost as soon as the postman leaves them. Households receiving ?'eeks_ are urged to watch_ for the post's arrival and. to make I 1t a pomt to get to the mail-box first. Incidentally. a strong lock will discourage thievery, the secret service points out. A measure of responsibility rests with all firms where treasury checks are cashed, and stores are requested Y' know all endorsers. · If the aggregate amount of servicemen's pay stolen regu. larly from private boxes is of sufficient magnitude to move the secret sef\~ce to action, a real pinch must be felt by the indi\idual families suffering the losses. Thefts of this nature are represensible, however. beyond any amounts in\1olved. The crime is heinous against men of- fering their lives on our country's battlefields. and every citi- zen should do what he can to help apprehend the criminals. --AMEQICAN HEROES WOODY COWAN .~--- What an the view• ot our new -1dent on labor-capttal-lndu.try- atrtke>reconveralon !
